Be still my heart! No, it definitely cannot because of this brilliant story! Everything I long for in a historical viking romance is here! When I began on the first page, I was captivated and could not put it down! Prepare to be transported back to Northumbria 872 where the Danes have invaded the Saxon's land and taken almost all they own.Saxon maiden Elswyth and her sister Ellan are staying in Alvey at the request of Lady Gwendolyn, who married Dane Jarl, Vidar. Elswyth and her family despise the Danes and she is wary when she meets Viking warrior Rolfe. He is the leader of the Danes under Vidar. Vidar and his wife would like their warriors to take Saxon brides to help with the discord and mistrust and unite the two sides. When Elswyth meets Rolfe (that scene still stays in my mind) there is almost an instant attraction. Of course it is difficult for her because she is wary to trust the enemy. Rolfe is so strong and a great leader of men, but he is also gentle, kind and sigh worthy! Yes, I admit I fell in love with this amazing, strong warrior. As these two are together, their emotions are intense and literally come off the page. Can they be together with Elswyth having such strong feelings against the Danes? This is the first story I have read by Harper St George and I have instantly become one of her greatest fans! Her wonderful prose is masterful as she creates a time out of history with her intimate knowledge of the Vikings. I could literally see the scenes unfold in my mind with her descriptive writing and almost three dimensional characters.I just wish I could time travel back in her story and meet Rolfe. But I do not think my heart could take it and I would just swoon at his feet! This goes on my list of best books I have read this year and I cannot wait to read the next great tale in this series!!! I highly recommend!!
well written.
The Danes have arrived in Alvey. Elswyth thought with consternation that they were rather handsome for barbarians, particularly the one in charge, Rolfe. But she must never forget that they are the enemy, and that they've come to take the Saxons' lands, coin, and the women. Elswyth's sister Ellan is more enthusiastic, but what would their father Godric think if they consorted with the Danes whom he despises. Logically, Elswyth knows the Danes are not all bad; their Lady Gwendolyn married one, Vidar, and they're happy. Rolfe is a kind man, but as much as she is tempted, Elswyth could never love her people's conquerors. But what if becoming his wife meant the difference between war and peace?I could make this a very short review: if you enjoy Viking romances, get your hands on MARRYING HER VIKING ENEMY as fast as you can, it is absolutely fabulous! I am ecstatic at what Harper St. George did with the story, and I couldn't find fault with it even if I tried. The year is 872, and I felt transported to another time for the duration of the novel. Ms. Harper's research is most impressive, and she achieves a perfect balance between warring nations, the romance, adding just enough historical details to create a medieval atmosphere that always rings true. There is considerable wariness on both sides when Rolfe and Elswyth first meet. Rolfe suspects Elswyth of not being entirely honest, but he is also holding something back. And the problems this caused was superbly handled by the author. I am not usually overly fond of romances whose foundations rely heavily on territorial conflicts, but I'm happy to say that the politics do not overwhelm the narrative, quite the opposite; it gives the story depth.I loved the interactions between the characters; the sisterly banter between Elswyth and Ellan; the easy camaraderie between Rolfe and his warrior friend Aesir; and the friendship between Elswyth and Gwendolyn, where we sense the difference in their statuses. I appreciated that Rolfe is confident without being arrogant; he had every right to be; he is truly a magnificent hero. Elswyth is a farm girl who had to grow up quickly, but she can down a man with her bow and arrows. I loved how different Elswyth and Ellan are, and I appreciated how subtly the author conveys their uniqueness. How perfectly lovely to see a cover that depicts a pivotal scene so admirably! The chemistry between Rolfe and Elswyth is palpable, and the progression from enemy to lover is gradual and entirely convincing. It's a surprisingly very tender romance, and a captivatinng story, with all the political machinations and betrayals swirling around them. The pacing is impeccable, the story flows seamlessly, and the intimate scenes are sublime. MARRYING HER VIKING ENEMY is wonderfully easy to read, and I just didn't want the book to end. A brilliant, brilliant book!I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Marrying Her Viking EnemyTo Wed a Viking book 1by Harper St. GeorgeWOW! As a first time reader of Harper St. George I can’t express how much I utterly enjoyed this book! Seriously why haven’t I read her book’s before?!Elswyth and her younger sister Ellan have been sent to Alvey to spent the summer with Lady Gwendolyn with helping around the household. After she married the Dane Jarl Vidar the couple has been doing their best to make certain the Saxons and Danes in Northumbria lived peacefully together. For Elswyth this was the perfect opportunity to do as her father bid her....to spy on the Danes!Upon his return home Rolfe is weary and tired but he knows for certain the Saxons are up to something. He needs to see his friend Jarl Vidar and discuss what’s been going on between the Scots and the Saxons. But it wasn’t Vidar who caught his attention, it was the beauty atop the castle wall. Much to his surprise Vidar and Gwendolyn have chosen Elswyth as a prospective bride for Rolfe, the idea wasn’t unappealing but he was certain that Elswyth was hiding something. Certain she’s a spy, he decides that courting her he’ll be able to expose her. What a fantastic read! Intriguing and full of surprises witty banter and smouldering sexy times. Harper St. George has a gift in story-telling she grabs the reader and takes them on a magical ride through time! The secondary characters were well written they added to the story, can’t wait to read Aevirs story! This definitely goes on my keeper shelf!I received a complimentary copy from the author. This is my honest unbiased opinion.
