Noodleheads See the Future, by Mitch Weiss

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3—The creator of Fly Guy follows up Noodlehead Nightmares with another hilarious and engaging anthropomorphic book full of wacky slapstick. Brothers Mac and Mac are the titular heroes, and, yes, they are literally pieces of pasta. They are also, well, noodleheads: the literal-minded brothers are incapable of understanding metaphor or grasping simple concepts. The humor is similar to that in the "Amelia Bedelia" series, and youngsters will laugh knowingly at the noodleheads' ridiculous antics as they bumble their way through to a happy conclusion. The author's note explains the worldwide tradition of tales of fools, their use in helping children learn logical thinking, and the specific stories that inspired the noodleheads' adventures. The cartoonish artwork captures the over-the-top feeling of the narrative perfectly. Children will doubtless ask for more titles starring the hapless brothers. VERDICT A funny and lighthearted addition to early graphic novel and beginning reader collections; fans of all things goofy will devour the noodleheads.—Elizabeth Nicolai, Anchorage Public Library, AK

* (Starred Review)Two thickheaded macaroni noodles prove the old adage: a fool and his firewood are soon parted. Fools have been called "noodleheads" for centuries, but until recently few have represented the term quite so literally. Mac and Mac aren't the brightest pieces of pasta in the world, but their hearts are in the right place. Here, the two decide to help their mama out by gathering firewood in hopes that she'll bake them a cake. As they are attempting to cut the very branch they're sitting on, a passing meatball points out that they are mere minutes away from bruised bottoms. When his words come to pass, our heroes decide the meatball is clairvoyant and demand to know their future. Drawing on and smoothly weaving together a variety of folk tales, the brief graphic novel describes how its obtuse protagonists single-mindedly seek cake, even as they anticipate death, purchase "firewood seeds" (aka acorns), and accidentally dig their mother a garden. Emergent readers will appreciate the simple text, short chapters, and comics-inspired paneled illustrations. Adults will appreciate the authors' note, which goes into some detail about each chapter's folk origins. Two delightfully dense heroes bring folk tales into the 21st century, and young readers are all the richer for it. (Graphic early reader. 5-9)  Kirkus Reviews* (Starred Review)K-Gr 3 "The creator of Fly Guy follows up Noodlehead Nightmares with another hilarious and engaging anthropomorphic book full of wacky slapstick. Inspired by tales of fools told all over the world, they create the outrageous adventures of the two brothers, Mac and Mac. In comic book style with cartoon characters, the literal-minded brothers go from one rollicking venture to another. Uncle Ziti asks the boys for a hand in building a wall, but the boys cannot figure out how to take their hand off and give their uncle their hand. A frustrated Uncle Ziti tells the boys to "listen up," only to have them turn their ears to the sky as they listen to the birds. Through simple word play that is easily recognized, the two brothers find themselves in one hilarious situation after another that are sure to make the reader laugh out loud. As with Amelia Bedelia stories, children will knowingly get the connections and snicker in delight. Young readers will be asking for more of these two wacky brothers." We got those book because it was on the sunshine state list.. cool idea with the comic format but it talks about dying and death.. not quite ready to discuss that with my child.

I bought this book because my oldest son is reading the Sunshine State Junior books. He wasn’t excited about this one, but he ended up loving it. He read it a few weeks ago and still reads it to his little brother daily.

So fun! My 6 yr old nephew loves this and has read over and over :-)

Funny book my son loved it.

My son loves these and I wish there were more in the series.

I bought this for my daughter and we both enjoyed it:-)

This book is pun-tastic (and punny too)! The Noodleheads are two lovable, goofy characters you can't help but root for (and roll your eyes at, but don't we all roll our eyes at our best friends?). The illustrations match perfectly -- so bright and fun. My baby can't read yet, but she already loves looking at the illustrations and listening to my voices as I read about this goofy duo. More Noodleheads, please!

My first almost second graders LOVED this book. I have never seen them laugh so hard at a book before and it brought so much joy to my heart! I can't wait for more!

#2,856,103 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book is the definitive guide to GWT. I would say you need to have more then a beginner's knowledge of Java (which the authors recommends also) and have some web development experience with the HTTP forms just to appreciate what the author is trying to show you. I can't believe I am saying this because the examples in the books are absolutely top notch, but it would be nice to have more sample little code snippets earlier in the book. There is a ton to digest before you get to Chapter 6 where all the great example code starts. But if you do what I did, and try to put into action at least part of what you have learned from each chapter in your own sample programs you will be better prepared for the later chapters. Otherwise, you get to chapter 6 and you are not sure what hit you. That really is my only complaint, a few easy sample apps after each chapter before you get into the big ones in the middle of the book would be nice. But after you finish this book you will definitely be ready to tackle some major projects and you will at least have some pretty good hands on knowledge of the different methods that you can use in GWT develop rich internet applications.

I was thoroughly impressed with this book. Not only does it provide a great introduction to GWT, it provides the right background information on AJAX, patterns of AJAX usage, and other tools to use alongside GWT. I was just expecting another dry reference book for yet another framework. The examples were well thought out and interesting - not just more Hello World apps.I think you may need a good background in both Java and JavaScript for this to be easily consumed, but for me it hit the spot.

As a total newbie with regards to GWT, this book covers all of the bases. As I'm new to web development in general, I had to look outside this book to answer questions about CSS and other technologies, but to be fair, it provides good coverage of GWT which is what it aims to do. It's also clear about what it doesn't cover completely, but even in those cases, it give enough information to make the examples clear.

This book is a very good resource for a GWT developer. It covers the basics well and goes on to develop usable real world examples. I liked the fact that it didn't regurgitate the Javadocs for the GWT classes, but includes a good discussion on the classes and widgets available as well as providing a good reference for CSS. Coming from a Java background this book really helped me tie it all together.

When I first checked out Google Web Toolkit, I was hooked. Finally, being able to write AJAX-based applications without being mired in cobbled-on Javascript code. The docs on [...] are fairly good, but with few examples. This book has a good mix of theory and background of GWT, along with many examples. I'm learning a great deal from it, and it has become invaluable to picking up GWT.

What makes this book great is that it sets the tone for beginners and makes it easy to step to the next levels. Advanced GWT and Ajax programmers (and designers) can jump right to the examples and learn to maximize the benefits of GWT. Highly recommended for professionals of all levels.

If you feel uncomfortable to read through the Google site about GWT, get this book. If you want some tiny tips with GWT, get this book. If you want to appreciate GWT in one day, get this book.Yet, be careful that this book doesn't catch up with time, it's talking about very old GWT.

This is one of the better books I have read to learn about a new IT technology. This would still be true, even if the other books did not set the bar so low. This is written well, easy to follow, well planned. It appears to be a book by someone who has a very thorough understanding of not just GWT, but related technologies as well.
