In The King, we are revisiting Wrath and Beth as they bring in the next generation. At least, that's what Beth would like to do. Wrath is too stressed out over his job of ruling his people, and doesn't want that for his child. Plus he's even more terrified that the pregnancy or birth will kill Beth. Meanwhile, Xcor is still looking to dethrone him and take his place as king, and a whole bunch of other unrelated stuff is also happening. I'm pretty much in the middle in regards to my feelings about this installment, since some interesting stuff does happen, but it's buried underneath a whole bunch of other stuff that I simply don't care about.I'll start with what was suppose to be the focus of The King: Wrath and Beth. As the first couple of the series, they'll always hold a special place in my heart. But I don't think they got nearly enough page time, and most of what they do have is them arguing about babies. I wasn't as annoyed as I thought I was going to be, which was good, but I still wanted to see them doing something else. My favorite scene from the book, luckily, was of them, but not because of them. Lassiter continues to steal the show every time he appears! I like Wrath and Beth, but I don't think this re-visitation did them justice. They have some serious fears to work through, but it was all sped through, and wrapped up neatly in the last couple of chapters. The King also parallels the current royal couple with the previous couple. I actually really liked the chapters about Wrath's father and his mother. It goes from the moment they met, through their marriage, and to their deaths. While I don't think these parts added anything other than even more pages, they did make me want a spin off series that focuses on the Old Country. I just really love how the historical bits are written and the way they talk and found myself more invested in the past than in the present.Of course, as with the previous several books, The King has a million other sideplots going on. Some of which only get maybe two or three short chapters, never to be seen again. One of those being John Matthew. I adore him, and I want to know what's wrong with him! However, nothing is revealed on that front. Then there's a couple of chapters from Saxton and newcomer, Abalone. Again, only a couple of pages, but at least their stories were directly related to the overarching war and dethroning plot. There's also three more romances going on in The King! Three! Xcor and Layla continue to be the odd pair, that I just cannot see together, but am also intrigued by. Unfortunately, Xcor's plan to become king was resolved way too easily and felt forced in order to give Wrath a happy ending. Assail and Sola are back, and I still don't care. At all. What is their purpose?! Assail snorts a ton of cocaine and pines after her, and that's it. Boring. Finally, there's Trez and Selena. I enjoyed learning more about the shadows, especially since their book is next, but couldn't it have waited?I liked The King, as I've liked all of the books in the series, but it was unnecessarily bloated. Some of the plots are dragged out, only to have super simple solutions at the end. While others aren't resolved, and aren't developed enough for me to get interested in. It would have been much more enjoyable with Wrath and Beth's troubles were given the attention that they deserved, especially since it was clear crap was about to hit the fan when it came to vampire politics. It also seems to me like some things are winding down, like the series is coming to a close, and yet the author keeps introducing new characters who will need their stories played out also. Hopefully it doesn't go on too much longer and can go out on a good note.

Why are we revisiting Beth and Wrath? That is all that I could thing about before even picking this book up much less while reading it. There is a reason for it and I honestly believe it could have been one of those Ward side stories in a future/different book. The King did not have a main focal couple. It did however have a story line that tried to stay focused on the king.Readers basically get four novellas created to flow as one book with the King. We get Wrath Sr and Anha, Wrath Jr and Beth, Trez and Selena, and my favorite of the book Sola and Assail. Sola's grandmother was the bump that brought this books rating to three stars. And I was left wanting more Assail and Sola, again.I'm going to go back to my frustration on why the revisit of a past couple. It didn't really work for me but there were some things that happened within these pages that I think will make this world as a whole move in a new direction. I'm curious about the changes there and how it will affect Wrath's rule.Sadly the side story of Wrath Sr and Anha felt like filler. It was there. It added pages. Their tale didn't add substance to the book.Trez and Selena's pages really could have waited for their book. Due to all the reviews already out there I know what will happen with that couple's happily ever after. I still plan on reading their book. I just plan on doing a little genre jumping before then. I'm not looking forward to that book in the lease but I'm sure the secondary, tertiary, and however many other side stories Ward thows in will be interesting enough to keep the pages moving.

I've been with her series since the beginning, followed the BDB for what feels like forever now. What I've loved so much about the first several book has been rapidly declining since. The thing with JR's writing is you just never know if your going to get a bad book anymore. Phury's book was so so. While John M and Xhex was awesome. Rhev's was so so, but Payne's and Thor's book was such a disaster, that it really was a turning point for me and I found these two books a killer of a story I loved so much.Payne was so poorly written and what should have been really her book, really ended up being a second Vishous book. And Thor? He spent 200 years with Wellsie, was elated to become a father and not even two years later everyone just expects him to "get over it and move on?" Why was everyone else's mate allowed to return and she wasn't? No...we just got to see that she was rotting away in the "in between". And he ends up with No'One with no chemistry, no bonding scent, no "mine". Quinn and Blay's book was OK as well, but nothing to really dwell in any emotion one way or another...it wasn't a sit on the edge of your seat book like Zadist's book was.Now for The King. I've read others that stated they hated the cover, I am one of them. He is no Wrath...as for the story, again it was OK, certainly much better than what we've been getting and the reference to Miley Cyrus really made me roll my eyes. I get why JR is trying to introduce other characters into the story line, but I agree with most readers that it was just too many new characters and that's why were aren't getting any of the Lessers, the Omega, the Scribe or even the brothers or their Shellans. It was such so much that I was forced to re-read the last book because I just couldn't keep all the characters straight on who they were. I think at this point JR should wrap this story to a close on the next book. She should finish Trez and iAm's story, Assail and Sola's and Layla and Xcor and leave it be. Then follow up on one final book to include all the original brothers and their shellans as a future peek into their lives and call it a day. I did very much enjoy Wrath and Beth being back in the spotlight though.I miss Hollywood's beast, I miss Butch and Vishous relationship, I miss John Matthew who we came to love since he was pre-trans. I miss Zadists bad ass attitude and I miss the fact that Nalla grows and we barely get a glimpse of her. And although the Scribe was embedded so much in the first several books, she's not even been given a thought in the last several. And frankly, I'm sick of reading about the drug dealing....I am with other readers that didn't give 5 stars...this no longer feels like a BDB series as they aren't no longer involved in the story line but as rarely seen backdrops. What is the BDB without the Brothers????

Hardscaping: How to Use Structures, Pathways, Patios & Ornaments in Your Garden, by Keith Davitt

From Booklist

Gardens consisting solely of flowering and foliage plants may be lovely, but they may also lack a sense of unification or completion. One way of introducing structure, interest, balance, and focus to a botanically dense landscape is through the application of hardscape elements. Whether it's a simple concrete birdbath emerging from a groundcover bed or an elaborate masonry walkway meandering through a perennial border, such structural ornamentation can be incorporated into gardens of any style and size. Giving straightforward advice and instruction, Davitt guides gardeners through the function and purpose of paths, walls, fountains, arbors, and other garden structures; helpfully suggests companion plantings; and provides dramatic before-and-after color photographs to illustrate the power of hardscape to transform and improve garden settings. This book was very helpful to learn about hardscaping. I knew what to look for when designing a new paver patio.

I absolutely adore this book. The photos are glorious, and there are plenty of them. It is especially pleasing to see the "before" and "after" pictures, and to realize that even my own neglected yard could look good. The idea of separating an outdoor space into separate "rooms" is a revelation. Even with a fairly small backyard, we can express three or four distinct themes. This is a well-written, thoughtful, fun, and beautiful book; it refreshes my spirit and engenders creativity.

Gave it to our nephew. He uses it for improved ideas and methods and has shown improvment in the projects he completes

This book is loaded with beautiful photos of garden pathways, patios and structures. Good use of before, after and during construction pictures. Great design lessons. I'll be referring to this design book often.

Well, it isn't really the easy way, but with excellent photos of gardens with hardscaping and without hardscaping, it is easy to see how important the addition of none plant items are to make a more beautiful space. Practical information is given as well.

Beautiful and inspirational. Caution: with a few exceptions, these magnificent gardens are attractive principally because of the plants, not the hardscape. This fact does not diminish the inspirational value of the book. Just be aware of what aspect of the photo is inspiring you.

Excellent book! This really has helped me understand the importance of different kinds of hardscapes in the garden and where to place them.
