I bought this for a Homeschool soccer and PE class I lead. It has a good variety of games. Most games are targeted for the 6-14 age range, some are for the older end (think basketball) I loved that the games were built for 2-4 people, so they are games I can play with my 2 boys without having to host an entire co-op class. Gives the fun game ideas homeschoolers often miss out on in a homeschool environment, but is flexible enough that you could teach games to multiple kids in a co-op class.

I got this book yesterday and already I have marked dozens of games that I think my family will enjoy playing together. I was on the fence about books like this but I am glad I got it. It has so many game ideas that I would never have thought of. It's been tougher to think of games for the whole family since we now have teens and toddlers. This book is very helpful. :)

Our homeschool was moving right along, but we are several years in and I still didn't have the phys ed component working. It's really hard to keep two kids interested in it when you are doing basic calesthenics and running, when you're even doing it at all. I was really hoping to find a book that had games in it that could be played with as little as three people and still be active and fun. I found this book on Amazon, crossed my fingers, and ordered. It arrived yesterday and I am so thrilled with it! Almost every page of the book has an activity. They are grouped by the sport that inspired them. And while you can't play a proper game of soccer with only three people, the activities in the book will allow me to start teaching them soccer skills and basic rules for the game, and if they are interested and want to join a team, they won't be playing catch-up. There are sections for all the major sports played in the US, as well as modified playground games (like ones based on tag and four-square). The sections set up to teach based on actual sports are laid out like simple lesson plans with the purpose of the activity, materials needed, number of players, and set-up followed by the how-to directions. The sections on playground games have several activities per page and give a good explanation on how to play. This is not a book to use to teach the effects of and reasons for exercise. If you are looking for worksheets for your kids to fill in about calorie expenditure and major muscle groups, this is not the book. Those books are out there in one form or another, but as far as I can tell, there are no books full of activities for small groups that actually teach sports skills. I'm very, very pleased with this purchase and am spreading the word about it to my fellow homeschoolers.

My 9 and 7-year-olds really enjoy the games presented in this book! We tried out "triple action kickball" last week, and they begged to play it again the next day! A relief to me, as I'm always scrambling to "fit in" P.E.! I got a good workout, too. Another great benefit is that my son in particular bonds with me (his mom/teacher/boss) if I'm playing an active game with him. I find that a good physical game like the ones presented so clearly in this book, really help the rest of the day go more smoothly. Thanks, Guy Bailey! Highly recommended!

this is a great book for homeschoolers who need to learn all these games but who may not have enough to filed a team every day. the game modifications are fun and easy and even mom has a great time!

We are having a great time with this book! The directions are clear and straight-forward and there are even diagrams. The children (ages 6-13) look at the pictures after I read the description and then go have fun.

Very complete guide to PE. There are lots of fun games to enhance the childrens learning skills. The glossary of terms at the end of each chapter help to further educate about each particular sport.

highly recommended for school, homeschool, scouts, etc to want games to play with their kids or just to have fun outside with their families

From the moment the book arrived I could tell this was different from the pushead released art collections... I have some of those signed and numbered collections too - don't get me wrong, I love 'em! But this one has a hard cover, glossy pages, color prints! Titles on the pages, or facing the page if it's a full page print. This has some rarely seen art, glorious!I couldn't be happier with the format or the prints. I only hope the binding holds up to my thumbing through it repeatedly (good thing I got two)!If I could say something critical about this it would only be - make it a bigger format but really I don't care it would just be nice to see a larger format collection of PusHead art!

I really wanted the book for a long time!Thank you so much!!

What can I say....I love Pushead artwork so much but I never had a chance to get his artwork at decent price. Most of them offered at the price that will suggest me to sell my kidney in order to get them :) ...... thus this book was a very good alternative to my passion of his work.If only this book a little more thicker and include some artworks that I've expected to be on the book (e.g. the one on the cover, pregnant lady, bull on skateboard), I would give 'full 5 star rating'. Nevertheless, this compact book is great for viewing, with lots of skeleton illustration on glossy paper, makes it good companion for travelling (to another world) . If you're into heavy metal and love book with plenty of illustration, pick up this book right away......

Pagan in Exile: Book Two of the Pagan Chronicles, by Catherine Jinks

About the Author

Catherine Jinks is a medieval scholar and author of young adult books - a background that is evident in this second of four stories about Pagan Kidrouk. Catherine Jinks’s books have garnered numerous awards, including the prestigious Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year. Pagan grew out of a university course Catherine Jinks took about the Crusades and out of her fascination with the real Order of the Templar. She was also heavily influenced by British comedies like MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL. She did not expect, however, that she would end up writing four books about Templar squire Pagan Kidrouk. "He was such a strong character," she explains, "that he sprang into my head fully formed and wouldn’t go away until I’d worked out his entire life span."Peter de Sève, who created the striking jacket artwork for both PAGAN'S CRUSADE and PAGAN IN EXILE, is a NEW YORKER cartoonist and the designer of animated characters for ICE AGE, the 2002 Academy Award winner for Best Animated Feature Film.

What's everybody staring at? . . .Look at that fellow there, gawking away. Face like a gob of spittle, he's staring at me! Why don't you get yourself a mirror, Spitface, if you really want something to stare at.A one-armed child makes a rude gesture. Runs away as I poke out a viciously threatening tongue. No backbone, little coward."Pagan." Roland's voice is cold and stern. (Doesn't want his squire eroding the dignity of his arrival.) "Please behave yourself.""It's not my fault. What's wrong with them? They don't seem very pleased to see you.""It's been a long time, Pagan. Six years. They may not remember who I am." Six years. Imagine what it must be like, coming home after six years. A quick glance at his profile, jolting along not two arm-lengths away. . . . But there's no expression on Roland's chiseled face. His eyes aren't even misty. Not that I was expecting anything different: you'd see a pig become Pope before you'd ever see Lord Roland Roucy de Bram in tears. He twitches his reins and it's time to turn right. Another narrow little street lined with pale sandstone houses, all sporting those funny peaked roofs. . . .People clustered on doorsteps, staring. They're staring at Roland, too, of course. You have to admit he's worth a look. The golden-haired knight on his glossy black horse with his blue eyes and wide shoulders and white tunic (well, off-white really, I haven't washed it in weeks), and the distinctive red cross on his chest. You don't often see a vision of Saint George wandering past your scrap bucket on an overcast afternoon in the middle of nowhere. It's like watching a stained-glass window come to life. People push and whisper and cross themselves. A sort of hush seems to follow us down the street. This is really embarrassing.PAGAN IN EXILE by Catherine Jinks. Copyright (c) 2004 by Catherine Jinks. This is a child's book. I didn't realize that as I typed in the search box "Adult"......so I will not be reading it! Instead, I will give it to me 8 year old grandson.

What's everybody staring at?   All right, so you've never seen an Arab before. Is that any reason to stare? My hair's not green. My skin's not blue. It might be darker than yours, but dark skin is quite normal in my country. So I'm short. So what? I'm not that short. I'm tall enough to see over my own knees. Anyone would think I had a giant candle-snuffer growing out of my forehead.   Look at that fellow there, gawking away. Face like a gob of spittle, and he's staring at ME. Why don't you get yourself a mirror, Spitface, if you really want something to stare at.   A one-armed child makes a rude gesture. Runs away as I poke out a viciously threatening tongue. No backbone, the little coward.   "Pagan." Roland's voice is cold and stern. (Doesn't want his squire eroding the dignity of his arrival.) "Please behave yourself."The year is 1188 and the infidels have conquered Jeruaslem. Pagan, forced into exile, is accompanying his master, Lord Roland, to the castle of Bram, Roland's home. But the castle, cold, dark and filthy, is not Pagan's idea of how lords live and neither is Roland's family anything like the type of family Pagan imagines someone as noble and dignified as Roland should have.Pagan is soon caught up in violent clashes between both family members and the family and their neighbours. At the heart of the bloody feud stands Esclaramonde, a highly principled woman whose enigmatic character and heretical religious beliefs both disturb and attract Roland, while Pagan himself finds that he too has unpalatable truths to confront.I am absolutely bowled over by Catherine Jinks's writing style. She must have done a huge amount of research before writing the Pagan books to be able to create such a wonderful portrait of mediaeval life in so few words. The excerpt quoted above (which is the beginning of the book) is a good example of prose that literally cries to be read aloud. If you are a secondary-school teacher I urge you to try these books on your class.

Jerusalem has fallen to the soldiers of Saladin. Pagan Kidrouk and his master, Lord Roland Roucy de Bram, are in Lord Roland's homeland seeking knights for a new Crusade to free the holiest of cities from the hands of the infidel. It is hard to know what Lord Roland's squire expected in his master's home in the south of France, but it certainly was not what they find when they arrive.Lord Roland's father, brothers and their families and retainers live in such squalor and have such uncouth manners and ways that Pagan is appalled. How can his almost saintly master come from such a family? It is clearly a waste of time to think that this crowd of unbelieving savages will have any interest in freeing Jerusalem from the clutches of the infidel. Pagan is all for leaving as quickly as possible. He also begins to worry about the effect that Lord Roland's family is having on his master. They are like a disease, corrupting and evil, and Pagan wants to get his master away from their influence as soon as he can. Surely Roland cannot be continuing to hope to "civilize" his family and gain their support for his cause? The situation then becomes very complicated when a local dispute breaks out between Lord Roland's father and the nearby abbey. People are killed and Lord Roland cannot bring himself to leave until he has done his best to find a resolution to the problem. However, the stubbornness of the Abbot and of Lord Roland's father is such that the dispute only escalates.Pagan is the most honest of narrators. His voice is funny and vibrant, and it gives us a vivid picture of his world, which is often dreadfully realistic. His first hunt leaves him sick at heart and in the stomach, and there is no doubt that the living conditions in Lord Roland's childhood home disgust the boy from Jerusalem. The people who live in that home don't impress him either. They are cruel, crude, often barbaric, and have very little respect for anyone outside their family circle. Pagan has such a wonderful sense of the ironic. He sees the things in life that make it pitiful on the one hand, and yet worth living on the other. He also sees the greatness in people, and his love for his master is complete. For Lord Roland, he will risk his life again and again and overcome his greatest fears. By the end of the book it is very hard not to feel great pride for this street boy from Palestine who has such a sharp tongue, quick wit, and big heart.Catherine Jinks has once again given us a book that is difficult to put down, is often deeply disturbing, and leaves one wondering what Pagan and his master will do next. The savagery and often barbarity of the times can be difficult to read about, as well as the hypocrisy of the so-called men of God. There certainly are parallels with our own times, where men kill in the name of religion, failing to see that in so doing, they defile the very faith they profess to follow. Thought-provoking, even tear-jerking, this second book in the Pagan Chronicles series is highly recommended. --- Reviewed by Marya Jansen-Gruber, editor of Through The Looking Glass Children's Book Review ([...]

"Missouri heritage cooking meets the clean flavors of the Pacific Northwest in this improbably delicious mash-up...With generosity and a warm sense of humor, the Sappingtons invite everyone to pull up a chair at their family table—and with recipes like theirs, readers will be more than happy to dig in."—Publishers Weekly "Portland's beloved Country Cat Dinner House and Bar unveils the secrets to their fried chicken, pimento cheese and other comforting dishes in a book geared toward the home cook. Come for the ranch dressing, stay for the guide to whole-animal butchery." —EATER.com “Amid the culinary distractions of Portland—the uni ice cream, the grasshopper sushi—The Country Cat has been focused on the comforting, wholesome dishes of America’s Heartland for nearly a decade. Heartlandia will have you cooking Sappington signatures such as suet-fried chicken, crispy turkey tails, and a morel and spring vegetable hash that transport you to the covered-dish suppers and Friday lake-fish frys of Adam’s rural Missouri upbringing. It’s a wonderful—and delicious—place to be!” —Matt Lee and Ted Lee,authors of The Lee Bros. Charleston Kitchen   “Heartlandia is as inspiring as it is nostalgic . . . fresh, local ingredients and perfectly executed dishes. Adam and Jackie have opened up their hearts and souls to us with the Country Cat, and now with this book everyone’s inner Gramma can become a very slick lady!” —Aaron Franklin, owner of Franklin Barbecue and author of Franklin Barbecue: A Meat-Smoking Manifesto   “Grab this book and wrap it around you like a warm blanket!!!! Adam is the mouthwatering fried chicken and Jackie is the sweet butterscotch pudding in their meal of life! Adam’s respect of the land and its product and his intuitive, comforting cooking is what makes him one of my favorite chefs. I have had the great fortune of cooking in the kitchen with Adam and eating his delicious food and listening to his infectious laugh. I am thrilled to have this book in my kitchen so that I can crack open a page and put a smile on my face —on the cloudiest of days. This book is 3-D deliciousness: I wanted to reach through the pages and grab a crispy end of lamb or a slice of birthday cake! Dive in and start cooking and get those pages dirty!” —Amanda Freitag, chef and Food Network personality   “This book will teach you to bake the fluffiest biscuits and fry a chicken to perfection. You will learn the provenance of seasonal ingredients and may even become an expert at butchering whole hogs. But the real joy of Heartlandia is knowing that Adam and Jackie not only put their souls into cooking at The Country Cat, but now also their hearts into writing Heartlandia.” —Vitaly Paley, chef and owner of Paley’s Place, Imperial, and Portland Penny Diner, and co-author of Paley’s Place Cookbook

I was never in Portland. I have the Portlandia cookbook. I was not aware of the Portland restaurant and culinary scene. But I read the Washington Post, July 1, 2015, story on its Quirky Comfort Food scene. In it they mentioned Le Pigeon, Ataula, Bollywood Theater, Pok Pok, Ox, Langhaan, and more. So I picked up this cookbook.Heartlandia is based on Adam and Jackie Sappington’s Portland restaurant, The Country Cat Dinner House & Bar. Adam, grew up on a Midwest farm and is the Executive Chef; his spouse and business partner Jackie, who mastered her first recipe at the age of ten, is the Executive Pastry Chef.I read in reviews that they are famous for their Skillet-Fried Chicken and the Challah French Toast with Maker’s Mark Custard and Clabber Cream, as well as Bourbon Peach Crumble Pie. The chicken is based on a recipe of their granny Cris who served it to inmates at the old Maries County Jail (note... you can use beef tallow instead of the pig lard) They should be famous for the Chanterelle and Blackberry Succotash; and the Honey Paprika Potatoes (uses salata cheese and honey). The book opens (after a section on tools and techniques, with Breakfast and Buttermilk Biscuits, and Pancakes. The Challah French Toast (includes challah recipe) uses aggs (of course) but also half and half, vanilla extract, bourbon, and cinnamon. The Clabber Cream on it uses heavy cream, confectioners sugar, and sour cream. (what the heck is a “knob” of butter? hehe) For their braiding they teach that Braiding: “2nd crosses over, first divides the rest, repeat”Breakfast continues with Morel and Spring Vegetable Hash; Wedge Salad with Soft Paches Egg and Green Goddess Dressing; Chanterelle, GreenBean, and Freekah Salad with Huckleberry Vinaigrette; Sugar Snap Pea and Soft Goat Cheese Salad with Cornbread Muffins; and more. Their Ranch Dressing (Their Rule: When in doubt, serve Ranch) includes thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, celery seed, lemon pepper, egg yolks, sour cream, and more. In their “Homage to the Range,” they focus on recipes for kettles. Jill's Chili uses ground dark meat turkey, kidney and pinto beans, chicken stock and more than a half a dozen spices. (The secret to deviled eggs...? perhaps it is lime juice and ground celery seed) I skipped their meat candy recipe section (also known as beef jerky). They make their own ketchup for their onion rings and home fries. It uses juniper and allspice berries, star anise, cloves, cinnamon, fennel, cornstarch, ginger, two kinds of vinegar, and of course tomatoes and tomato paste. Adam's Chicken Fried Steak is akin to American Schnitzel. Also his famous “Woo” gravy is just an easier way to say Worcestershire Sauce gravy (but note that it uses bacon fat with coffee, chicken stock, Worcestershire sauce, and more).
