British naval historian Howarth (Nelson) provides a fact-filled paragraph to accompany each plate, and also supplies a long glossary at the end, defining such terms as "galleass" ("hybrid between an oar-powered galley and a sailing ship") and "jib-boom" ("extension to the bowsprit for mounting a flying jib"). Howarth and Wheatley's volume is the first book of reconstructed sailing-ship illustrations since the '60s, and incorporates new research on how medieval and Renaissance ships, in particular, must have looked and functioned. Clarity of tall ship construction. I actually bought this book for my brother-in-law. He's retired now, but made his living repairing historical wood boats. He was a ship's carpenter. Before going him the book for Christmas I read most it. He agrees with me that the drawings and narrative provided much info on the ship's construction and the reason(s) for it.

This is certainly a lovely book, but I don't completely agree with the other reviews. Although the renderings are beautifully detailed, the vast majority are two-dimensional profiles; I found very little of anything else. If you have a fair amount of discretionary cash, it may be worth the full price. I have books that are as good that I've paid half as much for (used for $23); but, I can't say I regret the purchase (well maybe a little). The major faults are the number of flat side views (for all the lovely detail, most of the plates are very much the same) and lack of depth in the text (for a book that lists for $120). It may delight someone as a gift. The seller was very straight-forward about the minor defect.

Was as advertised and loved the recycled packaging. Shipped promptly and the person that received this as a gift loved it as well.

If you like sailing ships or tall ships this is a coffee table book you need to get. Can spend hours just looking over the details.

My cousin, who builds model ships...and has received some acclaim, really likes this book, which I gave him.

A great resource full of terrific illustrations of ships. For me, I needed historical reference and this is one of the best.

Issue 7 is a one-shot story of Obi-Wan Kenobi's early days of living on Tatooine after the Emperor has taken control of the galaxy. He struggles with the repetitiveness of long days on the dune sea and wishes that Qui Gon had taught him how "to fade away." Upon reflection, it must have been devastating for Kenobi to see such rapid and horrific change during the prime years of his life...and then he was effectively put out to the pasture on a hot outer rim planet. This story is the highlight of this volume.Issues 8 through 12 cover three arcs that all have to do with getting Luke out of the clutches of a Hutt on the Smuggler's moon. Chewey and 3PO show up on the moon and try to find Luke through Wookie coercion tactics on criminal droids and surly bartenders. There is a terrible love triangle story with Han-Leia-Sana, which gets resolved too quickly and neatly at the end. Anyone who knows anything about love triangles knows that it almost never ends without some horrendous difficulties. This tale is just ok - 2.5 stars.

Continuing the Star Wars Vol. 1: Skywalker Strikes (Star Wars (Marvel)) story. This excellent arc continues with a elements of prequels and the original trilogy to make one awesome star wars story. As someone who loves the Prequels and grew up with them I love seeing the elements in the comic. This is even better than the last volume with the Journal of Old Man Kenobi, the mystery of Han Solo's "wife," and Luke's bold plan to infiltrate Imperial Coruscant and go to the Jedi Temple. The best way I can describe it is it's like the Clone Wars TV show set in the Galactic Civil War. It's solid writing and the character's are the same lovable ones from the movie's set along time ago in a galaxy far far away.

Jason Aaron is hands-down one of my favorite comic book writers. The characters in his Star Wars books in particular 'sound' exactly like they do on screen, which is a tough thing to pull off for such a well-loved universe. This series is extremely well put together with beautiful art and coloring. I simply couldn't be happier with the direction that Marvel is taking. The blend of 'familiar', while keeping things unique and fresh is really well done. I also love how Aaron enhances little details from the movies that I never really stopped to think about before, providing satisfying glimpses into the stories we know and love that fit beautifully into canon. This graphic novel in particular tells a really solid story regarding Luke on the Hutt moon of Nar-Shadda. The teases to the lore and history of the Jedi are well-played, showing how Luke would have been learning a few things in the time period between A New Hope and Empire. Definitely a must read!

I didn't find this story quite as interesting as Volume 1, but it was still fun. I didn't particularly like the plotline with (SPOILERS) Han Solo's 'wife' in it. I wasn't really a fan of the whole Nar Shadaa story either, but the characters are always interesting and this comic series captures the characters wonderfully, so I keep reading. I had already read Vader Down while I was reading the Darth Vader series, so my next comic is Volume 3.

As a life long Star Wars fan I devoured all the Dark Horse Comics, paperbacks & hardcovers up until about 2002. And then I stopped cold turkey as there was just such a glut and the stories themselves seemed to not be all that good (especially the Dark Horse material).I recently picked up the first 2 volumes of the new Marvel Star Wars ongoing and was pleasantly surprised at how fantastic the book is. Volume 2, is by far my favorite of the two because of Stuart Immonen, who I've really dug since his days on LSH and the Superman books. The writing is top notch and the characterization is spot on. I'm especially liking the glimpses into both Vader & Obi-Wan that the series provides....

I never read comics in general, let alone Star Wars. But I was interested in the new Disney Marvel Canon and wow this series is unreal. This Starwars story is clever, smart, interesting, unexpected, nostalgic, heart warming, exciting, and has the spirit of Lucas. This is the stories and movies that should have been made, but haven't been. Read this, read this to your kids, read this to your family who love Starwars, because it is a tremendous story, one that I don't think anyone should miss. Please do yourself a favor and read the 4 Volumes.

My son wasn’t a fan of reading; read but only when asked. Started him this Christmas with his first graphic novel, and he hasn’t stopped. Now he loves to read, not just comics either, this was a great start. He is also proud of his growing collection and keeping them in mint condition for his kids.

Much as I hated to see the license leave Dark Horse, which had done some great work over the years, they also left some bruises on Star Wars comic history. (Not that Marvel didn't do the same a few decades ago.) But these new comics from Marvel? Definitely surpassing my expectations! I haven't been disappointed yet. The artwork is strong, the stories are interesting, and the quality is consistent from issue to issue. I hope this series has a good, long run.

Continuing on the greatness from the previous volume, Showdown on the Smuggler's Moon is another success in my opinion. It takes place on Nar Shaddaa, which has been featured extensively in the previous canon, but introduces the Smuggler's Moon into the new Star Wars canon. The story is interesting, the characters are great, and once more the art is spectacular. Highly recommended.

The book is written by Kirsten Hunter who is an API evangelist who helps developers and business stakeholders understand, design, and deliver APIs. The book is intended to all members of an API design team, regardless of technical level.Irresistible APIs is not bad book per Se. However when sometime ago my friend experienced Java developer was surprised why book related to webAPI has so may pages, at that time I was thinking that he only concentrate at technical part and there the topic is not so narrow. After reading the book I see that he was right to some extent. First the author describes basics of REST API in quite nice way. Then book suddenly starts it prolonged advocacy part.The book is not so technical, there are a lot advocacy in it and good arguments why approach API First is so important. And explanation why API added as extra feature is a very bad design decision. And also there are examples from business point of view describing how good and bad decisions had influence on companies like Netflix, Twitter etc. Of course it is very valuable from business point of view and advocacy. Agreeing with all of that I was reading next pages seeking when "the meat" part eventually will start. And it passed more than half of book with that advocacy style. Of course everything towards understanding how important creating of good API is. For companies for their third party clients and so on. I can agree with everything but it is pretty verbose.Then author describes how to create good APIs and she proofs that using good user cases/stories is good approach, again agree. Then she introduces several designing API schemas tools like Open API (Swagger). In book there are several exercises which are intended to put reader hands on practical subject which is good. In case of using schema designing frameworks it lacks points where user is generating stubs and can use it.Then authors starts to pack in a stuff which seems to be only to increase volume of book. So describing methodology like DDD, waterflow, agile and so on.This is yet another book when I have impression that would be better if it had less pages, be less verbose and to the point. And I would like to have impression. Yes I spent a lot of time with book but I've learned a lot. I have grown.Here from technical point of few there is a lot to add. From advocacy yes I've learned a lot of arguments why good API is crucial.So if such arguments are very important for reader or maybe will be eye opener. Go ahead.

This book has pretty much everything that you need to know about APIs (what are they, how to use them, best practices, do and don't). I definitely enjoy examples that were provided and various strategies that the author suggested on how to make best use of them. No question that the author has tons of knowledge in this area, and this book is def all you need to construct s very solid and secure APIwhy not 5 stars? I felt that the book could have been shorter... the last two sections about DDD and types of def environments, dont belong in this book in my opinion... I mean wont hurt to know them, but if i want to learn about API, i should learn about it from this book and if I want to know more about DDD, i should get a book that covers DDD in detail. So this book should have been 140 pages max, if so.

Very disappointed in this book. I did not expect a highly technical book, per the description. But I expected more help fitting my needs/situation into an API framework. The author spends some time talking about noun/resource based APIs, but moves over to talking about other types of APIs without pointing out what considerations make other choices valid. I would like: clear differentiation between API and RESTful API (API sometimes meant the more specific RESTful API - and sometimes not), clearer legends or more uniformity to drawings (some drawings have boxes, some cylinders, some just lists - which is the API server, which are individual APIs, which are clients), and a better sample API. The sample API implementation at the demo website does not keep "pizza toppings" with a user - so "my pizza" is being created and changed by any number of people. Would have been good to demonstrate here linking to a database of available toppings, storing a pizza with a user with and without logging in (registered/guest users), etc.

Many good points on what it takes to make a well designed and developer friendly API.I loved the emphasis of API first and how important is to account for business goals & metrics and the fact that you should always think that your API should be easy to use and satisfy/good experience for any developer.You will read great examples of bad and good APIs designs from big companies such as Flickr, Twitter, Netflix and others.Also, you'll have the opportunity to explore tools like RAML and OpenAPIThis book is one of my favorites! Be aware that this book doesn't tackle specific technologies to implement APIs. This book is intended to be accessible to anyone interested on the topic of creating APIs. So if you are an individual developer or technical lead, through product and project managers, and up to executives directing engineering organizations you will find valuable content on this book and start implementing Irresistible APIs!

This book takes a very balanced approach to building API services. Author is a natural story-teller. I like her way of explaining concepts. Sections on use cases, schema models and best practices are my favorites.

A marvelous, inspirational biography covering more than than 30 individuals, some well known and others lesser known. The readers for this book include the young and adults. The biography for individuals is short, mostly slightly over 10 pages per person. But the selections are just superb, reflecting the character of Senator McCain fairly well. Highly recommended.

I bought this book after reading The Restless Wave because I liked how it was written plus all the fascinating people he knew and met. So this book, Character is Destiny is thought-provoking and stimulating; so many, many fabulous people!!The stories are short enough to give the reader a good overview of the person. It caused me to continue to research many of them to know more, to look for more books about them.I highly recommend this book. It would have been one we would have read together as a family if I had obtained it years ago.It is a great book for homeschooling families. It would be excellent to use in conjunction with other curriculum that reinforces positive character traits.

These are wonderful glimpses into a number and variety of people who, in their own ways, have contributed to the well-being of the nations. Well written and certainly appropriate to these times, it gives one hope for the world.

These true stories are thoughtfully told, and are compelling & inspiring. We are thankful for the honorable character of the now late John McCain for blessing us all with this beautiful and moving book.

I loved this book. No political pressure which I was leery about. Most of the people he chose to feature I knew. I agreed with his choices as examples of each character trait

An all American hero, statesman, legend. This is one of my most favorite books. It proves we can always be better every time. Will miss him 😞
