This is an absolutely amazing book on self-discipline and creativity. If you're an entrepreneur, an artist, a writer, scientist or just about anybody with an internal urge to CREATE something but cannot because of distractions, fears, doubts and apprehensions, then this is the book for you. This will book show and define the #1 thing that's stopping you from bringing out your creative potential. It's called Resistance and how it behaves and how it beats you.And then it stresses why we should overcome the resistance and how to overcome it successfully by detaching ourselves from the fruits, operating from a territorial perspective (i.e. Doing work for the sake of doing work).By the time I reached the small chapter on Gita and Krishna's explanation on doing work for work's sake, I literally had tears in my eyes.... Because that's the way an artist must operate, not caring for the fruits. And I can attest my success in my business & job for JUST that. I gave up all hopes, desires & doubts I had.I didn't care. I just decided to do the work, punched in my time and 3 years later, I'm at a level that's shocking for many (but something I dreamed about). However, I still have a lot of blocks where I didn't express myself and get the creative part of me and I'm fortunate to have come across this book.Anyone who is here to CREATE something - read it. It will change your life!

Here is this book in a nutshell: what do you want to do? Have discipline and do it. I just saved you ten dollars. You're welcome.

TLDR: This book is a written equivalent of Shia LeBeouf's "Just Do It" motivational speech - something that tries to be inspiring, but is cut with an undercurrent of crazy and unsupportable conjecture. It will resonate with some people and turn others off. Read on for a more detailed explanation. The books is, roughly, divided into three sections: Resistance, Combating Resistance, and Beyond Resistance. The first section was actually really good. It mostly got into what Resistance is - the counterforce to achievement - and the various ways it manifests itself. While not based on any sort of evidence or research, this section lays out an allegorical enemy worthy of an epic struggle. The second section is mostly about how a professional behaves and how this behavior can overcome Resistance. The summary of this section is: show up, do the work, don't get distracted. This was the most prescriptive section of the book, but I'd say it leaned more towards inspiration than prescription. If someone complains that this book is "just common sense", it is probably this section they are referring to.Emboldened by a couple solid sections, the author goes completely off the rails in the third. The book becomes very religious, espouses lousy pop psychology, and makes outlandish claims. If I were to sum this section up, I'd say the author puts forth the idea that the artist is a conduit for some sort of divine inspiration or work, made manifest through the benevolent intervention of angels. That might be slightly harsh summary, but not too far off the mark. He literally says "We were put here on earth to act as agents of the Infinite" and "The artist is the servant of that intention, those angels, that Muse." Okay, perhaps he's just being allegorical. Nope. When talking about the fruits of our labor, he says "That is to do the work and give it to Him. Do it as an offering to God."Putting the religious aspects of section 3 aside, the rest of it is the worst kind of shoot-from-the-hip psychology. He does a deep dive into the Ego - ignoring the conventional definition and redefines it for his own purposes. He tries to draw a distinction between a hierarchical and territorial mode of thinking - unsuccessfully. He makes outlandish claims, like ignoring the authentic self may be the cause of cancer and embracing the self might be its cure. He, literally, says that becoming your authentic self could cure cancer. He goes on to explain how the colloquialisms for inebriation - stoned, smashed, hammered - are all referring to the destruction of the Ego in order to access the Self. There's no etymological basis for his statement. There isn't even any anecdotal evidence to support this. When speaking about the relationship between a mother and her child, he says "She knows it came out of her but not from her, through her but not of her." It's an interesting thought, but biologically incorrect. Lastly, he makes claims that are openly contrary. He says "Union and mutual assistance are the imperatives of life", but a few pages later says it would be incorrect to call friends for reassurance if you were feeling anxious. To me, this section felt like a mess and it ruined the book for me.In summary, this book does not have any sort of authoritative voice on procrastination, productivity, or personal achievement. It is a snapshot of a specific artist's mental model of the creative struggle. If you are looking for some sort of cogent or practical insights, then you will be disappointed. If you would describe yourself as spiritual and, probably, believe that crystals have curative properties (no judgement), then this book will probably speak to you.

I read the foreword and first groaned a little with the god talk. I continued to read. I couldn't make it to book three. This the first time in awhile I couldn't finish a book. Judging by how much I agree with many of the other 1 star reviews, I can only expect a greater degree of suffering and discomfort as the book "goes off the rails" in book 3. I find it interesting the five star reviews that say this book is motivating. I actually found it depressing and full of negative energy. It's riddled with feelings of guilt (the Christian kind), xenophobia, intolerance, disarray and just plain ignorance. It's full of strong opinions and weak on coherence and logical reasoning. I found the author contradictory in many cases. Also, the format is terribly annoying.Summary: Book 1: stop procrastinating. Book 2: just do it. Book 3: make art for god? If there is a god, please help steer others away from this silly book.

Thought provoking book. The sections on Resistance really resonated with me. I can find a thousand things to do instead of creating my art and, at my age, if I don't take control and overcome Resistance pretty soon, my time will be up. Not being a "God" believer, the last part of the book left me cold. I suppose I could extrapolate those sections into forces of the universe, but it was a let down to have to wade through all that anyway. One message is clear: Start. Open your eyes and your heart to supporting forces (people) that will cross your path (like never noticing another Land Rover on the road until you buy one and suddenly they are everywhere), and create for the sake of creating.

From the Back Cover

Rudolph Wanderone is part rogue, part philosopher, part sinner, and – if we're not stretching the meaning of the term too far – part saint. He is the last of the old-fashioned high rollers, with a hundred-dollar bill in his handkerchief pocket and the guts to use it.Recalling the good old days, Minnesota Fats speaks fondly of his hustling escapades, and of his stickmen, men with names like Tuscaloosa Squirrely, Cornbread Red, Handsome Danny Jones, and Weanie Beanie, to name a few. He recounts the all-night shoot-outs, the highs and lows, his long marriage, his one-day stint at college at the height of his career, and the madness surrounding The Hustler, the movie based on his life.As an added dividend for pocket billiard buffs, Professor Fats describes his game and how it is played, illustrating his techniques for chalking the tip, cueing up, and hitting the ball. He also talks about the speed of the stroke, and the development of effective combinations, kiss shots, and bank shots. The Professor takes his pool seriously, and longtime players as well as beginners will benefit from his instruction and his expert analysis of the various approaches to the game.Illustrated with photos and line drawings, The Bank Shot and Other Great Robberies is a vivid portrait of a legend in his time – the incomparable Minnesota Fats – as well as a high-spirited read, and a useful handbook.

excellent book for an enjoyer of pool, and others too. Fat's gift for telling his life story in humorous detail is great! I am pleased getting this nice hardbound 1st edition of one of the greats in pool. He wasn't a tournament player, he was his own player!

A very fun book to read. Does not have as much instruction on how to make killer shots as I would have hoped, but still a great book. Just remember to keep your tongue firmly in your cheek as you read about the Fat Man's adventures.

This book is a classic. If you don't know about Minnesota Fats-you should!

I love pool. Had this one a long time ago.

A superstar player who talks the talk and walks the walk.

In the 50' and 60's when I was trying to be a hustler, I found a book, allegedly by Fat Boy, on how to do drills that would radically improve your game. I practiced with them and noticed a vast improvement in my game. The movie "The Hustler", of course, had Gleason playing Fat Boy. Few people knew that the movie character"Fast Eddy" was a blend of stories about three hustlers from the east coast, all known as "Fast Eddy". One of the three and I became friends. I asked him how he got the name "Fast Eddy". He said in Brooklyn and Queens etc he used to blow every pay check shooting only the best hustlers around. They nicknamed him "Fast Eddy" he said because he lost his money so fast. Last I saw of him was '70 when he was headed to japan for some action. If you possibly can find it, get that old book of drills I mentioned and use it. Even if not written by Fat Boy, it's worth every penny you pay for it.

The Hustler was NOT based on Wanderones life. Wanderone chose the name Minnesota Fats after the movie came out. This have been clarified by Walter Tevis, the author of the book "The Hustler" many times. The character in the hustler would appear to be based on a short story by Tevis.Wanderone was by many accounts not a world class pool player, but he was certainly a gambler, and an interesting personality.

#11,330 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I rather like this author's style when it comes to telling the tales of old time Western desperadoes and the men who wore the badge that were sworn to bring them to justice. Have to say the book did paint some pretty gruesome images as for example preserving the head of Joaquin Murrieta Carrillo in whiskey for display, blood spurting from the hole in Gratton Dalton's throat whenever the right arm of his corpse was lifted or Sanders cutting off his own brother's hand so he might escape the law. Book did spark my interest as to wanting to explore more of the lives (and deaths) of similar notorious outlaws and already ordered up one on John Wesley Hardin as a result (ASIN: B01K934I0A) or you can grab yourself The Story of Cole Younger, by Himself (ASIN: B004TPC6Y0) for free if you like. Fine book overall complete with an active table of contents and an appendix at the close including mentions of the gunfight at the O. K. Corral, Four Bad Men Who Made a Specialty of Carrying Guns and more which made it a nifty book for me overall. Leave you with the dying words of Sam Bass to mark the occasion, "I am Sam Bass; I am shot all to hell, and it's no use to deny it."

You can't beat this book for variety of coverage of numerous outlaws, gunfighters, and law men as promised in the title. It's best as an introductory work because it's not a 'deep dive' into any of them but focuses on the deeds and actions. That being said, there are many in this volume that I'm already well familiar with, some I want to learn more about, and a few I did not particularly know about. There are some very funny phases and pointed observations that I enjoyed and I bet any reader will too. As always with outlaws and other frontier characters, the truth is very difficult to get at. The writer acknowledges this in his explanation at the end. He also provides a good explanation that his particular interest is only in the action. That surely is more factual than trying to figure motivations and what in a lot of cases is simply rationalizations. Of special interest to me were some the original newspaper articles included at the back covering events a few days after they occurred such as the Dalton Gang double bank robbery. This is a good book for those interested in this topic.

Just about every story in this book is fascinating, and I did enjoy quite a few chapters, but the way it's written is so incredibly dry it can be hard to push through some passages. It's literally just detailing the story, and the only parts really worth reading are quoted from newspapers and other written accounts of the event. It jumps from robbery to robbery, listing off dates and locations, with no real character to the writing itself for the most part. When there is character, it honestly makes me roll my eyes. The author saying some stories are "rattlesnake snot and tumbleweed" just sounds like a kinda cringe attempt at cowboy talk. What little non-factual interjections there were read like that. I pretty much enjoyed this book in spite of how it was written. I could have gotten just as much information reading the newspaper articles myself.

I enjoyed the stories and learned some new names. The biggest flaw was the lack of decent editing. Some of the other reviews pointed this out but I really didn't think I would notice. I was wrong. I found myself rereading several passages two or three times before I understood what the author was trying to say. Then, there were some that I never did figure out. There were also some words that I didn't recognize and figured they were slang for the period or maybe just misspelled. Editing and further proof reading would help this book greatly.

Even if you've read the stories of the men and women who are featured in this book, it's still just such a fun read. He gets to the point without any minutiae so it's also a great place to start for people who just want to know enough or use this as an entry to longer, more detailed biographies or histories

impressive heroes of our wonderful past. I enjoyed the more descriptive acknowledgement of our folklore heroes and their realistic accomplishments. I recommend these short stories to anyone interested in the true wild west exploits of the old western eras.

I Iike the authors story telling. His accounts seem believable. I highly recommend. Do your self a favor and read the book

Great storytelling. I loved it, read it from start to finish.

From the Back Cover

The revered New York Times bestselling author traces the development of technology from the Industrial Age to the Digital Age to explore the single component crucial to advancement—precision—in a superb history that is both an homage and a warning for our future. The rise of manufacturing could not have happened without an attention to precision. At the dawn of the Industrial Revolution in eighteenth-century England, standards of measurement were established, giving way to the development of machine tools—machines that make machines. Simon Winchester takes us back to origins of the Industrial Age, to England where he introduces the scientific minds that helped usher in modern production. Winchester moves forward through time, to today’s cutting-edge developments occurring around the world, from America to Western Europe to Asia.

This is a great book. Simon Winchester has a wonderful writing style and is a skillful storyteller. His story is an important one due to the importance of precision instruments in our society. That said, there are a fair numbers of small errors and one more major one in the book.He states that, “Jefferson, while U.S. minister to France…told his superiors in Washington”. Jefferson was minister in France from 1785 to 1789. The act creating a capital district along the Potomac River was signed in July 1790. There was no Washington, D.C. when Jefferson was minister in France. There are lots of small problems in chapter 8 which discusses GPS. I’m the coauthor of "GPS Declassified: From Smart Bombs to Smartphones" which is included in his bibliography. https://www.amazon.com/GPS-Declassified-Smart-Bombs-Smartphones/dp/1612344089He states that Roger Easton, my dad, came up with the idea of using clocks in satellites for a passive ranging navigation system in 1973. In reality, the idea came from a conversation with Dr. Arnold Shostak, father of SETI researcher Seth Shostak, in 1964. He states, “Roger Easton, who at the time worked for the U.S. Navy’s then –named Space Applications Branch in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas.” Dad worked his whole Naval Research Lab career at its main office in Washington, D.C. The South Texas fence was a separate radar fence that was intended to be an adjunct to the primary Space fence so that an object’s orbit could be calculated on a single penetration of the two fences. Dad was there in September 1964 trying to synchronize the clocks in the two stations in this fence. He realized that a clock in a satellite could do this and later saw that it could also be used for navigation (following up on his April 1964 conversation with Dr. Shostak referenced above).Winchester then describes the car experiment which showed that passive ranging with clocks would work except he places it in Texas whereas it was in D.C. “The other he kept at the naval station in which he was working in South Texas. While the observers were watching the oscilloscope screens he had hooked up in the lab, he ordered Maloof to drive the car as far and fast as possible down a road, Texas Route 295, which was unfinished at the time and thus empty.”He’s describing the experiment which occurred on October 16, 1964. See page 9 from the “NRL GPS Bibliography - An Annotated Bibliography of the Origin and Development of the Global Position System at the Naval Research Laboratory” which states, “Easton’s passive ranging concept is demonstrated using a side-tone ranging receiver, modified from the South Texas experiment and placed at NRL, and a transmitter in Matt Maloof’s convertible as he drives it down the I-295 interstate. The road is finished but not yet opened to the public. Two Bureau of Naval Weapons representatives, John Yob and Chester Kleczek, observe the experiment."I-295 is the highway next to NRL’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. It’s not a state road in Texas. There is a reference to a South Texas experiment in the above account, but the test with Maloof’s convertible was in the D.C. area. In a 1996 interview with my Dad, they refer to the Wilson bridge across the Potomac in relation to the experiment. Wikipedia states that, “The first 7.8 miles (12.6 km) of the route opened on August 7, 1964 when the connecting segment of the Capital Beltway opened.” This fits in with an October 16th test. The most significant error is his assertion that Reagan opened GPS to civilian uses after the shooting down of KAL 007 in 1983. This mistake is common in the literature. However, GPS was a dual use military-civilian system from day 1. The NAVSTAR Global Positioning System Program Management Plan 15 July 1974 can be found under resources on my website (gpsdeclassified). On page 2-9, it states that, “The C/A Signal will serve as an aid to the acquisition of the P Signal, and will also provide a navigation signal in the clear to both the military and civil user.” Texas Instruments was making in 1981 the TI-4100 NAVSTAR Navigator GPS Receiver for commercial users. Thus, civilian use was built into GPS in 1974 and a civilian receiver was being sold in 1981. I highly recommend this book in spite of these minor errors.

A well-written and thoroughly engaging read, not that this should come as any surprise from this author. Hopefully the few small errors will be corrected in upcoming reprints. (Wonderful to have the input on some of these by Roger Easton's son, too!)I only have one caveat, which I notice has not been mentioned in these reviews- and it only pertains to the hardcover edition, which is the one I bought. The quality of the illustrations is simply unacceptable, especially for a full-price hardcover edition. This is partly the result of using poor-quality matte paper and partly because some of the illustrations are simply too small. There are numerous examples- nearly every picture, in fact - but here are a few from the last part of the book (where I am at present, having nearly finished devouring it.)- On page 316 there is a picture of the internals of a Seiko quartz watch. It is about 1 3/8" in diameter. Were it not for the accompanying text, it would be all but incomprehensible. On high-quaity gloss paper it would fare better, but not here.- Page 283, a picture of the first transistor, invented by Bell Labs. Poor contrast and detail, a fairly consistent problem with most of the pictures. On high-quality paper it would be OK.And the worst of all, on page 292 is a graph, with included text, of the famous Moore's Law which is, with the exception of the top line header, unreadable. The illustration is full-width (about 4.2") but even on the finest-quality paper it would be largely unintelligible. I measured the type under the headline, under good light, with an eye loupe, with a micrometer (well, this IS a book about precision!) It measured about .016", which is around 1.5pt. Under the loupe, it is clearly spotty, due to the rough surface of the paper, which would not be the case on good, gloss paper, assuming that the industry printing standard is still 2450 dpi. This makes the print on the bottles of Dr. Bronner's soap products look huge in comparison. The type along the diagonal line of the graph is even smaller, probably close to 1pt. This illustration ought to have been on its own page, in landscape mode (and, again, on better paper)I have a friend with the Kindle edition, and the illustrations are fine there. And in the case of the Moore's Law illustration, one can at least zoom in.This is a superb book, but which in its print edition doesn't really do justice to the material or the author, and reflects badly on the publisher. It could be argued that print editions are less popular now than electronic, but if you (in this case, Harper Collins) are going to do a print edition, especially a hard-cover full-price one by a well-known author, it should meet certain print quality criteria, and it seems to me that the publisher has really let us down in that respect.

I always buy Eyewitness travel guides before my trips. I find the mix of history, geography, cultural advice and tips, and practical information to be invaluable. I use them when I return to help identify pictures and places I cannot remember in the pictures I took. The books are quite heavy, so I do not travel with them. Their reviews of restaurants and hotels seems spot on.

As a native Bulgarian living in the US for 15+ years, I can tell you that you won't find a better travel book about Bulgaria. I go back home every year and continue to discover unknown local gems thanks to this book. Well done DK!

VERY GOOD

very helpful on our trip last summer

This book was a great help on my recent trip to Bulgaria. You can't beat Eyewitness Travel Guides!

An excellent guide to Bulgaria with details on all the tourist destinations and towns there.

Very pleased with this book. Of course I really only use DK guide books so it goes a little without saying...it was a no brainer. Condition of book was fine.

I picked up this book purely out of curiousity while browsing in the bookstore. The only exposure I'd had to Bulgaria as a tourist destination was the show from Rick Steves, which whetted my appetite but didn't leave me compelled to go. Then I picked up this book expecting a ho-hum response (after all you hear so little about it) and instead Bulgaria has shot to the top of my list of most desirable destinations. I'm working on going next year and am learning some of the language now. After viewing the amazing photos in this book, it compelled me to do further research online for more photos and information and I now realize what an underrated gem Bulgaria is. Black and white words in your ordinary travel guide can't do it justice, and I would never have realized what I was missing without the gorgeous full color photographs and architectural cutaways of this book. I wouldn't rely on the hotel and restaurant listings in the DK Eyewitness guides because I would want to use a guide that is more frequently updated and budget minded (I recommend Rick Steves Eastern Europe), however, this book cannot be beat for the armchair traveller, someone deciding where they should go (the pictures really help), or someone inspired by beautiful photos. It covers a lot of the countryside and small towns as well as big cities.
