Stoicism is a guide to living a happy, peaceful, and fearless life. It may be two thousand years old, but what it says – especially its way of life which the Stoics called “ethics” –  is as applicable today as it has ever been. Stoicism doesn’t need “improvement” but it does need to be expressed in current English and the examples need to be updated so it is relevant to modern life. There have been several attempts to do this. For example, Donald Robertson’s "Stoicism and the Art of Happiness" and "The Philosophy of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy" explain Stoicism in specific contexts. My own Unshakable Freedom: Ancient Stoic Secrets Applied to Modern Life is also an application of Stoic philosophy to a specific area of life – achieving personal freedom. William Irvine’s "A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy" takes a more comprehensive view of Stoicism. There is much to like in this book, but I felt Irvine was unduly defensive about Stoicism and deviated from it in some aspects. Therefore, I was looking for a comprehensive book on Stoicism that would be true the original Stoic thoughts, but would express them in current English with modern examples, without being defensive about it.In Massimo Pigliucci’s How to be a Stoic, I found such a book. I got it yesterday, read it overnight, and I like it. Here is why.1.It is clearly written.Stoic thinkers were also excellent communicators and good at expressing their thoughts. And there are many translations of their works which are also excellent. The problem is, when 2,000-year-old texts are translated they sound stilted to the modern ear. Sometimes the sentences are too long, the references too obscure, and the examples too far removed from our experience. Massimo’s book, on the other hand, uses relatively shorter sentences, familiar words, contemporary idioms, and examples that are of immediate relevance. It is easier to read and understand.2.The examples refer to problems we face today. The ancient Stoics faced imminent execution, exile, and arbitrary punishment. When Stoicism is explained using those examples, it can sound far removed from our concerns. Massimo applies Stoicism to our current concerns. This not only modernizes the Stoic examples, but points to solutions to problems that many people face.3.It answers objections to Stoicism without being defensive.Anyone who tries to interpret Stoicism to a modern reader has this challenge: How to relate our current life situation to what the Stoics said some two thousand years ago? Massimo uses a clever device to achieve this just like Epicteuts did. While Epicteuts had an imaginary conversation with Zeus, Massimo has several imaginary conversations with Epictetus. Pigliucci brings his concerns to Epictetus who then deconstructs them and shows how the Stoic solution really works. What I really liked here was the fact that the responses of this imaginary Epictetus are not a pale imitation of what Epictetus actually taught, but a clear interpretation of it. The result is a compelling picture of a Stoic way of life that is compatible with modern life.4.It uses personal experiences to illustrate the principlesThroughout the book, Massimo uses personal experiences. This works because it is immediate. It shows how he applied Stoicism in his own life. It is definitely easier to identify yourself with someone living today, leading a “normal” life than with someone who lived 2000 years ago under very different conditions. The book, in the tradition of Pierre Hadot, uses the framework of three disciplines of the Stoics: Desire, Action, and Assent. It starts with the basic premise of Stoicism that, “Some things are up to us and others are not.” Here Massimo discusses the dichotomy of control and why it makes sense. Then he goes on to discuss questions like: What does “living according to nature” mean? Why is life “playing ball?” How do preferred and dispreferred indifferents work? Most importantly, does God exist or is the universe a case of swirling atoms? While Epictetus (and other Stoics) were firmly in God’s camp, Massimo is not so sure. He prefers to be a skeptic, which should assure agnostics and atheists that the practice of Stoicism is open to anyone, believer or not. Then the book moves on to the discipline of action or how to live in this world. It starts discussing character (virtue) and provides several examples such as Helvidius Priscus and Malala Yousafzai. Massimo mentions that the virtues of Stoicism can also be found in various religions and it is important to preserve one’s integrity. We need to develop compassion toward others. One way to achieve this is to remember that people do bad things because they lack wisdom, rather than out of pure malice. Having role models can help us put things in perspective, so we can become better human beings. This section of the book concludes with a particularly good and useful discussion of coping with disability and mental illness, and the relevance of Stoic principles in such contexts. The third section of the book, the discipline of assent or how to react to situations, starts with a discussion of death and suicide. We are bothered by death because we are capable of contemplating it. Massimo believes that death is inevitable and takes issue with Ray Kurzweil (who believes in things like extraordinarily long life and singularity) for never wanting “to leave the party.” If you are thinking or worried about death, you may want to read this chapter. then moves on dealing with anger, anxiety, and loneliness. Here he reprises the idea that people do bad things because they don’t know any better. Think rationally about the situation to avert negative emotions. As Epictetus says “Logic defeats anger, because anger, even when it is justified, can quickly become irrational. So use cold, hard logic on yourself.” Massimo also discusses love and friendship before concluding the section with practical exercises. The Appendix section of the book has a brief but useful outline of the Hellenistic schools of practical philosophy.Massimo’s agnosticism and focus on Epictetus as the chief exponent of Stoicism parallel my own approach to Stoicism. I enjoyed reading the book. Reading it is like walking with a friend, who practices Stoicism, trying to explain to you what it is all about and how it helped him in his own life. A good read.

Despite its title, this book is more of a rumination on the core tenets of stoicism rather than a practical guide to living them.Do yourself a favor and if you are seriously interested in how to live more stoically, buy William Irvine's "A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy." That book not only introduces you to all the great stoic thinkers (rather than just Epictetus as Pigliucci does), it also includes exercises for practicing stoicism and is written in a far more straightforward manner.Once you've read that, then come back for this book. In it, Pigliucci introduces modern ideas to the ancient philosophy, like cognitive behavioral psychology, evolutionary biology and more. Consider this book more of a journeyman's guide rather than an apprentice's.

I say it upfront: I like this compact little book. That is most likely because I have always admired Stoicism as the ancient Western philosophical school most congenial to my own life-perspectives and values. But, in addition, I admire the thinking of Massimo Pigliucci. Currently a Professor of Philosophy at CUNY, he holds doctorates in genetics, evolutionary biology, and philosophy, and is—in my view—a superb writer. I have three other books of his: Tales of the Rational: Skeptical Essays About Nature and Science (2000), Denying Evolution: Creationism, Scientism, and the Nature of Science (2002), and Nonsense on Stilts: How to Tell Science from Bunk (2010).As you can observe from the subtitles of the books above, Pigliucci’s tone seems to have become less formal, less academic, more—shall we say—chatty over time. It is the “chatty” tone that is present throughout How to be a Stoic: Using Ancient Philosophy to Lead a Modern Life (2017) The informality of this introduction to Stoic philosophy is personal and conversational throughout, beginning with the modus operandi of the text: an imaginary dialog between Pigliucci and Epictetus (a worthy representative and proponent of Stoicism, indeed) as they walk the streets of Rome (if you surmised that Pigliucci is Italian you are most correct, of course; he was born and raised in Italy and completed this book in Rome on a sabbatical). The dialog is in three main sections: (1) The Discipline of Desire: What is Proper to Want and Not to Want, (2) The Discipline of Action: How to Behave in the World, (3) The Discipline of Assent: How to React to Situations. These three sections are subdivided into chapters. dealing with topics such as “Living According to Nature,” “God or Atoms,” “Disability and Mental Illness,” “On Death and Suicide,” “Love and Friendship,” and similar modern-day (perhaps ‘eternal’) issues—all discussed in 240 pages of text.I cannot think of a more attractive introduction to the tenets of Stoic Philosophy and their practical application to one’s personal life journey. Pigliucci is not joined at the hip to Epictetus as they stroll through Rome. He departs, at least mentally, on side trips—personal examples from his own life that illustrate the application of Stoic perspectives, the views of philosophers and scientists (Hume and Darwin are two such) whose views challenge Stoic assertions, and brief comments about Eastern and Western philosophies that compete with Stoicism for allegiance. All is done informally, as if one was sitting on a porch with Massimo on a warm summer day discussing “life” over lemonade, tea, or an alcoholic beverage (the latter in moderation, of course; it is, after all, Stoicism under discussion).I admit that books on philosophy will not rank high on lists of “summer reads.” Perhaps How to be a Stoic can be added to reading lists for when the air has more chill and life seems more serious. Or you can leave it off any list entirely. Up to you. But this book could be a help if you are in the situation Dante writes about in Canto I of the Divine Comedy, quoted by Pigliucci at the beginning of Chapter 1: "Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself within a forest dark, for the straightforward pathway had been lost." How to be a Stoic might be just the guide one needs to find the path again.

I was looking for a step by step book on how to approach modern Stoicism. This isn't it, and Massimo clearly explains why there can't be such a thing. His writing style is clear and I love his 'conversations' with Epictetus. He very much enlightened my thoughts on what Stoicism can be like. It's not an easy path, not because it's hard to be a Stoic, but because the habits of a lifetime are stubborn and not easy to change. I find myself re-reading it, and happy to do so, finding more useful thinking emerging with each reading.

About the Author

Phil Riggin has lived in Richmond, Virginia, since 1988, and his love for the James River and Richmond’s outdoor adventures are the biggest reasons why he has never wanted to leave. In the past seven years, Phil has dedicated more and more of his free time to volunteering and helping to develop and protect the great recreational amenities and natural beauty of the James River Park. Phil is a positive person, a team player, and sports have always been part of his life. He is a father, husband, cyclist, paddler, hiker, photographer, writer, soccer player, gardener, environmentalist, and someone who cares greatly about where he lives. Phil is a “take the stairs” kind of guy and finds ways to combine fitness with tasks―like biking to work, job assignments, volunteer duties, stores, etc. He is teaching his kids to do the same thing. Phil is a “buy local” kind of guy and supports any businesses that are friendly to cycling, walking, the outdoors, and that help make Richmond a better place to live. The child of an Air Force officer, Nathan Lott has lived and traveled widely in the United States, Europe, and the Near East. He credits his parents with fostering the appreciation of history, culture, and the natural world that serves him well as a writer. Turning his native curiosity to stories Virginia proved a rewarding task. In particular, the experience reinvigorated his environmentalism, and Nathan now works as executive director of the not-for-profit Virginia Conservation Network. Nathan holds a journalism degree from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, but maintains that the most valuable thing he did in college was meet his wife, Elizabeth, a minister. It was her seminary education that brought the couple to Richmond, where they reside with their young son and daughter.

While you’re there, stop by the Richmond National Battlefield Park Visitor Center at Tredegar Iron Works as you complete your hike. More information: nps.gov/rich In Brief This route is not an official hike―mapped and/or promoted by the City of Richmond―but with the opening of the T. Tyler Potterfield Bridge, it opens up a fantastic, easy, and safe loop for viewing the James River and the downtown skyline. Contact James River Park at (804) 646-8911. Description We suggest starting your visit at Brown’s Island, which is an island with a park that is host to many of Richmond’s premier outdoor events along the riverfront. Park your vehicle for free on 5th Street or in the Belle Isle parking lot just east on Tredegar Street. Tredegar Iron Works also has a paid parking lot. The bridge is across the street from Tredegar and a great place to start a hike around the loop. This hike will take a counterclockwise route around this loop. Runners, walkers, and hikers can now complete a scenic 2.5-mile loop that includes the Potterfield Bridge, the Floodwall Walk, 14th Street (Mayo) Bridge and the Pipeline Rapids Walkway. The surface is mostly gravel, sidewalk, or pavement, with a handful of grass, sand, or dirt patches in between. Walk in either direction; you won’t be disappointed and it is easy to follow the route. The T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge is named in honor of a senior planner for the city of Richmond who died in 2014 at age 55. He spent years advocating and planning for the bridge, which opened in December 2016. The former bridge was built in 1901 on top of an industrial dam from Brown’s Island to the south bank of the James River in Manchester. At nearly 0.3 mile long and less than 20 feet above the river, there are plenty of places to take in the views and hear the roar of the rapids. It has become one of Richmond’s most popular outdoor attractions―a hub for gawkers and adventure-seekers. It combines a picturesque location spanning the natural beauty of the James River in the middle of downtown with fantastic views of the city’s skyline. You’ll be in the center of the action both on and off the river. While crossing the bridge, the approach to south side offers views of the Manchester Climbing Wall and the overlook above, both worth a look if you have time, and there is access down to the base of the wall from the bridge. Just remember to not bother the belayers who are concentrating on supporting a climber. The 60-foot cut granite block wall is a remnant of the Richmond and Petersburg Railroad Bridge which spanned the James River for much of the nineteenth century. Dubbed affectionately as the “Mayan Ruins” due to its triangular shape, Manchester offers more than 40 routes that have evolved since the 1980s. There are several matching remnant piers lined across the James, and three are also marked and routed for climbs, according to the James River Park website, jamesriverpark.org. Continue along the paved path past the first wooden staircase to climb up to the top of the Manchester Climbing Wall. For this hike, take the next staircase to the top and if you want to see the downtown skyline from the overlook, follow the trail to the left. Retrace your steps and follow the paved path down to the gravel trail under the Manchester Bridge. (If you skip the staircase, it wraps around the hill.) As you walk down the path, you will see eight 17-foot-tall welded steel rings called “The Path Untraveled” by artist Joshua Wiener lined across the hills on the south side of the trails. They were installed in 2017 as part of the unveiling of the new Potterfield Bridge project. Follow the trail under high concrete pillars of the Manchester Bridge and pick up the winding trail over the gravel trail atop Floodwall Walk for about half a mile. This portion of the trail also offers nice panoramic views of the city skyline and the James River. The rapids through this section of the river are known as Second Break (Class IV) and Southside (Class III) rapids and depending on the water levels, you may spy some whitewater kayakers out enjoying the James. The Floodwall opened in 1994 and is designed to protect Richmond from floods of up to 32 feet with an average recurrence interval of 280 years, according to the City of Richmond. It is one of the largest flood-protection systems in the nation, and it opened miles of the James River to public access, with river walks, trails, and scenic overlooks. The total length is 3.2 miles, with 1.2 miles on the north bank of the James River and 2 miles on the south bank. The trail crosses over Norfolk Southern railroad tracks by way of a staircase and bridge then descends to a paved trail that leads to US 360/Hull Street. Take a left once the paved trail meets the sidewalk and pass through the Floodwall. Watch for traffic as you cross the 14th Street Bridge, which is actually two spans with Mayo Island in the center. The sidewalk is narrow and there is no buffer from the roadway. You will pass a recycling center on the left, and then the second span begins. The trail turns left and crosses train tracks before descending at a short staircase and ladder to the Pipeline Walkway under the CSX railway viaduct. I suggest checking the water levels in the James (web search “Richmond Westham Gauge”) before attempting to walk along the metal Pipeline catwalk as it and portions of the trail can be inundated with water if the James is above 12 feet. This is a great place to watch kayaks and rafts playing in the rapids, considered Class III-IV, depending on the water levels. Due in part to the health of the James River, downtown Richmond is not an unusual place to see wildlife. You can find bald eagles, peregrine falcons, osprey, and great blue heron, all likely to prey on the fish that migrate up the Falls of the James each year. Great blue heron are slender, greyish birds with sharp beaks, skinny legs, and huge wingspans. For several years, a large rookery could be found on Vauxhall Island, across from Pipeline Rapids walkway, but in recent years the heron appear to have moved elsewhere to raise their offspring. Once the catwalk ends, take precaution as you walk for about 100 yards atop a narrow, uneven concrete section of the pipeline. There are no handrails and if you have to pass oncoming walkers, it might be best for one person to stop and let the other pass. The trail passes along the sandy and rooted shoreline among volunteer trees for about 300 feet before climbing up to Brown’s Island under the Manchester Bridge. Follow the concrete walking trail back to the west side of the island to complete the loop. If the Pipeline Walkway is not to your liking, continue along the Floodwall, and as you reach the pavement, look for the Canal Walk. There will be a monument adorned with a large cross to commemorate Captain Christopher Newport’s first visit to the place that became Richmond, on May 24, 1607. Continue along the Canal Walk onto the east end of Brown’s Island and follow the concrete path and bridge of your choice to get back to your vehicle. GPS Coordinates: N 37° 32' 7.1459'' W 77° 26' 36.3347'' Several GRTC bus routes stop within 1-3 blocks from the park entrance. Brown’s Island has bike racks. Brown’s Island is easily accessible from both I-95 and I-195. From I-95, exit onto 7th Street heading south (Exit 75). If entering the city from the west by the I-195 downtown expressway (toll required), exit eastward onto Byrd Street and make an immediate right onto 7th Street. Continue south to a roundabout intersection with 10th and Tredegar streets. Turn right onto Tredegar. Historic Tredegar has a paid parking lot, which might be best on a crowded weekend along the riverfront. You may also park for free along the road on 5th Street or farther down the road in a gravel lot for Belle Isle on the right, if there are open spaces.

One of the best simplest reads of legal research

Worthless. You don't need this new edition what so ever. Just buy a used edition for $5.00 if you really need it. And don't listen to your dumb law professors. Legal research is a skill you can learn on your own or by reading quick guides for free online.

I like it.

As a praise and worship minister, I love singing about and to my God. It's always a pleasure to bless His name with the fruits of my lips. I did not know that praising and worshipping God was the best thing anyone can do. I knew praise was a weapon of mass destruction to the kingdom of darkness. I knew God inhabits in the praises of His people because He loves praise but I did not know that praise does something magnificent for the one giving praises to a God. I didn't know praise chases away stress, worries, discouragement and all kinds of depressing feelings from us when we praise God! I experienced it first hand during a very difficult time in my life and thought wow, I can't go a day without praising God because that was my only way of truly focusing on Jesus and not being consumed by my problems! No wonder there are so many depressed and disgruntled Christians out there today. Everyone keeps saying pray pray pray and they pray and still remain worried and depressed! Well now I know the key to God's supernatural peace surpassing all understanding! I will Use it at all times!

I love Andrew Wommack's teachings. I learn more from his website teachings and books than I have ever learned in my whole life time of going to church. His teachings are amazing. He has opened up a new way to look at things that I never thought about or heard. I regret that I didn't know about his teachings 20 years ago. It would have made a big difference in my life. I am just now realizing how to have a true relationship with the Lord and learning the right way to pray. I am so blessed, thanks to God.

This is a great book that helps put things into perspective and really opens up your mind to why you need to praise God! If you have enjoyed any of Andrew's teaching you will get a lot out of this book. I was going through some problems recently and when I read in this book how we need to not dwell on our issues but praise the Lord, truthfully I didn't want to! But I did it anyway and what a difference it made! He really ties everything to Scripture and than makes it easy to trust the teaching.

Very good. We know through scripture God says to praise him but we don't realize all the reasons why and how it can affect our lives if we do and if we don't. I can tell you since I started praising God more I have more peace, joy and it's increased my faith. A great gift for family and friends!

Most people feel that "doing" is necessary to please God. This book does a good job of reinforcing that God does not require "doing" to be pleased. This is especially important to me because an illness has left me totally paralyzed at periods in my life. It's obvious that there is no "doing" during these times and is helpful to know that I can still please God.

I haven't completely finished this book yet, but WOW it is wonderful! Praising our God is such an important part of our worship!!

I was brought up in many denominations and carried different baggage from each one, but I have gotten fresh revelation knowledge from reading all of Andrew Wommack Books and am now seeking my Pastor to see where I can be a blessing to my church. Thank You for your honesty of life trials and learning process. I am praising God 24/7 now and am enjoying more of His blessings and opportunity to share with others. Praise God!

I decided to take the risk and check this out for an upcoming Bali trip.Pros: - It has listings for an extensive number of birds, nearly 35 different bird categories, one of which, for example the Flowerpeckers/Sunbirds/Spiderhunters covers 16 species.- For each, there is a single, good quality color photo sufficient for identifing many of these islands species who tend to be pretty colorful and unique.- Useful short page of description which usually includes main identifying features, may mention plumage of female or juvenile vs male, or similar species, and typically mentions habitat/which islands, and how common.cons- Index is not good. there is just 1 clickable link that takes you to the section with all the species, so it will be helpful to know bird types (there is a thumbnail page linked in the table of contents with categories) so you can use the kindle search function to avoid endless scrolling.- you will find yourself skimming to find out if the bird is even on your island, and it isn't always explicitly stated. There really should be a map at the bottom of each listing for range.Overall, This will be sufficient to ID many of the birds you will see. It make take some work to find them in the book, and this is best suited for a Kindle App or Fire, rather than the actual kindle, because of color photos and just easier scrolling. I think it is worth 8$ not to carry a physical book, definitely!

Not a bird book in any sense but a collection of the author’s photographs of birds in the region. Completely useless as a field guide.

if you have like I do this is a must have for South Carolina bikers. Great book for all the popular places and the place is not well known. If you want off the beaten path this is your book

I've had some bad experiences with other books in this series, so I opened this book somewhat afraid of what I might find. Fortunately, this guide was not the disaster I had feared. This guide describes a large number of trails (too many to count; I would guess 300-400) all over South Carolina. Distance and difficulty range from flat, paved 0.3 mile trails in small city parks to difficult 10+ mile hikes in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area. De Hart deserves credit for devoting many pages to trails in lesser-known destinations such as county parks, university-run preserves, and private-run preserves. While information about national forest and state park trails is readily available online, trail guides such as this one are needed to help hikers find the lesser-known, but no less rewarding, trails.Since De Hart is one of the best trail authors available, it comes as no surprise that most of the trail descriptions are excellent. Unfortunately, as a previous reviewer has noted, the same cannot be said for the maps. A few of the major trails (Foothills Trail, Swamp Fox Trail, etc.) have nice maps including contours, but most of the trails have no maps at all. Indeed, it is hard to follow even the best written trail description without some sort of map. This is the main weakness of this guide and the main reason I have docked it one star.In summary, if you plan to buy only one guide to South Carolina hiking, this would NOT be the one; for that, I would recommend either "Hiking South Carolina" by Clark and Dantzler or the new "50 Hikes in South Carolina" by Johnny Molloy. However, those two guides focus mainly on state park and national forest trails. Thus, if you want a more comprehensive guide that includes many lesser-known destinations, then this guide deserves your consideration.
