It turned out these young men were drafted into war by Japanese to fight Russians; captured by Russians to fight Germany in Eastern front; captured again by Germans to fight Americans in the Normandy. It was an incredible story of survival and fate by itself to research on separately.Also discussed are innovation such as various landing crafts by Higgins, special wedge for Sherman tanks to break out of Normandy hedgerows, and interesting British invention of obstacle clearing vehicles and DD tanks, etc.. And if you like strategies, there are many intriguing stories on how each side trying to fool each other for the best advantage.I picked the slightly more expensive version with photos, and found it well worth it. The photos add to more vivid impression of what is described in the context. Photos look better though on a larger tablet. Overall, this is a book I am so glad that I have come across.

I first read this book 20 years ago when it first came out. It gripped me to the core. I would read 100 pages a day and not want to put it down. It gripped me the same now as it did then. This is an amazingly detailed view of the Allied buildup, training, crossing, and landing on the Normandy beaches. The detail of the Omaha Beach landings is the most prevalent part of the book, told from the perspective of the grunts who did the fighting. This is definitely focused on Omhah Beach, but there is plenty of good information on the other four beaches as well as the Airborne operations. Excellent reading. Put this in your library, you will not be disappointed.

I've read several of Mr. Ambrose's books and they do what popular history needs to do in the best way possible. Without being didactic or overly academic and detailed, Mr. Ambrose conveys both the strategic and tactical objectives sought on D-Day, peppered throughout with excerpts from oral histories of those who were there to keep the reader involved on several levels.As a war history buff, I bounce between scholarly works and popular takes on any given subject in order to gain an overall narrative into which the deeper studies can then be fitted. I think Stephen Ambrose is an excellent source for such narratives, and this one I went through quickly and with great enthusiasm.Having visited Normandy just a month ago, it was a particular joy to actually be able to put place names in the book to those villages, bridges, and beaches I had visited.Well worth the time!

I have read many reviews from other readers that complain about the story jumping around, not enough German perspective.There were so many people involved and quoted, the story can at times be confusing. By slowing down a bit it reads just fine.I think there is plenty of German inclusion, keep in mind this book is absolutely written from the American and British perspective.If Ambrose were German I would expect otherwise.I learned a tremendous amount of info reading this book giving me a different perspective of the politics and decision making process to go.

I work for the airlines so was able to hop on a flight to Paris, drive four hours to Normandy all with Ambrose's book in tow. Started at Utah Beach and worked my way down the coast. His book was my bible and brought everything to life. Accurate to a "T." It brought that harrowing invasion to a new found realization. A 'must read' for anyone who ever plans to go there. His stories, coupled with historic markers, museums and displays made an indelible and lasting memory of a trip of a lifetime. What a memorial to those who were there, and a reminder to those of us living.

It is a long book (583 pages); however, it's worth the effort. I read it in preparation for a trip to Normandy in the fall. Generally, I'm aware of what happened on D day; however, I was unaware of the details. This book filled in all the gaps. It gives a good description of everything from Utah Beach on the right flank to Sword beach on the left.As with his other books, Ambrose provides a good description of the big picture, I.e., the strategic view as well as what is going on at the foxhole level. This book helps the reader get at least a hint of what was going on during that momentous day. We sometimes lose sight of the fact that events like this are made up of the thousands of actions of individuals. The author helps us see that and see how it all fits together. For anyone who truly wants to understand what happened on D day, there is no better source than this book!

I have read dozens of biographies of British and Continental royal personages. This biography of Princess Margaret is certainly the most unusual royal biography I have read. I think it is also the most amusing and entertaining. Most royal biographies, especially authorized ones, are hagiographies. Examples of this genre are William Shawcross’s “The Queen Mother” (2009) and Pope-Hennessy’s “Queen Mary” (1959).Craig Brown in writing this biography of Princess Margaret has broken with tradition in two mains respects. The book is the most irreverent royal biography I have read. It is the very antithesis of a hagiography. He has also created a new and possibly unique biographical style. Instead of the usual cradle to grave narrative, the reader is presented with ninety-nine glimpses from Princess Margaret’s life. Most are glimpses of her at unimportant social events that tend to highlight her moody, capricious, inconsiderate and often haughty behavior.Although the book is highly readable and entertaining one must wonder whether it can really qualify as a biography at all. Although I understand the author’s boredom with conventional biographies, royal and otherwise, I think the presentation of this book deprives it of any historical significance. A reader unfamiliar with the story of Princess Margaret would be left with a very incomplete picture of her indeed. Where, for example, is Princess Margaret as a mother?The Princess had two children with Anthony Armstrong-Jones, later Lord Snowdon. They are Viscount Linley and Lady Sarah Chatto and she also had three grandchildren. Yet there are hardly any references to them in this book and there is no description of the relationship Princess Margaret had with them. The only reference to Viscount Linley is in connection with the auction of his mother’s large collection of jewelry and other possessions after her death in which he is portrayed as a rather cold-blooded individual who did not hesitate to try to sell at auction even her 1957 portrait by Annigoni and was forced to buy it back from the auction house only after pressure was brought to bear by his father and sister.We learn virtually nothing of Princess Margaret’s relationship with her sister, Queen Elizabeth II. Although Princess Margaret had a phone on her desk with a direct line to the Queen’s apartments at Buckingham Palace and although the two apparently chatted by phone almost every morning, few details of what was by all accounts a very loving relationship are portrayed.More details are provided about the relationship between Princess Margaret and her mother, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. They at one time both resided at Clarence House on different floors and communicated by letters delivered from one to the other by liveried footmen. The author describes some interactions between the pair that suggest that Princess Margaret’s treatment of her mother was often disrespectful and even cruel, but the Queen Mother seems to have accepted all the slights and insults from her daughter with the grace and dignity she always displayed.Towards the end of the book the author indulges in “what ifs.” He places emphasis on what if Princess Margaret had been the first-born child of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the current Queen, had been the second child. He suggests quite correctly I believe that Princess Margaret could never have carried off the royal job with the immense dignity and devotion of Queen Elizabeth II. However, this does not take into consideration the fact that the Queen was raised with the idea that she might one day inherit the throne, particularly after King Edward VIII’s abdication, and Princess Margaret was left to fulfill a secondary role.A more important “what if” is I think would Princess Margaret have been a different person if her marriage to her first love Group Captain Peter Townsend had not been prevented by the British establishment? The answer to that question cannot possibly ever be known. Would she have grown bored with him or would she have settled into a comfortable and conventional royal life since the Group Captain had been a favorite of George VI and was well acquainted with royalty and royal protocol? My sense is that Princess Margaret was left embittered by being deprived of an opportunity for a happy married life and that all her undesirable characteristics that the author shows such delight in portraying were the result of that early bad experience.The author points out that perhaps Princess Margaret’s most prominent characteristic was her unshakeable sense of being fully royal. She delighted in her title “Her Royal Highness, the Princess Margaret” and would often rebuke even close friends who failed to treat her with due deference. At dinner parties and functions of various types she would often use as an icebreaker the fact that she was the only person in the realm who could claim to be both the daughter of a King and the sister of a Queen.The question that arises though is can her sense of being royal be regarded as a defect? Today even among the British people there seems to be a desire that members of the Royal family be just like them and have the common touch. This explains the enormous popularity of Prince Harry who likes to be just one of the boys and has entered a marriage that among old established royalty would be unthinkable. However, what is the purpose of Royalty if they are going to be just like everyone else?The author takes a malicious delight throughout this book in pointing to Princess Margaret’s often bad behavior. It is true that Princess Margaret liked the arts and bohemia and therefore would often socialize with a rather raffish crowd. Therefore, she wanted to both have her royal cake and eat it. The author also tends to poke fun at the Princess’s appearance drawing attention to the fact that some called her “The Royal Dwarf” because of her small stature. However, the illustrations provided, except those towards the later part of her life, show a truly beautiful woman superbly dressed and coiffed and with a wonderful smile. I saw Princess Margaret once when she came to open a Clinic at a hospital where I worked, and she was the very epitome of what one might consider a Royal personage.In conclusion, I found this book tremendously interesting and entertaining. However, reading it for me was a kind of guilty pleasure. I think the author has been somewhat unfair to Princess Margaret and the definitive biography of her remains to be written. She deserves more credit than she gets in this amusingly malicious book.

Scandalous yes! The author spares no punch when describing the antics of Princess Margaret. A difficult women for sure, perhaps made more impossible by her position in the royal family. At times the author makes you laugh, and at other times you feel sorry for Margaret. The pains and joys of living a privileged and painful life.

a one off as the English might say, Princess Margaret lived a life, mostly a lonely life, although unrequited love from Pablo Picasso came as a bit of a surprise. Although interred at St George's Windsor, interesting to note she was cremated in a public facility in Slough between Oxford and London and mostly known for being the hometown of the actress Tracey Ullman. That said, she was blunt and probably not intended to assist but as Her Majesty herself said, I'm used to it. She married badly with Tony Snapshot, Sir Antony Armstrong Jones or Tony as she refers to him but they had two lovely children, the furniture maker Viscount Linley and Lady Sarah Chatto whose son Arthur Chatto is the latest royal heartthrob. A sad figure, the Queen felt sorry for her younger sister. The best anecdote, however, is not in the book when she says to Elton John that Bennie and the Jets was the most atonal song ever written, apparently Sir Elton agreed. In the end, the truth hurts.

I'm fascinated, but not surprised, by the almost equal 5 star and 1 star reviews and it's really a love-it-or-hate it read. If you want a gushing, respectful Royal biography pass this book up - however - if you want a rollicking, very very funny, appalling and no-holds-barred peek into Royal privilege and the sycophants who lust after it - well - this is the book for you. The best parts are the diary excerpts from Princess Margaret's many frenemies, who evidently put up with her antics solely to be able to document her extraordinary and ultimately self-destructive behavior. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

However, the book leaves you without a clear understanding of the Princess herself; on what made her tick, and just focusing as it does on the gossip of others.This leaves you with a lop-sided picture of the person...somewhat unfair, I thought. Often Princess Margaret was elegant, vivacious, and entertaining in a way her dutiful older sister could never be, but at other times she could be boring, snobby, and insufferable. Craig Brown has produced an account which is as mercurial as the Princess herself: often fascinating and hilarious, but at other times stuffy and frankly, tedious.This is not a standard biography but a series of 99 short chapters or vignettes, arranged in roughly chronological order, designed to shed some daylight on the Princess' life. Some are obviously fiction, like the description of her marriage to Pablo Picasso or the 1977 Christmas speech from "Queen Margaret I." Others are drawn from more traditional biographies of the Princess or her family members, and still others are obviously based on gossip passed from person to person within the Princess' circle of friends and acquaintances. There's a lot of repetition: it grew wearisome to read through all the nasty jokes the Princess' husband Lord Snowdon used to play on her, and I really don't see the point of summarizing obituaries or of a detailed list of every single item sold off by the Princess' children after her death in 2002, or indeed of reprinting advertisements listing the amenities of the Princess' former vacation spot on Mustique. But perhaps that was Brown's point: that Princess Margaret, despite being an intelligent and often witty woman, led an empty and tedious life.

I love a good middle grade book where the kids are the heroes. This one was good, but fell short of what I was hoping for in a middle grade sci-fi novel.I did love the pace of the book. It flowed very well, and was quite the page turner at times. I liked that Vick and Tara make such a great team despite everything that happens to them. I also liked how Daisy was written like she was a part of the family. The ending was perfect. It couldn't have been better.I think if the book was written for an older audience, I would have liked it better. Some of the lingo seemed like it was more suited to a young adult novel. I didn't think it was necessary to point out if someone was white, black, or African American in here. It didn't seem like it was important to the story, and was distracting to me.Even though it wasn't my favorite book, I would still recommend it to others. Young and old.

An easy read and jam packed with good character development. Especially evident within the realm necessary for a short story to work. This tale is written with feasible concepts that will not seem dated over time. Even though, the assumption is, that they most assuredly will become Science Fact and no longer Science Fiction. I grew up with the Asimov, Heinlein, and Philip K. Dick crew in my youth. This tale by Will McIntosh made me a time traveler, yet again.

Love the setting and the characters. A scarily believable Dystopian society and interesting take on how things could work out in the future. A great mix of YA and sci-fi ideas in a fast paced story.

This is a fast paced, fresh idea about a handful of kids left to fend for themselves, making their way in a dystopian world of violence, hunger, and technology. Read this--I loved it!!

My son first read this when he was 9 and loved it. I’d guess he’s read it more than 10 times now.

I loved this fast-paced page turner ... the amazing bond between brother and sister, the creative blend of dystopian society and the struggles to survive ... and goodness in many. Love how they all worked together in the end a truly heartwarming story!

Even though I'm twenty-four years old I still love to read a good Middle Grade book. Watchdogs is definitely one of them. I enjoyed this book so much I hope there's more to come to this Watchdog world. Will McIntosh's writing was so enjoyable. He gave all the characters such great personalities and it was so smooth. I couldn't put this book down, and read it in one sitting.Action packed with heartfelt moments that had you cheering for all the right reasons. Pre-Teens and a little younger will definitely love this story, but if you like fun little adventures full of action, I recommend this to you! There's also a lot of serious aspects in the story, I think it really shows that autism doesn't hold people back and can make you stronger than most people. The children in this story are homeless and have gone through some tragedy, but they are all strong and I think can really inspire young minds. It even taught me a few things.I heard this could be made into a movie or a tv-show and I think that would be awesome! The story is perfect for both. I'd personally love to see a live action movie of these Watchdogs, but I heard it could be picked up by the makers of How To Train A Dragon and you can't go wrong with that animation!I will definitely be checking out other books by Will McIntosh. I am already extremely excited to read his YA novel Burning Midnight!

I read this with my 8 yr old and 11 yr old sons. We enjoyed the story and discussed what it meant to us at length. This book is about more than two siblings trying to survive the hardships of homelessness, poverty, hunger, and a criminal element. Orphans, twins Vick and Tara have been abandoned by the people they thought they could trust and are thrust into a life they are not prepared for. This is a story about two kids learning to trust themselves, listen to their intuition, think critically, be creative, and rely on themselves and each other.One of the elements my sons liked was a deeper understanding of autism and how it affects a young person like Tara. They also feel like this story emphasized the importance of education, since many of the characters' survival skills were learned while they were still in school. It also stresses the responsibility and obligations we have for each other, family or not. As my youngest son says, "We have to take care of each other and ourselves."

I purchased 5 books these for my 84 year old mom who has Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I skimmed over parts of the books. My Mom found easy explanations about the Irritable Bowel, Diverticulosis vs Diverticulitis, and Colitis. She Learned more about the foods that she should avoid and the reasons. She found many helpful dinner recipes. The books were easy to read in layperson language. I'am a Nurse of 20 years. This is a general review for all five books that I purchased.

After recently being diagnosed with RA, I found this book and quickly ordered. It really helped calm my nerves and is helpful. The author (an RA patient herself) helps guide through the process and advises on do's & don't through experience & research. A must read if newly diagnosed.

After 28 years of suffering in hell. This book has changed my life. NONE of the many, many doctors has ever suggested the things in this book. I had one idiot doctor tell me I had to eat more Bran. WRONG KIND OF FIBER. I have almost completely pain free from following what the books says to do. I eat tummy friendly foods and avoid the ones that make it flair up. I take the soluble fiber tablets which are really working. I CAN'T RECOMMEND THIS BOOK HIGHLY ENOUGH.

I have suffered with IBS my entire life and I am retired now. Diagnosed in 1980. Found this book in 2005. Written by a woman from Seattle who suffered since childhood. She has done all the work by eliminating problem food, etc. So I bought the book and used all her info. She has a few recipes, too. It dramatically changed my life by directing me to the correct food and the elimination of the wrong food causing severe cramps and diarrhea. I know the causes such as...do not eat artificial sugars! Causes severe cramps and diarrhea just like Lactose Intolerance which I have.

Heather's work is outstanding. Her program is the only one that brought me relief from my IBS symptoms. Thank God for the work she did through the years. Doctors and gastroenterologists couldn't bring me relief and didn't even seem to believe me that I was in pain. Following her program, I can stay completely symptom-free!

After getting very little information from my family doctor and a gastroenterologist, I was very frustrated! This book described my symptoms and explained why I was having them. I made the dietary changes suggested and have completely reversed my IBS symptoms! I'm a teacher, on my feet, and trapped in my room all day. Running to the bathroom 6-7 times was not an option. Thank you Heather Van Vorous!

Enormous help! One change has improved situation 80%!

I have struggled for years with stomach issues, and have tried the latest advice saying eat whole wheat, whole grains, and lots of lettuce and yogurt. All of these things are IBS triggers! I was also surprised to hear that good quality white bread has fiber in it (it is the kind of fiber that is easy on the stomach). Well, that is something that is not talked about in today's health magazines and shows, but now I see why I was so miserable. This book is changing my life in a positive way and I will buy Heather's other items too.
