About the Author

Joey Rive played on the ATP Tour for 8 years, competing in each of the 4 Grand Slams, and achieved a top 60 player ranking in singles and top 50 ranking in doubles. Rive also played Davis Cup tennis for Puerto Rico and practiced with the U.S. Davis Cup team. Rive has been inducted into the Hall of Fame at Florida State University, where he won MVP honors for his team and conference as a player. He also received Tennis magazine's Sportsman of the Year Award. After his successful playing career, Rive coached at Florida State University, the University of Alabama, and Texas Christian University. He produced multiple All-Americans, two conference titles, and one NCAA final four finish. During his tenure as a college coach, he was voted PTR College Coach of the Year. Rive also spent three years as a USTA national coach, working with Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish, Taylor Dent, Robby Ginepri, and Alex Bogomolov. Rive is a USPTA, PTR, and USTA certified high-performance and sports coach. Currently, he is a teaching professional at T Bar M Racquet Club in Dallas, Texas. For almost three decades, Scott Williams has been an internationally renowned coach working with players such as No. 2 ATP Tour player Tommy Haas and No. 1 ATP Tour doubles player Max Mirnyi. Williams is the author of Serious Tennis (Human Kinetics) and author and producer of the recently released Spiritually Tough Tennis DVD. He is president of Match Point Ministries and was voted the 2009 Coach of the Year, receiving the Ace Excellence Award for his work with upcoming junior tennis players. Williams is currently the tennis director at Saint Andrew's School in Boca Raton, Florida. He is certified as a USTA high-performance coach, USPTA level 1 professional, and PSIA level III instructor. Williams has been ranked nationally in both tennis and skiing and has played professional satellite and challenger events in Europe, South America, and the United States. He has won a total of 19 state championships in both tennis and skiing in Florida and Washington.

If there was a tennis course in college, this would definitely be a required textbook. It is an incredible resource for learning the basics of tennis, different drills, and strategies. I highly recommend it for tennis teachers or coaches, or really anyone who wants to learn about tennis. Each chapter includes a different stroke of tennis, and breaks down the different steps/elements of each stroke as well as how to hit different types of shots from that stroke (i.e. forehand--inside out, serve--slice). And there are chapters dedicated to drills which is also really nice. I don't recommend this book for someone who is trying to learn tennis by themselves, though. This is definitely not a "learn-how-to-play tennis kit" (if those even exist). It's just a good resource for teachers, or those who are trying to refresh and review their basic tennis skills.

Solid basic book on getting started.

This is a good tennis book covering a lot of ground, including basic techniques, drills, tactics and strategies. There are some nice real life pictures to illustrate the techniques being discussed. It would have been even more useful if the authors had included more diagrams when explaining the drills/tactics. Overall still a good read and reference book.

Solid book with some excellent info. More visuals would be nice, though.

I really enjoyed this book, and am implementing some of the drills in practice situations. This is a great manual for any coach looking for a little more variety in drills for his/her players.

The pros:This book has a good layout, colorful pictures and is easy to read. It explains many basic points well, like the different grips, stances, swings etc. The title should rather be "Basics of Tennis".Cons:The book is a big failure when it comes to describing drills. Almost every drill is described in words, which makes it extremely difficult to understand. What could have been easily described through a one or more pencil sketches are crammed into long lines. I wish the author took cues from any Yoga or Golf lessons book to get ideas on how to depict multiple moves.Skills are gained through proper techniques and practice with drills. The verbose instructions stop making sense as they get longer and harder to follow, which resulted in me learning little from it.

(The cover that is appearing for my review is not the one on the book or audio I had.) Again, I found the research impressive, and the story riveting. The head-hopping continued, and I noticed a few mispronounced words. “Julius,” the male slave, also sounded too much like “Julia,” Marcus’s sister, most of the time. I loved how this one ended, but the last part, where it just told about what happened to the family, should have been worked into story form and not just recounted.

This is the second book in a series and with the teaser at the end of the first book, you can't help but want to read the second. The main characters from the first book are still there (those that survived) and the addition of new characters only serves to give you more characters to care about.Francine Rivers does not follow all the rules of Christian fiction... and in not doing so, her work is fascinating, makes you think about what kind of person you are or could be, and gives you hope.You'll want to forego sleep reading this one.

My pastor loaned the 1st book in this trilogy to me, and after about 20 pages of it, I ordered the remaining 2 books from Amazon. I've never read anything so in depth with how I imagine events actually took place in that era, as well as the emotional upheaval that these characters experienced. I could find nothing wrong with the historical flow either. I can hardly wait to read the last one.

I often buy books for my wife, who is an avid reader. This book came well recommended by other reviewers so I bought the series. After reading the book, my wife insisted that I read it also. While it is my opinion that these books are written for women, I was surprised at how good of a read it was. I have never been a big fan of Christian fiction, mostly because the characters never seemed real to me. Even the sinners in the books had high moral standards that didn't fit the character. As an example, the pilot and the flight attendant in the first Left Behind book had been involved for months, but had never been intimate. It didn't seem real in the book or the movie. Ms Rivers paints characters with real human feelings, desires, weaknesses as well as strengths. The sinners engage in sinful acts, but without the lurid details of common fiction. There is action, violence and blood in the book that paints the people of Rome as history has shown them to be.

It is a rare find when a sequel is as good as the original, but Francine Rivers has succeeded admirably with her second installment of this trilogy in AN ECHO IN THE DARK. After reading the first one, I knew I had to read on, but never expected this book to be as good. I don't read a lot of fiction, but have a strong feeling there will be many books by this superb writer in my future.God gives us each unique gifts in life, and he gave Francine Rivers the blessed gift of writing. She has recognized her gift and deftly uses it to glorify Christ by witnessing through her stories. I do not believe it is possible to read either of these first books of this trilogy without them strengthening ones faith, or perhaps even altering your life altogether. That's how profound these books truly are.I don't want to give away too much of the story, but readers here will most likely have already the first installment, so I will say that Rivers will make your heart ache for Hadassah's identity to be revealed, only to keep your incessantly turning page after page, mired in anguish and crying out for her precious soul to be rewarded. Throughout this book, as in the first, your emotions will run high as you smile, you cry, you rejoice in the glory of God as others accept His salvation.I anxiously await the third and final installment in this trilogy, as well as exploring other works by this author. I'm giving a 3/5 until I'm done with the book.So far the author believes that Jigsaw is the series protagonist which is just a gross misunderstanding. She also uses references to the movies as footnotes (which include all main cast members, producer, director, year) with three to a page when the entirety of it could be boiled down to approximately 20 sources in a numbered list in the back to save space.The overall impression is that the author really didn't understand the movies, but wanted to glorify the villain of the films. It reads like a college freshman paper so far.

I'm a huge fan of Saw, and while the book is 20% philosophy, 80% description of the traps, who dies, why, whether they're winnable or not, it's still a fascinating book. My only regret is that either the author is not familiar with Ayn Rand or the objectivist philosophy plays no role in the Saw series.Objectivism is about rational selfishness and individualism. It rejects the lie of the "common good." Saw is more collectivistic in his approach, Jigsaw most likely believes that his rehabilitation efforts lead to the greater good.

While not, by any means, a fan of films which have gained a tremendous popularity lately, having become affectionately known, for their gratuitous violence and cruelty as "torture porn" amongst horror film aficionados, I am a huge fan of the Saw series.How does this series, one might ask, differ from a host of seemingly very similar (yet inferior) films? Author C.J. Patton brilliantly answers this and many other relevant questions in her tremendously well researched and extraordinarily insightful look into the Saw films.Here we explore, in great detail, the motivation and the mind of one of the cinemas great villains......or, perhaps, one of its most misunderstood heroes.Author Patton delves deeply into the shadings and grays and charcoals that make up the mind of a serial killer and it is that which most fascinated me.Jigsaw genuinely feels as though he is performing an ultimate good and service by forcing individuals, for whom the gift of life is unappreciated, to reevaluate through precariously intimate flirtation with near death itself experience.Patton explores the inner workings of his mind, his thought process, and the flaws within his internal logic which will ad, for those who've seen the films time and again, layers upon layers which escape one during the viewing experience and will greatly enhance ones appreciation of these darkly masterful meditations on good and evil, right and wrong.For anyone having seen the Saw films this book is an absolute must have addition to one's library and, having read it, one will immediately find the urge to immerse oneself into entire series again with a new understanding which will enhance ones enjoyment of them immeasurably.....Five stars and an excellent late night read which comes highly recommended to any Saw fan, horror fan or Psychology buff.....

Great book

This is a great read. Even if you don't know anything about the SAW movies, this book makes you think about what's right and wrong in a whole new way. It's rare that a critical reviewer digs this deeply and skillfully into the ethical messages of a movie, especially a horror movie. This author did a terrific job of explaining historical principles of moral philosophy and then showing how those concepts are an essential part of the SAW story. It can be really hard to apply academic philosophy to popular culture, but "Cutting Edge" does it really well.For SAW fans, you will love the thoughtful analysis of the messages and characters, and you will be amazed by the detail and thoroughness of the trap index. C.J. identified some traps that I didn't even realize were traps! Best of all, the book has its own great twist that both echoes and pays homage to the phenomenal plot twists of the SAW films.My only complaint is that the book wasn't longer, but I couldn't let that lower my rating. Enjoy!

Within 48 hours of reading this book I had at least 15 bags of junk/trash set out for the garbage man. I highly recommend this book. Very simple and straight to the point.

I've read both of Marie Kondo's books and Sasaki Fumio's 'Goodbye, Things' and out of the three, I enjoyed Nagisa Tatsumi's the best. Those who read it today might find it a bit outdated because it was originally written in the 2000s. If you've read any of the other "minimalist" books, you probably don't need to read another, but if you're deciding between which of the three Japanese minimalist authors to read, I can suggest why you should pick this once since all of them are intended towards different readers. They all more-or-less give similar tips.Tatsumi's book has a sense of humor. One of my favorite lines comes from chapter three where she open "Little girls dream that some day a prince will come along - but that day is never likely to arrive. And before she knows it, the little girl is a middle-aged woman.." (the chapter is about how "sometime" never comes). I enjoyed her humor though I'm sure some probably don't.But another thing helpful about this book is she lists out different organizing situations and then how to solve the problem. They're all quite fun and humorous, too, but if you're not aware of Japanese culture, some of the situations pointed out might not be that clear and some of the examples are dated because it was written in the 2000s.Overall, it's a fun read about how you can declutter, but while there may be a tip or two that's new, if you've read other minimizing books, you probably won't find this book helpful. If you want another take on how to minimize or haven't read any, this book is a good start if you keep in mind when it was written and that the intended audience was likely Japanese housewives or Japanese OLs (office ladies).

This is the book that influenced Marie Kondo but was only recently (2017) translated. It offers much of the same advice as Kondo but the writing is a little more straight forward, less conversational. Its a quick, enjoyable read. The author is a woman so, as a female reader, I can relate to her practicality and organization. In Part 3 titled "how to feel better about getting rid of things," she considers recycling and environmental issues that Kondo doesn't discuss. This is a great companion piece to Kondo's charming and inspiring books. Both authors explain some Japanese concepts (e.g. mottainai, mono no aware) that can give western readers a new perspective on consuming and discarding.

Great book. I loved Mari Kondo's The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, and was very excited to read one of the books that inspired her. I found that The Art of Discarding was a little less extreme than The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, but loved it nonetheless. Great read, especially if you feel the Spring cleaning bug coming on.

This is the book that inspired Marie Kondo to write "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up." I really needed this book. I have too much stuff. I wasn't allowing myself to discard things I don't use or need. My dad was a child of the Great Depression. We were taught that we don't waste things. That's a hard habit to break.This wonderful book gave me the permission I needed to move past that feeling of shame for thinking discarding unneeded items was a terrible waste. I just threw away 400 items. This is just the beginning of my new life. I feel a sense of liberation and I daresay, joy. Bring that dumpster over here!

Excellent book. Doesn't try to be more than it is. Offers a variety of approaches to discarding. And inspires you to get started and keep at it.

You'll learn a lot or you'll be validated, one or the other.I inserted my own little way of thinking into her philosophy , so I tweaked it for my way of living.She conjured up new ideas that I took and ran with. Although I am more sure what I want to keep, this came to me through lots of practice.So it comes natural for me. I like her ideas about sharing. Because that will stifle your good discarding habits if you are always thinking of sharing these things with others. Just get rid of it. Stop making excuses. It's a whole different world now.

Thus book helped give many discussions that can use with my husband to help make minimizing a less arginous and painful task. This will help me to get him onboard. I also like hearing everything doesn't have to be recycled.
