I highly recommend this translation of Dante's Inferno. For many years, Ciardi's translation has been the standard and it has much to recommend it. But Ciardi's rhymed stanzas are looser, wordier, and less faithful to the original than Thornton's blank verse. Thornton brings us closer to what Dante wrote. And the excellent notes at the end of each canto help bring this masterpiece to life for a modern reader.

With decades of study and meticulous craftsmanship, Dr. Peter Thornton has offered his translation of “The Inferno.” I do not know Italian, but I have read a couple of other translations of “The Inferno,” and I found this one the best for several reasons. First, the poetry is vivid. I felt like orange flames and the stench of Sulphur were my companions as much as were Dante and Virgil.The verse itself is a second reason I liked this translation. The meter – iambic pentameter, the ordinary meter of the English language – does not intrude into the poetry itself. That is, I wasn’t conscious of stretching of words or awkward diction for the sake of the meter.You can enjoy the translation without bothering to read the footnotes, but once you start, you are off on another journey, equally absorbing – this one through contemporary (to Dante) Florentine history, Christian metaphors and allusions, Roman legend and mythology, and Catholic scholars from Augustine on.Read the translation; savor the footnotes. There’s always room for a fresh version of hell.

THANK YOU !! I've been trying to expose my kids to more of the classics. But every translation of the Divine Comedy I've come across has been so difficult that I couldn't even get through Hell (felt like hell trying to read it). UNTIL NOW !!! Thank you Mr. Douglas Neff for this translation. It keeps all the flavor, tension, and character; and stays true to the original story. Reading this translation, I find myself more absorbed and engaged in trying to understand what Dante was trying to get across, and why he picked certain persons for certain levels, and doing research into some of the people, places, vices, etc. that he talks about, instead of spending hours trying to decipher the actual language of the translation. My 7 year old is totally engaged, while at the same time, my 15 year old and I are getting into some very interesting discussions (Dante put Pope Celestine V with those souls who neither heaven nor hell want, because he resigned as Pope . . . I wonder what that means for old former pope Benedict XVI / cardinal Ratzinger who just did the same thing). And none of us are getting ground down by having to stop and try and translate the language.I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get this book. You will not be disappointed. I'm now trying to find a comparable translation of Purgatory and Paradise so we can complete the story.

Dante's THE INFERNO is a classic. Written around 1321, the book predates most of the classics, except Homer's works of course. But even before Shakespeare, this book heralded in an uncommonly twisted and almost perverse story of Dante's descent into Hell and his description of everything he sees and those he meets. It's eloquently written. Not necessarily an easy read but it does tribute to the language and reminds the reader that our vernacular has so much more color than the reductio ad absurdum we see being used today. Dante's descriptions of the nightmare that sinners endure at each level is pretty graphic, sometimes bordering on horrifying, and who knows, he might even be credited with the first narrative on the subject of flesh-eating zombies which are so popular today. The narrative also gives the reader a feel for certain historical relevancies of that and earlier times and how Dante saw the world. This particular version of the book, by John Ciardi, provides excellent descriptive notes after each section, clarifying things mentioned in the story so the reader stays on track. Lastly, I could not help but wonder if the Vatican of that time didn't encourage the book to be written simply because of its thematic message of what happens to sinners, particularly those who sin against God and the Church or become apostates. It certainly provides compelling imagery to anyone who believes in Heaven and Hell. Add it to your reading arsenal - it's worth the read.

It's a black and white book with lists of activities. I wish the author talked more about the therapeutic benefits of the activities she suggested and had a glossary so you can look up activities for age or therapeutic benefit. The chapter titles are things like "Things you can do with paper", "things you can do with hose" etc. That helps but this book is a little overwhelming because of no pictures and because you will need to scan through the entire chapter to find appropriate games.

Extraordinary Play is divided into chapters depending upon which materials you have handy. Got mismatched socks? There's plenty of games to enhance children's eye-hand coordination, balance and many other motor skills. Got cardboard boxes--string? paper bag? There are plenty of games for any materials and an appendix in the back telling you which games help which skills. But from a kids point of view, the games are just plain fun. As an occupational therapist who has played these games with kids in many many countries, I can promise you and yours will be grinning!Barbara Sher (author)

About the Author

Joey Rive played on the ATP Tour for 8 years, competing in each of the 4 Grand Slams, and achieved a top 60 player ranking in singles and top 50 ranking in doubles. Rive also played Davis Cup tennis for Puerto Rico and practiced with the U.S. Davis Cup team. Rive has been inducted into the Hall of Fame at Florida State University, where he won MVP honors for his team and conference as a player. He also received Tennis magazine's Sportsman of the Year Award. After his successful playing career, Rive coached at Florida State University, the University of Alabama, and Texas Christian University. He produced multiple All-Americans, two conference titles, and one NCAA final four finish. During his tenure as a college coach, he was voted PTR College Coach of the Year. Rive also spent three years as a USTA national coach, working with Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish, Taylor Dent, Robby Ginepri, and Alex Bogomolov. Rive is a USPTA, PTR, and USTA certified high-performance and sports coach. Currently, he is a teaching professional at T Bar M Racquet Club in Dallas, Texas. For almost three decades, Scott Williams has been an internationally renowned coach working with players such as No. 2 ATP Tour player Tommy Haas and No. 1 ATP Tour doubles player Max Mirnyi. Williams is the author of Serious Tennis (Human Kinetics) and author and producer of the recently released Spiritually Tough Tennis DVD. If there was a tennis course in college, this would definitely be a required textbook. It is an incredible resource for learning the basics of tennis, different drills, and strategies. I highly recommend it for tennis teachers or coaches, or really anyone who wants to learn about tennis. Each chapter includes a different stroke of tennis, and breaks down the different steps/elements of each stroke as well as how to hit different types of shots from that stroke (i.e. forehand--inside out, serve--slice). And there are chapters dedicated to drills which is also really nice. I don't recommend this book for someone who is trying to learn tennis by themselves, though. This is definitely not a "learn-how-to-play tennis kit" (if those even exist). It's just a good resource for teachers, or those who are trying to refresh and review their basic tennis skills.

Solid basic book on getting started.

This is a good tennis book covering a lot of ground, including basic techniques, drills, tactics and strategies. There are some nice real life pictures to illustrate the techniques being discussed. It would have been even more useful if the authors had included more diagrams when explaining the drills/tactics. Overall still a good read and reference book.

Solid book with some excellent info. More visuals would be nice, though.

I really enjoyed this book, and am implementing some of the drills in practice situations. This is a great manual for any coach looking for a little more variety in drills for his/her players.

The pros:This book has a good layout, colorful pictures and is easy to read. It explains many basic points well, like the different grips, stances, swings etc. The title should rather be "Basics of Tennis".Cons:The book is a big failure when it comes to describing drills. The head-hopping continued, and I noticed a few mispronounced words. “Julius,” the male slave, also sounded too much like “Julia,” Marcus’s sister, most of the time. I loved how this one ended, but the last part, where it just told about what happened to the family, should have been worked into story form and not just recounted.

This is the second book in a series and with the teaser at the end of the first book, you can't help but want to read the second. The main characters from the first book are still there (those that survived) and the addition of new characters only serves to give you more characters to care about.Francine Rivers does not follow all the rules of Christian fiction... and in not doing so, her work is fascinating, makes you think about what kind of person you are or could be, and gives you hope.You'll want to forego sleep reading this one.

My pastor loaned the 1st book in this trilogy to me, and after about 20 pages of it, I ordered the remaining 2 books from Amazon. I've never read anything so in depth with how I imagine events actually took place in that era, as well as the emotional upheaval that these characters experienced. I have never been a big fan of Christian fiction, mostly because the characters never seemed real to me. Even the sinners in the books had high moral standards that didn't fit the character. As an example, the pilot and the flight attendant in the first Left Behind book had been involved for months, but had never been intimate. It didn't seem real in the book or the movie. Ms Rivers paints characters with real human feelings, desires, weaknesses as well as strengths. The sinners engage in sinful acts, but without the lurid details of common fiction. There is action, violence and blood in the book that paints the people of Rome as history has shown them to be.

It is a rare find when a sequel is as good as the original, but Francine Rivers has succeeded admirably with her second installment of this trilogy in AN ECHO IN THE DARK. After reading the first one, I knew I had to read on, but never expected this book to be as good. I don't read a lot of fiction, but have a strong feeling there will be many books by this superb writer in my future.God gives us each unique gifts in life, and he gave Francine Rivers the blessed gift of writing. She has recognized her gift and deftly uses it to glorify Christ by witnessing through her stories. I do not believe it is possible to read either of these first books of this trilogy without them strengthening ones faith, or perhaps even altering your life altogether. That's how profound these books truly are.I don't want to give away too much of the story, but readers here will most likely have already the first installment, so I will say that Rivers will make your heart ache for Hadassah's identity to be revealed, only to keep your incessantly turning page after page, mired in anguish and crying out for her precious soul to be rewarded. Throughout this book, as in the first, your emotions will run high as you smile, you cry, you rejoice in the glory of God as others accept His salvation.I anxiously await the third and final installment in this trilogy, as well as exploring other works by this author.
