I bought this for a Homeschool soccer and PE class I lead. It has a good variety of games. Most games are targeted for the 6-14 age range, some are for the older end (think basketball) I loved that the games were built for 2-4 people, so they are games I can play with my 2 boys without having to host an entire co-op class. Gives the fun game ideas homeschoolers often miss out on in a homeschool environment, but is flexible enough that you could teach games to multiple kids in a co-op class.

I got this book yesterday and already I have marked dozens of games that I think my family will enjoy playing together. I was on the fence about books like this but I am glad I got it. It has so many game ideas that I would never have thought of. It's been tougher to think of games for the whole family since we now have teens and toddlers. This book is very helpful. :)

Our homeschool was moving right along, but we are several years in and I still didn't have the phys ed component working. It's really hard to keep two kids interested in it when you are doing basic calesthenics and running, when you're even doing it at all. I was really hoping to find a book that had games in it that could be played with as little as three people and still be active and fun. I found this book on Amazon, crossed my fingers, and ordered. It arrived yesterday and I am so thrilled with it! Almost every page of the book has an activity. They are grouped by the sport that inspired them. And while you can't play a proper game of soccer with only three people, the activities in the book will allow me to start teaching them soccer skills and basic rules for the game, and if they are interested and want to join a team, they won't be playing catch-up. There are sections for all the major sports played in the US, as well as modified playground games (like ones based on tag and four-square). The sections set up to teach based on actual sports are laid out like simple lesson plans with the purpose of the activity, materials needed, number of players, and set-up followed by the how-to directions. The sections on playground games have several activities per page and give a good explanation on how to play. This is not a book to use to teach the effects of and reasons for exercise. If you are looking for worksheets for your kids to fill in about calorie expenditure and major muscle groups, this is not the book. Those books are out there in one form or another, but as far as I can tell, there are no books full of activities for small groups that actually teach sports skills. I'm very, very pleased with this purchase and am spreading the word about it to my fellow homeschoolers.

My 9 and 7-year-olds really enjoy the games presented in this book! We tried out "triple action kickball" last week, and they begged to play it again the next day! A relief to me, as I'm always scrambling to "fit in" P.E.! I got a good workout, too. Another great benefit is that my son in particular bonds with me (his mom/teacher/boss) if I'm playing an active game with him. I find that a good physical game like the ones presented so clearly in this book, really help the rest of the day go more smoothly. Thanks, Guy Bailey! Highly recommended!

this is a great book for homeschoolers who need to learn all these games but who may not have enough to filed a team every day. the game modifications are fun and easy and even mom has a great time!

We are having a great time with this book! The directions are clear and straight-forward and there are even diagrams. The children (ages 6-13) look at the pictures after I read the description and then go have fun.

Very complete guide to PE. There are lots of fun games to enhance the childrens learning skills. The glossary of terms at the end of each chapter help to further educate about each particular sport.

highly recommended for school, homeschool, scouts, etc to want games to play with their kids or just to have fun outside with their families

From the moment the book arrived I could tell this was different from the pushead released art collections... I have some of those signed and numbered collections too - don't get me wrong, I love 'em! But this one has a hard cover, glossy pages, color prints! Titles on the pages, or facing the page if it's a full page print. This has some rarely seen art, glorious!I couldn't be happier with the format or the prints. I only hope the binding holds up to my thumbing through it repeatedly (good thing I got two)!If I could say something critical about this it would only be - make it a bigger format but really I don't care it would just be nice to see a larger format collection of PusHead art!

I really wanted the book for a long time!Thank you so much!!

What can I say....I love Pushead artwork so much but I never had a chance to get his artwork at decent price. Most of them offered at the price that will suggest me to sell my kidney in order to get them :) ...... thus this book was a very good alternative to my passion of his work.If only this book a little more thicker and include some artworks that I've expected to be on the book (e.g. the one on the cover, pregnant lady, bull on skateboard), I would give 'full 5 star rating'. Nevertheless, this compact book is great for viewing, with lots of skeleton illustration on glossy paper, makes it good companion for travelling (to another world) . If you're into heavy metal and love book with plenty of illustration, pick up this book right away......

Pagan in Exile: Book Two of the Pagan Chronicles, by Catherine Jinks

About the Author

Catherine Jinks is a medieval scholar and author of young adult books - a background that is evident in this second of four stories about Pagan Kidrouk. Catherine Jinks’s books have garnered numerous awards, including the prestigious Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year. Pagan grew out of a university course Catherine Jinks took about the Crusades and out of her fascination with the real Order of the Templar. She was also heavily influenced by British comedies like MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL. She did not expect, however, that she would end up writing four books about Templar squire Pagan Kidrouk. "He was such a strong character," she explains, "that he sprang into my head fully formed and wouldn’t go away until I’d worked out his entire life span."Peter de Sève, who created the striking jacket artwork for both PAGAN'S CRUSADE and PAGAN IN EXILE, is a NEW YORKER cartoonist and the designer of animated characters for ICE AGE, the 2002 Academy Award winner for Best Animated Feature Film.

What's everybody staring at? . . .Look at that fellow there, gawking away. Face like a gob of spittle, he's staring at me! Why don't you get yourself a mirror, Spitface, if you really want something to stare at.A one-armed child makes a rude gesture. Runs away as I poke out a viciously threatening tongue. No backbone, little coward."Pagan." Roland's voice is cold and stern. (Doesn't want his squire eroding the dignity of his arrival.) "Please behave yourself.""It's not my fault. What's wrong with them? They don't seem very pleased to see you.""It's been a long time, Pagan. Six years. They may not remember who I am." Six years. Imagine what it must be like, coming home after six years. A quick glance at his profile, jolting along not two arm-lengths away. . . . But there's no expression on Roland's chiseled face. His eyes aren't even misty. Not that I was expecting anything different: you'd see a pig become Pope before you'd ever see Lord Roland Roucy de Bram in tears. He twitches his reins and it's time to turn right. Another narrow little street lined with pale sandstone houses, all sporting those funny peaked roofs. . . .People clustered on doorsteps, staring. They're staring at Roland, too, of course. You have to admit he's worth a look. The golden-haired knight on his glossy black horse with his blue eyes and wide shoulders and white tunic (well, off-white really, I haven't washed it in weeks), and the distinctive red cross on his chest. You don't often see a vision of Saint George wandering past your scrap bucket on an overcast afternoon in the middle of nowhere. It's like watching a stained-glass window come to life. People push and whisper and cross themselves. A sort of hush seems to follow us down the street. This is really embarrassing.PAGAN IN EXILE by Catherine Jinks. Copyright (c) 2004 by Catherine Jinks. This is a child's book. I didn't realize that as I typed in the search box "Adult"......so I will not be reading it! Instead, I will give it to me 8 year old grandson.

What's everybody staring at?   All right, so you've never seen an Arab before. Is that any reason to stare? My hair's not green. My skin's not blue. It might be darker than yours, but dark skin is quite normal in my country. So I'm short. So what? I'm not that short. I'm tall enough to see over my own knees. Anyone would think I had a giant candle-snuffer growing out of my forehead.   Look at that fellow there, gawking away. Face like a gob of spittle, and he's staring at ME. Why don't you get yourself a mirror, Spitface, if you really want something to stare at.   A one-armed child makes a rude gesture. Runs away as I poke out a viciously threatening tongue. No backbone, the little coward.   "Pagan." Roland's voice is cold and stern. (Doesn't want his squire eroding the dignity of his arrival.) "Please behave yourself."The year is 1188 and the infidels have conquered Jeruaslem. Pagan, forced into exile, is accompanying his master, Lord Roland, to the castle of Bram, Roland's home. But the castle, cold, dark and filthy, is not Pagan's idea of how lords live and neither is Roland's family anything like the type of family Pagan imagines someone as noble and dignified as Roland should have.Pagan is soon caught up in violent clashes between both family members and the family and their neighbours. At the heart of the bloody feud stands Esclaramonde, a highly principled woman whose enigmatic character and heretical religious beliefs both disturb and attract Roland, while Pagan himself finds that he too has unpalatable truths to confront.I am absolutely bowled over by Catherine Jinks's writing style. She must have done a huge amount of research before writing the Pagan books to be able to create such a wonderful portrait of mediaeval life in so few words. The excerpt quoted above (which is the beginning of the book) is a good example of prose that literally cries to be read aloud. If you are a secondary-school teacher I urge you to try these books on your class.

Jerusalem has fallen to the soldiers of Saladin. Pagan Kidrouk and his master, Lord Roland Roucy de Bram, are in Lord Roland's homeland seeking knights for a new Crusade to free the holiest of cities from the hands of the infidel. It is hard to know what Lord Roland's squire expected in his master's home in the south of France, but it certainly was not what they find when they arrive.Lord Roland's father, brothers and their families and retainers live in such squalor and have such uncouth manners and ways that Pagan is appalled. How can his almost saintly master come from such a family? It is clearly a waste of time to think that this crowd of unbelieving savages will have any interest in freeing Jerusalem from the clutches of the infidel. Pagan is all for leaving as quickly as possible. He also begins to worry about the effect that Lord Roland's family is having on his master. They are like a disease, corrupting and evil, and Pagan wants to get his master away from their influence as soon as he can. Surely Roland cannot be continuing to hope to "civilize" his family and gain their support for his cause? The situation then becomes very complicated when a local dispute breaks out between Lord Roland's father and the nearby abbey. People are killed and Lord Roland cannot bring himself to leave until he has done his best to find a resolution to the problem. However, the stubbornness of the Abbot and of Lord Roland's father is such that the dispute only escalates.Pagan is the most honest of narrators. His voice is funny and vibrant, and it gives us a vivid picture of his world, which is often dreadfully realistic. His first hunt leaves him sick at heart and in the stomach, and there is no doubt that the living conditions in Lord Roland's childhood home disgust the boy from Jerusalem. The people who live in that home don't impress him either. They are cruel, crude, often barbaric, and have very little respect for anyone outside their family circle. Pagan has such a wonderful sense of the ironic. He sees the things in life that make it pitiful on the one hand, and yet worth living on the other. He also sees the greatness in people, and his love for his master is complete. For Lord Roland, he will risk his life again and again and overcome his greatest fears. By the end of the book it is very hard not to feel great pride for this street boy from Palestine who has such a sharp tongue, quick wit, and big heart.Catherine Jinks has once again given us a book that is difficult to put down, is often deeply disturbing, and leaves one wondering what Pagan and his master will do next. The savagery and often barbarity of the times can be difficult to read about, as well as the hypocrisy of the so-called men of God. There certainly are parallels with our own times, where men kill in the name of religion, failing to see that in so doing, they defile the very faith they profess to follow. Thought-provoking, even tear-jerking, this second book in the Pagan Chronicles series is highly recommended. --- Reviewed by Marya Jansen-Gruber, editor of Through The Looking Glass Children's Book Review ([...]

"Missouri heritage cooking meets the clean flavors of the Pacific Northwest in this improbably delicious mash-up...With generosity and a warm sense of humor, the Sappingtons invite everyone to pull up a chair at their family table—and with recipes like theirs, readers will be more than happy to dig in."—Publishers Weekly "Portland's beloved Country Cat Dinner House and Bar unveils the secrets to their fried chicken, pimento cheese and other comforting dishes in a book geared toward the home cook. Come for the ranch dressing, stay for the guide to whole-animal butchery." —EATER.com “Amid the culinary distractions of Portland—the uni ice cream, the grasshopper sushi—The Country Cat has been focused on the comforting, wholesome dishes of America’s Heartland for nearly a decade. Heartlandia will have you cooking Sappington signatures such as suet-fried chicken, crispy turkey tails, and a morel and spring vegetable hash that transport you to the covered-dish suppers and Friday lake-fish frys of Adam’s rural Missouri upbringing. It’s a wonderful—and delicious—place to be!” —Matt Lee and Ted Lee,authors of The Lee Bros. Charleston Kitchen   “Heartlandia is as inspiring as it is nostalgic . . . fresh, local ingredients and perfectly executed dishes. Adam and Jackie have opened up their hearts and souls to us with the Country Cat, and now with this book everyone’s inner Gramma can become a very slick lady!” —Aaron Franklin, owner of Franklin Barbecue and author of Franklin Barbecue: A Meat-Smoking Manifesto   “Grab this book and wrap it around you like a warm blanket!!!! Adam is the mouthwatering fried chicken and Jackie is the sweet butterscotch pudding in their meal of life! Adam’s respect of the land and its product and his intuitive, comforting cooking is what makes him one of my favorite chefs. I have had the great fortune of cooking in the kitchen with Adam and eating his delicious food and listening to his infectious laugh. I am thrilled to have this book in my kitchen so that I can crack open a page and put a smile on my face —on the cloudiest of days. This book is 3-D deliciousness: I wanted to reach through the pages and grab a crispy end of lamb or a slice of birthday cake! Dive in and start cooking and get those pages dirty!” —Amanda Freitag, chef and Food Network personality   “This book will teach you to bake the fluffiest biscuits and fry a chicken to perfection. You will learn the provenance of seasonal ingredients and may even become an expert at butchering whole hogs. But the real joy of Heartlandia is knowing that Adam and Jackie not only put their souls into cooking at The Country Cat, but now also their hearts into writing Heartlandia.” —Vitaly Paley, chef and owner of Paley’s Place, Imperial, and Portland Penny Diner, and co-author of Paley’s Place Cookbook

I was never in Portland. I have the Portlandia cookbook. I was not aware of the Portland restaurant and culinary scene. But I read the Washington Post, July 1, 2015, story on its Quirky Comfort Food scene. In it they mentioned Le Pigeon, Ataula, Bollywood Theater, Pok Pok, Ox, Langhaan, and more. So I picked up this cookbook.Heartlandia is based on Adam and Jackie Sappington’s Portland restaurant, The Country Cat Dinner House & Bar. Adam, grew up on a Midwest farm and is the Executive Chef; his spouse and business partner Jackie, who mastered her first recipe at the age of ten, is the Executive Pastry Chef.I read in reviews that they are famous for their Skillet-Fried Chicken and the Challah French Toast with Maker’s Mark Custard and Clabber Cream, as well as Bourbon Peach Crumble Pie. The chicken is based on a recipe of their granny Cris who served it to inmates at the old Maries County Jail (note... you can use beef tallow instead of the pig lard) They should be famous for the Chanterelle and Blackberry Succotash; and the Honey Paprika Potatoes (uses salata cheese and honey). The book opens (after a section on tools and techniques, with Breakfast and Buttermilk Biscuits, and Pancakes. The Challah French Toast (includes challah recipe) uses aggs (of course) but also half and half, vanilla extract, bourbon, and cinnamon. The Clabber Cream on it uses heavy cream, confectioners sugar, and sour cream. (what the heck is a “knob” of butter? hehe) For their braiding they teach that Braiding: “2nd crosses over, first divides the rest, repeat”Breakfast continues with Morel and Spring Vegetable Hash; Wedge Salad with Soft Paches Egg and Green Goddess Dressing; Chanterelle, GreenBean, and Freekah Salad with Huckleberry Vinaigrette; Sugar Snap Pea and Soft Goat Cheese Salad with Cornbread Muffins; and more. Their Ranch Dressing (Their Rule: When in doubt, serve Ranch) includes thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, celery seed, lemon pepper, egg yolks, sour cream, and more. In their “Homage to the Range,” they focus on recipes for kettles. Jill's Chili uses ground dark meat turkey, kidney and pinto beans, chicken stock and more than a half a dozen spices. (The secret to deviled eggs...? perhaps it is lime juice and ground celery seed) I skipped their meat candy recipe section (also known as beef jerky). They make their own ketchup for their onion rings and home fries. It uses juniper and allspice berries, star anise, cloves, cinnamon, fennel, cornstarch, ginger, two kinds of vinegar, and of course tomatoes and tomato paste. Adam's Chicken Fried Steak is akin to American Schnitzel. Also his famous “Woo” gravy is just an easier way to say Worcestershire Sauce gravy (but note that it uses bacon fat with coffee, chicken stock, Worcestershire sauce, and more).

Very happy with this book

#36,507 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I happened upon this blog through some other sites I visit often and I saw she was releasing a cookbook. Looked good so I pre-ordered. I didn't stay long on the site but just waited for the book to arrive. Well it did and I've recently vowed to not write a review until I've tried recipes out of the books I'm purchasing. To many times, folks write reviews never sharing the actual recipes and success/failures of actually cooking through a recipe. I'm trying to change that.First, I was blown away by the overall layout and awesome pictures for almost every recipe. Pictures are expensive, so kudos to Kathryne for producing a wonderful book full of what her recipes should look like. I try recipes most often based on pictures so I like lots of pictures. Some other stand outs: Nice intro on how she got interested in whole foods and their importance. And a great explanation of how to use the cookbook. Also, most recipes have a section at the bottom of each sharing how to make it gluten free, dairy free/vegan, egg/nut free and soy free so she's made her recipes very versatile to every kind of eater. Lastly, I appreciate that her ingredient lists use common, basic staples found in supermarkets across America. I haven't come across anything weird, however, if it's slightly unusual she explains where to find or how to substitute for it.Now for the first recipe - Southwestern Roasted Veggie Salad with Chipotle-Balsamic Dressing(pg 64). For starters this recipe will take some time because of the roasted veggies - BUT IT'S WORTH THE TIME --- trust me. I picked a awesome first recipe to try!!!! I did not have red pepper or broccoli. I substituted onions and Brussels sprouts. Roasting took about 30-40 min. Salad: Make sure you roast the pepita (pumpkin seeds) and don't sub these. Also, I wouldn't sub the feta cheese. The combination of these with the dressing it what REALLY makes this salad. Dressing: OMG - this is so very good. Make sure you can get the chipotle in adobo sauce (buy many cans - she uses this in many recipes). It's smoky spicy subtle heat with the hint of sweetness from the maple syrup is perfection. Everything about this salad makes it all work to deliciousness. After I had it for lunch - I made another one to take for lunch. Will make again and again. Can't wait to try the next recipe.UPDATE: 5/26/2017 Banana Pecan Shakes: Who doesn't like shakes for breakfast. I couldn't wait to make this recipe so had it for breakfast instead of dessert. It's very simple to make IF you have a high powered blender i.e. vitamix. (Side Note: every kitchen should have two things - a great food processor and a high powered blender. Invest in these and you won't regret it) My bananas were frozen solid - hence the vitamix and super sweet. Therefore I only use three dates instead of the four called for. Don't forget to roast the pecans and add the scant salt - doing this will really enhance the flavor of the shake. Also, the portion size for this is perfect - about a cup for each serving. Just right for a dessert or in my case breakfast. Can't wait to try this with peanuts and peanut butter.Easiest Honey Whole Wheat Pizza Dough (pg 171): Okay - this is a first for me. I made my own pizza dough and it came together just as Kathryne said. She suggest white whole wheat flour - I used whole wheat flour . It was super easy because the food processor does all the work. Produced two beautiful 12" doughs- I rolled it to about half inch. I can see this being my go to dough and never buying store bought again.Heirloom Tomato Pesto Pizza(pg 167): The pesto recipe for this pizza is delicious. I used fresh basil from my garden. It's easy to put together in the food processor. Once I had the dough rolled, assembling was fairly straight forward. I didn't have heirloom tomatoes but I did use tomatoes grown from my garden :) - And because I LOVE spicy food I added a fresh sliced jalapeño. I think the key to the success of the pizza was cooking it at 500 degrees. The crust was crisp and pizza was cooked through in about 11 min. With the other dough I made a pepperoni pizza for the hubby. He loved it!UPDATE 5/27/2017: Best Ever Guacamole w/ Toasted Pepitas and Chipotle Sauce (pg 111): There are many variations of guacamole out there and your always looking for a way to change it up a bit. Kathryne did just that with this recipe. Her love of pepitas and chipotle are evident again in this recipe and I loved it. This is a basic guacamole recipe with a twist of toasted pepitas (pumpkin seeds) and adobo sauce from the chipotle peppers.Butternut Squash Chipotle Chili (pg 83): Butternut squash is the star in this chili. The onions, bell pepper and black beans take a back seat but really add a nice mouth feel when you take a bite. However, the spices are what make this soup though. I did add one secret ingredient that I thought really brought out the smoky, zing of the "chili" flavor and that was about 2TB of maple syrup. It doesn't make the soup sweet, it just really enhances the flavor all the spice from the adobo and chili powder. Did not make my own chips and of course added the avocado, cilantro and squeeze of lime. Another winner Kathryne!UPDATE 6/3/17: Moroccan Roasted Carrot, Arugula and wild rice salad (pg52): This salad is dynamite!! I sub some things but it really worked: Instead of wild rice, I had left over wheat berries which provided the same chewy texture that the rice would have. I used roasted pumpkin seeds instead of pistachios, feta instead of goat cheese, and dark raisins instead of golden.... all okayed by Kathryne in the recipe. What really makes the recipe pop!!!.... the spice on the carrots (cinnamon and chili powder), the raisins and the dressing!!! It all works together to really make a happy pleasure in your mouth. Since the carrots are the star of this recipe, make sure you buy really high quality organic. I had a pack that was tri-colored that many stores are selling these days. Will make again and again.UPDATE: 7/8/2017 Okay I've owned this book for a little over two month and I'm still loving cooking out of it. I just made the granola this morning and I absolutely love it. I made half by her suggestion and half with my own flair and twists (added coconut and cranberries). Had it on yogurt and right out of the pan. Came together quickly and does get crunchy as it cools... just like Kathryne said. Sending some to a friend.Clearly by all the five star ratings this is a must "whole food" cookbook that anyone should be happy to cook from because the food is so dang delicious and simple to make. Can't wait for book two!

I am not a vegetarian -- but I absolutely love Kathryne's recipes. Prior to being a blog fan of Cookie and Kate, meat was central to most of my meals and veggies were an after thought. Now, I am happy to report, she was a cornerstone of how I changed my eating habits and vegetables have become a main focus of my meals. Her recipes are thorough and she always provides alternate substitutions to accommodate different diets -- my son is allergic to tree nuts so this is especially helpful. And I know she's tested the alternate recipe -- it's not an afterthought because they work and taste delicious.Looking at her cookbook I see she has provided even more details, including how to make seasonal changes and I love that there's a picture for each recipe. You eat with your eyes first! You'll love this cookbook, visually and as a cook. But if you are still unsure about the book, check out her Healthy Apple Muffins or her Veggie Black Bean Enchiladas on her Cookie and Kate blog as test recipes. Those are favorites of my kiddos so I have no hesitation in recommending them.UPDATE: I've had this cookbook for almost a month now and I've made about 10 recipes from the book and I'm happy to report they have all been crowd pleasing meals! The instructions are incredibly easy to follow and includes advance steps, noting things like, you'll want to measure these ingredients before you begin because the recipe comes together fast. I also love how Kate tells you approximately how much of an ingredient to buy instead of just listing 1 cup. The helpful cooking techniques were also nice. I felt a bit sheepish to learn my tomato based sauces were eating away at my newly seasoned cast iron pan. Doh!Photos are a few of the recipes I've made. All of them were delicious -- which is not the case for some cookbooks. This cookbook is not a one recipe and done cookbook. Don't you hate those? I am still making recipes from this cookbook so I feel it's really worth the price.Again, don't hesitate to get this cookbook. The recipes are really well developed, easy to follow, and most importantly, wonderful to eat!

I absolutely love this cookbook! I've been a huge fan of the Cookie and Kate blog for a couple of years, and it was like Christmas morning when my pre-ordered copy arrived. The book stays true to everything I love about the blog: delicious, unique recipes that are attainable and so carefully perfected. I've made about 10 of the recipes so far, and every single one has been outrageous. As a vegetarian with a non-vegetarian husband and 19-month-old daughter, the true test for me are meals that are hearty, healthy and satisfy all of us, and all of the recipes from the book have checked every box. Not to mention that my own furry kitchen companion has loved any scraps she's been able to get her paws on. Whether you're vegetarian or not, get this cookbook...in the few weeks I've had it, I've used and enjoyed it more than any of the 15+ vegetarian cookbooks I have on my shelf. Can't wait for the sequel!

I originally got this as a Christmas present for my sister, then I got it in the mail and tried a couple of the recipes for myself. Let's just say that now this is my new favorite book and she really liked the pajamas that I got her. ;-) I am not a vegetarian but I do eat a lot of dishes that are made with healthy and real foods, and try to only have one dish ( or none) that contains meat. My meat and potatoes husband even loves these recipes - which is good because he is also diabetic with heart issues and is supposed to eat foods with a high nutritional value, lots of veggies, and complex carbs/ whole grains. I would recommend this book to everyone who loves eating tasty, nutritious food made with real ingredients. Well done :-)

The Truth of Our Faith: On the Christian Mysteries (Foundations in Orthodoxy)

The inner life of the Church, where man becomes "god by grace" (St. Athanasios the Great) through the reception of the Divine Energies or Grace of God, is centered on the Holy Mysteries. In this volume, Elder Cleopa explains the origins, meaning and purpose of the Holy Mysteries of Baptism, Chrismation, Communion, Confession, the Priesthood, Marriage, and Holy Unction, while also deconstructing the errors of those who missunderstand or reject this life in Christ. Squarely based, as always, on Holy Scripture and its interpretation by the Holy Fathers of every age, Elder Cleopa brings to light neglected knowledge and rejected counsel stored up for so many centuries in the Orthodox Church - insights that could have helped avoid the disintegration of the Western church, and which may still aid in its restoration even today.

One thing I enjoy about reading books by Orthodox Elders is that there is often a simplicity about their words, not a simple-mindedness, but a directness and brevity that blow like a cool breeze into the heart. The Holy Elders tend not to mince words and the result is closer to poetry than prose. Elder Cleopa's book is not particularly poetic (hence 4 instead of 5 stars), but it does have the fragrance of fresh directness and brevity-simplicity. Elder Cleopa is part of what Bishop Kallistos Ware calls the spiritual apostolic succession and St. Symeon the New Theologian calls "the Golden Chain." Elder Cleopa was tonsured into monastic life at 17, persecuted by the Romanian Communist regime, and was, for most of his life, known throughout Romania as a Spiritual Elder (Russian staretz, Greek geronta). Before Elder Cleopa's text, there are two prologues and an introduction. I urge you to read these. The second prologue is a delightful and spiritually refreshing biography of Elder Cleopa, a reminder that there are indeed Saints in our own times (Elder Cleopa reposed in 1998). The meat of the book is 19 chapters on basic tenets of Christian Orthodoxy (as the subtitle indicates). These range from "On the Church," and "On the Veneration of Saints and Angels," to "On the Second Coming of Christ," and "On Magic and Occultism." Each chapter is a dialogue between Elder Cleopa and an anonymous "Inquirer." Often times the Inquirer's question or argument is obviously outside of Orthodox belief, however, the Blessed Elder gives patient answers to each question. This question-and-answer is not a Socratic dialogue where the Inquirer led along to discover the Truth for himself. There is no confusion that Elder Cleopa is the "father" and the Inquirer the "child." What makes this book so wonderful is that the dialogues are entirely within the context of Holy Scripture. Elder Cleopa defends Orthodoxy by referring to the Old and New Testaments. This is not to marginalize Holy Tradition, but, due to the emphasis given Scripture by his Inquirer, (and often those who inquire of us at work, at home, or anywhere), the Elder answers from that same emphasis. Hence, this book could be a kind of Biblical concordance on Orthodox belief with extensive commentary. However, Elder Cleopa's gentle tone keeps the discourses from being dry academic exercises. For anyone wondering about the scriptural basis/reference for some part of Orthodoxy this is a splendid book. The Truth of Our Faith is not only an enlightening book for the Scripturally weak (myself included), it is also a good way to better equip oneself to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. This is a book I would recommend to a biblically minded Protestant who was looking into Orthodoxy or an Orthodox reader wanting to be better acquainted with his or her faith.

Very good info. And answered many questions about the Orthodox faith. I appreciate the fact that I can find so many "good" Orthodox books online.

Wonderfully footnoted with excellent biblical references.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to have a discourse from Holy Scripture on the Teachings of True Christianity. It's a Q & A book, where the Elder gives his wise answers to the "tricky" questions about the faith of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Each answer is supported by a few Bible verses. The Table of ContentsTranslators IntroductionPreface by Archimandrite Joseph of Xeropotamou Monastery (Mount Athos)A word about the Elder in the Orthodox ChurchA Brief Life of the Elder Cleopa of RomaniaIntroduction by the Elder1. "The Truth of Our Faith" by Elder Cleopa of Romania is an excellent Q&A between Elder Cleopa and inquirers about the Orthodox faith. In addition to the preface and a brief prologue about Elder Cleopa's life, there is an introduction by Elder Cleopa himself about his goals for the book. The main part of the book is broken down into 19 sections/chapters on different topics. It covers some of the Orthodox Church's teachings on the Virgin Mary and the Church's use of icons. The Elder also answers questions about fasting, the Second Coming, and speaking in tongues. The Elder's tone is warm and simple, although he speaks unequivocally on issues in today's world of relativsm. His in depth knowledge of the Bible is awe-inspiring and there are tons of references (thankfully the footnotes aren't done in an academic fashion that is distracting.)This is an excellent place for those that know something about Orthodoxy to probe deeper. Even though its not an ideal place for one to start reading about Orthodoxy...it would still be readily understood by one that knows virtually nothing of the Christian East. (The ideal place to learn about Orthodoxy is an Orthodox Church.) People that enjoyed St. Theophan the Recluse's "The Spiritual Life and How to be Attuned to It" or his "Path to Salvation" or Elder Joseph the Hesychast's "Monastic Wisdom" should enjoy this as it is in similar format. Not only that all these works share the fact that they were written out of love for the world by very holy men. Overall...highly recommended.
