It was a very helpful book for me when my mother lived with me.

I appreciate the good content in this book, but it is frustrating to read as there is no table of contents. The Vulnerability Index looks like it would be very helpful, but it is in such tiny print that I can't read it, and I can't make the font bigger. I am currently trying to figure out how to print it.If Amazon fixes these problems I'd be happy to review the book on its content. Until then, my suggestion is to get the print copy.

The book was very helpful to my wife as she tries to care for her parents. She would recommend it for anyone dealing with the challenges of caring for aging parents.

I enjoyed this book as it is so practical. If relates real life case histories which are down-to-earth. These are true and so easy to relate to. Actually, there is an outstanding Table of Contents, clearly outlined in the print version, noting a previous review comment. I found that the Geriatrician's point of view presented after each case study was so practical. One can tell that Dr. Gordon does have extensive experience in geriatrics, as one of the pioneers in this field in North America. The reader will be able to identify with some of the topics presented such as travel for the elderly, culture clash, who is the rightful decision-maker, sexuality late in life, dealing with dementia in the family,This is not a formal academic publication, but is a practical every day guide for all family members who are blessed to have living mature parents. There are challenges when parents could lay on the guilt trip, when there may be value gaps between generations, and a chapter on when love and the law collide. Good advice is provided in coping with the stress of the aging parent, in communication with the social worker, and in directing caring children to resource use in the community.At the end of the day, we want the best for our parents. This guide on straight talk about aging in the family may help us achieve that end, perhaps understand what and why we are making decisions, while providing useful information on conditions which are common and characteristic in the elderly. This is an essentail for the library of any behavior analyst, filled with hugely important information, however you need an attention span of steel and a translator to trudge through it. Obviously we have to have it on our shelves, but I recommend a companion text to go along with VB if you plan on understanding any of it.

Skinner has a questionable reputation as a result of fabricating his infamous Skinner's box, but this book is much more mainstream and useful. Recommended

This book is important if you are in an ABA program, but it is not easy to read. I often reread paragraphs and use other books and articles to supplement it and explain it in layman's terms. Skinner did not write it for a person that is not in the field of Behavioral psychology to pick up easily.

I return to this book off and on. (I wish I can study this book with someone who has mastered this material.) The only epiphany I have had in my life is/was when I read Chapter 2 of this book about two decades ago (and understood that Skinner was analyzing language utterances as law of effect conditioned behavior).Simply a brilliant book. Most underrated,as people have pointed out.I just reread Chapter 1. It only has 12 pages. However, the brilliance can clearly be seen. As is the difficulty. There are about 12 sentences (in these 12 pages) that I do not understand almost completely. (For instance, the one about speaker also being a listener.)Added on 6/12/2004------------------I happened to come across Chomsky's critique of Verbal Behavior online and started studying it closely, especially Section 3. I noticed several misunderstandings almost right away and started answering them, in a writeup. (I will post the details on these later.) On a lark, I sent a copy of this to Noam Chomsky, not expecting to receive a reply. I was surprised to get a reply. We exchanged several e-mails. However, Chomsky stubbornly refused to see my points. His answers were mostly non-sequiturs. Are may points valid? You be the judge when I get around to posting my two specific points. In the meantime, you may want to look at[...]Added on 12/25/2011-------------------I am rereading this book and the following thought occurred to me: In this book, Skinner proposes a whole new scheme for understanding language behavior, which effectively pushes aside centuries of traditional views. (If he is right, this is a major step forward. And I have no doubt that he is right.) Has this ever been done before? Did Darwin do it in his The Origin of Species? (This is not a trick question. I have not read it carefully.) I am trying to understand the hostility of people like Chomsky to this book, why they didn't give it the chance it richly deserves. I wonder whether the following is the more common scenario: somebody proposes a breakthrough idea or two, some people who buy into these start promoting these, and so on. Skinner is not diffident at all. (Darwin was. He held his book for a long time. Gould theorized that this was because Darwin's livelihood was from the church. Fortunately, Skinner's livelihood was NOT from prior incarnations of cognitive psychology :-)) When he started his PhD, he wrote to his parents that, if necessary, he was going to change the field to suit himself (or something like this). And this is what he did. I am wondering whether this one person pushing for all these major changes unabashedly is the reason for Chomsky's hostility. Chomsky has written that Skinner has no right define how psychology should be done.

It's Skinner. Tough to read sometimes, even for a seasoned behavior analyst, but if you're looking for the science of verbal behavior explained by the master, this is the "bible".

Been away from collecting and reading Spider-Man for a few years. Stopped after a few years of Miles Morales storyline, which i liked a lot. Heard about the Spider-verse from the upcoming movie and picked this book to get me started. I am not disappointed! Parker as a tech mogul doesn't seem the most natural fit, but it's growing on me, and the rest of the storyline is great! Looking forward to reading more!

Jump around a bit more than I liked. Didn't know it is more or less a compilation.

I'll be quick and honest, I am a long time spider!an fan, even liking the superior a lot. This was a good start in a familiar direction but it was full of a lot of filler pieces that took me out of the main narrative which I was not expecting. But after that whole part the rest of the volume was great definitely recommend for fans or minor newcomers.

Arrived damaged, it looked like someone used it as a writing pad.

My nephew really enjoyed it.

Introducing the next generation, my son and daughter, to the Spiderman Universe.

Both the Negative Trait and Positive Trait Thesauri are amazing. Probably one of the most useful writing resources I've ever purchased. I bought the Negative Trait one ages ago and then avoided it because it seemed like a lot of work to consider your characters this way. Then I bought the PT one and started working. It is a bit of hard work. But completely worth it. Once you know who your characters are, you can create scenes that are directed by their instincts and behavior and not just write a bunch of random stuff happening to them. How can you challenge a character that you don't understand?These books saved my current WIP, which ground to a halt recently when I ran out of horrible random things to do to my characters. Now that I've read and used these books, I can let my characters screw things up on their own and if I need to come up with external torture for them, I now understand what will thoroughly wreck their day :)I am so impressed with these books. I highly recommend them if you're a writer and you're willing to do the work to make your characters three-dimensional and engaging.

The Negative Trait Thesaurus talks about using traits to deepen your characterization to help your reader become emotionally invested in them. They use a similar format as the Emotion Thesaurus by defining the characteristic, listing similar attributes, possible causes and associated behaviors. I haven’t used these as thoroughly as I should, mostly because when I bought them I was in the middle of writing something I’d already developed characters for, but I’m in the beginning of a new project and I intend to make full use of it.

I'm writing the same review for the book 'positive trait thesaurus' and 'negative trait thesaurus' as they are equal in quality and usefulness:I don't believe there is any reason to write anything more until you have purchased these books!Unless you have a masters in psychology maybe you won't need them. Even so, I believe it would be a good quick reference.These books hand writers the tools they need to understand the complex nature of their characters psychology.These books will give you a clear cause and effect to every personality trait your character has, giving you a more indepth understanding of your own character, which will in turn give your reader a more in depth understanding of your character and be more involved in your story.Unless you enjoy torturing yourself and making life harder on yourself:A must have.

If you want your readers to interact with the characters in yourstories, or writings,they must feel like real people, good or bad.Because, a reader wants to cheer for,or boo at the people, youwant them to spend their time with.If a reader can not relate to your protagonist, or even your antagonistfor that matter, they will wonder, why are they even bothering finishingyour story.Harsh?Yes it is, but it is your job, to make characters as real as possible, byshowing, not listing, what makes them what and who they are.Good guys and bad guys, all have traits that make them take the road thatthey travel.Show those traits to your readers.

They tell you why negative traits, wounds and flaws are essential for character arcs, how to build them, and how they can be fit to make the journey harder and more meaningful. They also cover that people who are wounded form lies they believe (Ex. I'll never be a good mother.), which stems from one of the five basic needs. (Sorry, too long to list.)The second part lists flaws alphabetically. They cover definition, similar flaws, possible causes, associated behaviors and attitudes, associated thoughts, associated emotions, positive aspects, negative aspects, examples from film, overcoming this trait as a major flaw, and traits in supporting characters that may cause conflict. I read through each flaw and was surprised when my characters became fleshed out in my head. I knew what they were thinking and what caused it.We can all think of various flaws we want our characters to have (selfish, stubborn, reckless, etc.), but it is invaluable to have ALL the flaws listed out, so you can find the one your brain forgot, under that pile bills and junk mail, that adds the critical pulse to your character and brings your story to life.You might even find yourself identifying with flaws and eagerly turning to 'Overcoming this trait as a major Flaw'. It's like a mini therapy session. Acknowledge and correct.All in all, this book is worthy of a spot on your shelf, if just for having a complete list of flaws at your fingertips. I also highly recommend their other two books: The Emotion Thesaurus and The Positive Trait Thesaurus.

Angela Ackerman's experience as a counselor in psychotherapy really comes through. She gives a wide range of personality examples that will fit with most circumstances. I had never read anything in the steampunk genre before, and was skeptical about buying the book until I saw Laura A. Grace rave about it on her YouTube channel. I'm glad to say that taking a chance on The Electrical Menagerie was one of the best bookish decisions I've made, as the book has charmed its way onto my all-time favorites list! <3What I Loved:The Characters: From the first page, the author had me rooting for Carthage, and I honestly don't know if I've ever related this much to a forty-something male character before. Carthage is a dreamer who stops at nothing, and I mean nothing to accomplish his goals. His attitude was a huge inspiration at this point in my life. And then, as if Carthage himself isn't already fantastic, we have Huxley as the perfect sidekick and comic relief figure. These two together are simply phenomenal!The World Building: I'm totally jealous of the author's world building skills! Readers are immediately painted a vivid picture of the Celestial Isles and their quirky qualities. I felt like I was tagging along with Carthage and Huxley during every step of their journey and was seeing everything as clearly as they were.Descriptions: The exquisite world building is due in part to the author's unmatched ability to write killer, spot-on descriptions. Not only were they vivid, but they were delicious to read!The Mystery Element: Though Laura may have mentioned it in her video review, gong in I had forgotten there was a mystery element. Oh my gracious y'all, that thing kept me invested beyond belief, especially when the main characters got caught up in the action.I daresay that this author's storytelling skills are better than 75% of the famous traditionally published authors I've read. Obviously, I'm granting The Electrical Menagerie 5/5 stars. Thank you to the author for penning such an enchanting tale! I can't wait for the rest of the Celestial Isles series to release!

I was so excited when this book released on audiobook! It has been on my TBR for a while, but I don't have a lot of time to sit down and read books these days. So when it became available on audiobook, I immediately purchased it and started listening a few days later.The narrator did a really good job. At first I wasn't sure if I was going to like him, but then I got used to his voice and couldn't stop listening.After hearing so much about this book and so much fangirling, I went into this book kind of cautiously, afraid it wouldn't live up to the hype.The beginning starts fairly slow and mild. It focuses on a steampunk/electrical circus show that is on the brink of disaster. They enter a contest as a last ditch effort to save their show.The contest part of the book was interesting. A lot of set up and build up and some mysteries and dangers. But it wasn't until about halfway through the book when it really took off for me and things really became heart pounding.The steampunk/electrical invention part of the book was my favorite. It was so inventive and fun, and that was where the real wonder of the book came from.I liked how this book could function as a standalone. The main storyline is wrapped up, so don't hold off on reading this book because you don't want a cliffhanger ending.I enjoyed this book and I'm really excited to see what the author has for other books in this series!

The Electrical Menagerie is perplexingly difficult to describe. It mixes fantasy and science fiction with heavy early-1900s, steampunk vibes and a good dash of wonder. The story takes place in a world unlike any I’ve ever encountered, either on the page or on screen: A “world” made of landmasses floating in the sky, circled by stars. I loved the subtle ways this impacted the characters’ ways of thinking, such as referring to the sun as the “Principle Star.”In this world, electricity and mechanics take on an almost-magical quality; robots have personalities and can do fascinating things. This, combined with the two protagonists, breathed wonder across the page.The protagonists are refreshing and lovable: Sylvester Carthage, a middle-aged man with a childlike perspective and remarkable talent for invention, and Arbrook Huxley, a clever, world-wise twenty-something with something to prove to his family and himself. Their partnership-turned-friendship was the heart and soul of this book. I’m confident that I will read any further works in this series simply because of the amazing character dynamics. On top of that, both Carthage and Huxley grew in believable, character-consistent ways throughout the story and were the driving forces in the plot.It’s rare to find a book that appeals to both my inner child, searching for imagination and creativity and literary friends, and my inner author, searching for well-written stories with dynamic characters and compelling plots. The Electrical Menagerie did both masterfully, and is now near the top of my personal “Recommend to All the People” book list.
