James C. Chatters, PH.D., is an archaeologist and paleoecologist who has dedicated his life to understanding the human and environmental prehistory of North America. He is currently a principal scientist with Foster Wheeler Environmental Corporation, an adjunct associate professor of research at Central Washington University, and a deputy coroner for Benton County, Washington. He formerly taught at the University of Washington and served as senior research scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. He now lives in Bothell, Washington.

Ancient Encounters is one of the best books I have read on the subject of who were the first humans in North America. The author, Dr. James Chatters, provides in depth research which dispels myths about the first humans in NA. Still lots of questions to be answered but Chatters provides a compelling and fascinating set of archaeological data. This is an excellent read and I highly recommend Ancient Encounters to anyone who is interested in finding out who were the first Americans and where did they originate.

This book is a very readable book presented first hand and as such the reader feels the enthusiasm, frustration, effort, and triumph of a fine piece of work. I enjoyed this very much even though I had already read the apparently "official version" blessed by the Corps of Engineers. I am glad to have read both books and enjoyed them both. However, if some one is not up to reading both books, I recommend Chatters' Ancient Encounters over the committee version. It is more fun.A previous reviewer contrasted this (Chatters) to the "coffee table version" edited by Owlsley saying the Owlsley version was a whitewash of the US Army Corp of Engineers' very deceptive and underhanded behavior. I read the Owlsley version first and was puzzled because the criticism of the USACE is quite strong. However the Chatters version is a first hand account and his personal frustration is apparent and probably offers a better description of the politics involved.

First hand account of this much discussed find and the political fallout with the possession rights. It expresses the very personal viewpoint of the author who was a primary person in the discovery. The first 5 Chapters read like a Michael Crichton novel, really pulling you in and hard to put down. This goes well with the more definitive book later published by TAMU that includes reports of all the studies.

This $12 book is the one you should buy and read. The big-time $70 story of this event is rampant with political favoritism and this $12 book is simply the truth well told. Chatters has done all mankind a great service by scientifically studying and protecting this unique find. Our government has once again almost ruined it by taking the control away from him and allowing the Corp of Engineers to play political games with the most unique of all American finds. Buy and read this book to really understand how and why these remains are so important to all of us. If you prefer to look smart rather than be smart, buy the big $70 book and place it on your coffee table to impress.I have both and prefer this one.

The discovery of the remains of the Kennewick man on the shores of the Columbia River in the Tri-City area of Washington State was truely a spectacular discovery.This man was not related to any of the present aboriginal tribes, and it was very important that Mr. Chatters, true to his profession, followed through with his research.It is important to all of us that the correct answers to the question, who, where, and when the early settlers came to this continent, can be determined.For the local aboriginal tribes wanting to bury the remains of Kennewick man, without a proper detemination, is absurd.One reason is that perhaps the Kennewick man is part of a much bigger discovery. Or perhaps his real tribe moved on to California, or Texas. Keep in mind, this man came from somewhere, perhaps somewhere along the Columbia River in Canada. Maybe along the Pacific Ocean at the mouth of the river.The federal laws that govern these discoveries must take in to account the scientific requirements for all of us, not for just a few.This book was well written and covered the situation well, and most importantly, the value of the discovery of the Kennewick man was so important that we now know more about the first peoples long gone, at least in this part Washington State.

What a great read, I couldn't put this book down either. Since this book was written, Doug Owsley of the Smithsonian, finally had the opportunity to study Kennewick Man and his findings are fascinating. This book is a wonderful introduction to Kennewick Man and migrations of early humans into the Americas. My test of a good book is if it makes me want to learn/read more about the subject and this one sure does.

This is one of the two best books on Kennewick Man. James Chatters makes this real life story an adventure in reading and a real page turner.....when he is called to see and recover, and identify a skull and then full skeleton from the river in Kennewick Washington. The skull had an eliptical/oval shape from the top, and a large nose, and chin that projected....but also had teeth ground down nearly to the gums. So the teeth and coloring of the skull was much like "early man" but the skull shape, nose, chin, etc were that of a different group. Eventually after court battles, and much bitterness between local Indian tribes, the entire skeleton changed hands several times. Carbon14 tests put the age of the skeleton at about 8,000 years plus, and there was an ancient flint dart point embedded in the hip of this early man, indicating both it's age and the bitter times he lived in. Evidently the man had been attacked by some other men and taken an atlatl spear to the hip, which eventually healed over.I highly recommend this book, and have bought both the paperback and hardback copy for my library.

I have been interested in Kennewick Man and other 10,000 year old human remains since their discovery. This book details the importance of these findings and what they suggest about human occupation of the New World. Shed light on contemporary problems with Native American religious beliefs that thwart scientific efforts to learn about our predecessors. Well written an informative book that raises interesting and as yet unanswered questions about where these people with Caucasoid skull shapes came from.

Very well written book that is approachable to non-scientists even as it discusses such complex topics as evolutionary biology and paleoanthropology. The author raises very interesting points about the potential for evolutionary change as a result of modern technology varying from C sections and IVF to the rise of online dating. As genome mapping and analysis continue to progress, it should provide for further topics that I hope Mr. Solomon will explore in future books. Recommended for non-scientists and scientists alike.

A but dry at times but thoughtful and informative.

I thoroughly enjoyed Future Humans. It's science, well annotated and attributed, yet it's not so academic to be out of reach. The author freely introduces terms you won't use in daily life (unless maybe you are an evolutionary biologist) but I never felt bog down or turned off by terminology. I learned a lot about how DNA really works and especially found interesting the sections on bacteria and diseases. And, this is not a tome; I was able to read it in a few sittings.

This book is beautifully written and brilliantly executed. Solomon's sense of story, the way he weaves the personal into the scholarly, and his ability to depict the discovery process as an enthralling narrative all do a great service for science.

not a bad book to read..but neither has anything new..Microbiome (Blaser), Evolutionary process (Jared Diamond)...DNA mutations etc...are mentioned from other expertises as well..it is a good book for beginners to learn about ourselves...interesting questions that the author has raised: where are we heading? mutation? planetary colonization>>mutations? volcanic disruptions and meteors that kill off humans?

I loved this book. My major complaint is that it is too short. It’s not that author Scott Solomon didn’t include enough information. He covered the subject of how humans have and will continue to evolve thoroughly. It’s not that his discussions were sketchy. They weren’t – Solomon used enough detail that I could follow everything he wrote. The book was too short because Solomon writes so clearly and pleasantly, I wanted the book to go on. He incorporates enough science to be clear but not too much that the book becomes ponderous. He uses personal anecdotes and writes with a good sense of humor. However Solomon does not describe what the future human will be like. He discusses ways that we could evolve and the factors involved in our evolution, but actually describing what we will evolve into is best left to science fiction writers. I strongly recommend this book.Disclosure: I received this book free via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

There's a bit too much "scientific" jargon in this book. Great figures, just too much jargon. I've read other remote sensing books, and they are read better.

It's a fine book, but for a text on the subject it's a bit outdated. Scant information on LiDAR, or the newest sensors.

This is a great resource for any GIS practitioner. It's well written and informative.

Aptly titled! I kept humming and singing the hymn in between readings. This book was certainly lighter than the other books in the series. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it! It reminded me of just how sweet God is and how He takes care of His own. *insert heart* It was very well-written with few grammatical errors. Now, what's up with Angie?And whatever happened with Sophia and Derek? Tink and James?

Is this book just for me? Well, it seems that way. I saw pieces of me in several of the main characters, and it reminded me of how far the Lord brought me. So grateful for Sis. Lashonda! She is truly gifted in writing stories that bring forth hope and enlightenment. Enjoy this read, I surely did!

I enjoyed the lightness in this book, but most importantly God being the central theme. I liked that Deandre was consistent in her faith. That was encouraging. Sometimes the constant negativity can be off putting. Thank you for a wonderful book. Looking forward to Angie’s story.

When DC Comics's Justice League of America repopularized super-heroes, Marvel inaugurated its famous line of superhero comics, starting with The Fantastic Four in 1961. Daniels ( Living in Fear: The History of Horror in the Mass Media ) lays to rest the myth that Marvel publisher Lee (whose introduction is written in hyperbolic, adjective- and alliteration-laden prose) was the sole creator of those 1960s superheroes, which was Marvel's position until others in the field pushed to give proper credit to the artists who worked with Lee, especially Jack Kirby. Fifty years as a comic book company is quite an accomplishment, but only when a certain level of growth can be demonstrated. Unfortunately, this book is 287 pages of stagnation. Marvel's formative years prove interesting and nostalgic, but 50 years later the company is still cranking out comics "the Marvel Way." This work falls short in its reference function of detailing Marvel's recent years due to the glutinous mass of material that would have to be collated--it would require a volume all its own. One of my favorite books as a kid, this has everything an 80s kid remembers fondly from Marvel, plus a gorgeously illustrated and curated history. I've given a few as gifts, they're great for any 9 to 90 year old boy.

I bought this book as a gift for my husband. Not only did it arrive in just a few short days, it was perfectly packaged. The item couldn't have been handled with more care and when it arrived my husband was so excited. We love the book and would definitely order again in the future. Thank you!

Covers the beginning of the company through Marvel Age and into the late 1980's. Lots of great pictures and behind the scenes photos and information. A very interesting read!

Marvel: Five Fabulous Decades of the World’s Greatest Comics is the most enjoyable comics-related history I’ve read thus far — but it’s not the best one. As with his similar volume on DC Comics (see Reaction Paper #5), historian Les Daniels’ fails to make clear where his allegiance lies: with unbiased history or corporate approval. Without making his intent clear, Daniels makes suspect the truth and fairness of this detail-rich account of Marvel’s history. Such suspicions are most glaring when controversies that have been well documented in other sources are mentioned only in passing, glossed over, or ignored altogether. For example, Jack Kirby’s departure from the company in 1970 — which some comic-book historians point to as one of the initiating events of the Bronze Age — receives only a page and a few polite comments from Kirby and Stan Lee (p. 145); Daniels account captures little of the acrimony other sources have suggested led to the split. The author also doesn’t discuss Kirby’s return to the company in the mid-1970s, subsequent re-departure, or extended, bitter battle with the company over original art; that last item generated many headlines in the industry trade press throughout the 1980s.A second example of potential whitewashing of controversy can be seen in Daniels material regarding Jim Shooter, Marvel’s editor-in-chief from 1978 to 1987. While acknowledging that Shooter “may have stepped on a few toes,” the author largely casts the former E-i-C as someone who was both business savvy and a friend of the creative talent (p. 206). Daniels writes: “He was concerned about conditions for artists and writers and he was convinced that making some changes would ultimately increase sales” (p. 183). Shooter himself is quoted talking about significantly increasing page rates, extending medical coverage and establishing incentive programs (p. 183). While all of this is most likely true, it is also common knowledge that many creators do not fondly recall Shooter’s tenure. Daniels does note that long-time Marvel writer and former E-i-C Roy Thomas left the company over a disagreement with Shooter (p. 185). But it’s a fairly well known fact that Thomas wasn’t alone, and that many of these old wounds remain. (I’ve personally witnessed this: At a Comic-Con International panel last summer, Bronze-era talent including Doug Moench, Gene Colan and Marv Wolfman all talked of leaving Marvel to escape Shooter — who they referred to as “he who shall not be named.”)It’s a shame that the intent of Daniels history is suspect, because the book, on a whole is an entertaining and informative read. The author clearly has access to primary sources, and the company-specific scope gives unique facts and angles room to breathe. A few examples relevant to the Bronze Age:• The importance of the “Kree-Skrull War,” a 1971-72 Avengers storyline that “demonstrated that plot lines could be extended almost indefinitely” and “solidified the idea that every comic book Marvel had ever published was part of an endless, ongoing saga” (p. 150).• There was a “conscious effort” to increase the number of minority and female superheroes (p. 158).• The great impact of art director John Romita, who provided many uncredited cover layouts and character designs, including initial designs for the Punisher, Ms. Marvel and Wolverine (pp. 161-63, 166, 172).Such nuggets of information are gold to the comics historian. With the addition of a simple statement of intent and description of methods, Daniels book would have been invaluable.

Marvel Five Fabulous Decades of the World's Greatest Comics is a well-presented but incomplete volume that I would highly recommend for those interested in the history of pulp fiction and comic books, especially Marvel Comics.It is a brilliant summary of a large portion of the genres, formats, and marketing strategies of Marvel Comics, which dates back to the 1930s and 1940s. Even a reader who is not particularly a comics fan will likely find this book fascinating and enlightening.To me, this publication is a decent effort to document the history and development of the superhero fantasy. Introduced in this publication are highlighted stories and photographed covers of the various pulp fiction magazines, including Marvel Tales, The Spider, Weird Tales, etc., all of which were prevalent in American dime stores and contained various tales about time travel, unlimited atomic energy, ghosts, and alien invaders. Though these fantasies were popular, the pulp novel editors, most notably Martin Goodman, eventually needed to find a way to publish their stories at a pace in sync with an accelerating, thus increasingly demanding, society that was producing faster machines, trains, planes, and automobiles.Thus was developed and introduced by Goodman, along with illustrator, Bill Everett, what would be the very first issue of Marvel Comics, which has its cover photographed in miniaturized form as displayed in this book. So according to the following pages, the cornerstone of Marvel Comics was laid, and there was to be no turning back.In Five Fabulous Decades, each page is glossy and contains several photographs in color of the various aforementioned pulp fiction works along with the very early issues that would lead to an expanding Marvel Universe. It is also stated that contrary to what many comic book history writers have informed their respective readers, the creation of the comic book itself did not immediately replace and eradicate the pulp fiction magazine, because pulps continued to be printed well into 1955.All in all, Marvel did a good chapter-by-chapter sequence, bringing forth names of the great contributors to the comic book universe. Some very poignant moments are presented, especially in the 1950s when the comic book medium comes under scrutiny for presenting violent images. Outrage, according to the book, was so loudly expressed by individuals who alleged the comic book industry was corrupting America's youth that matters were taken before the Federal government and ultimately, Congressional hearings were being held so as to determine the link between comic books and juvenile delinquency. It is then stated that, as a result, the reputation of the comic book industry was maligned and left many editors, publishers, and illustrators without work.Following this crisis passage is a long-winded narrative of the Marvel Comics resurgence in popularity in 1961 that would spawn the creation of heroes such as The Fantastic Four, The Hulk, Spider-Man, as well as the return of old favorites, such as Ka-Zar, Captain America, and The Sub-Mariner. From then on are trivial profiles of the central Marvel characters and how each inspired the creation of TV shows, movies, toys, as well as the creation of superhero groups.All in all, this is a very good book to own.  Carlyn Berghoff McClure, CEO of the Berghoff Catering & Restaurant Group, is the fourth generation to continue the Berghoff legacy of serving great food and entertaining guests. I'm not a cook. However I enjoyed this book so much that I bought one for a dear friend, who is a great cook, that grew up in the Chicago area. She also had the wonderful experience of dining at the Berghoff in her youth.I really enjoyed reading the history of the Berghoff and viewing the pictures in the Berghoff Family Cookbook. It reminded me of the many good times and delicious food that I enjoyed at the Berghoff during 1959-1972, when I lived in the Chicago area. Of all the delicious meals that I had at the Berghoff, the one I enjoyed most was in 1961 when Chicago Black Hawks' Coach Rudy Pilous was dining at the table next to ours. A few days later his team won the Stanley Cup for the 1960-61 season. It was hard to read the news that The Berghoff was shutting its doors in 2006. Whenever I would attend a meeting in Chicago, especially at the Palmer House, one stop was always right around the corner at The Berghoff on Adams. A group of us would normally go over for at least one dinner or a lunch (and what an atmosphere for lunch; it was worth the price of admission just to be there and experience the crowding and so on).This book is more than a cookbook. It also provides a family history of the founder and the four generations of the Berghoff family who ran this family business over a 100 plus years.But it is also a fine cookbook, showcasing some of the best recipes from the Berghoff. As an appetizer, there is the grilled Portobello mushrooms marinated in balsamic vinaigrette. The marinade is pretty straightforward. Let the mushrooms sit in the marinade for a couple hours; then grill the mushrooms.Lunch, as noted, was an adventure at Berghoff. Once, I couldn't quite make up my mind and was rewarded with the servers telling me to hurry up and make my choice as I was in line! One of the lunches that I recall having was the Berghoff roasted turkey breast sandwich. Instructions for making it are pretty clear, and I look forward to reprising one of these fine lunches in the near future in my own kitchen.And one of my favorite dinners was Sauerbraten. Another dish with its own marinade to provide the rich flavor. Again, the recipe is clearly presented and the step by step approach makes this quite doable.Finally, a side dish--red cabbage. Again, I always enjoyed this. One nice thing about the recipe here--options are available, whether going with onion or apple or bacon.This is a neat reminder of the old restaurant and what made it fun to visit. The recipes are a legacy that will keep the memory of The Berghoff going. A nice book to pick up!

Berghoffs was the restaurant where I would go on my occasional visits to Chicago. The place was hurried, somewhat minimalistic, food was the unhealthy stomach filling European staple, which I crave so much. The business picked up tremendously when the closing was announced. It was funny to see the line of people waiting in line the last weekend before closing, going all the way around the corner of the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe building. I wonder if he ever went to Berghoffs. I did not go, just took a photograph. I do not like the idea standing in a food line, nostalgia or not.All the same, I was sorry to see this go and when the cookbook was announced, I preordered it right away. The creamed spinach recipe was probably the only one I ever tried to reproduce, because I liked it in the restaurant. And it was good to read the sauerbraten recipe. So this is how they made it. I always ordered it and never quite cared for their version. Cream sauce, rather than red wine, is much better, in my opinion.So it is almost seven years since the place closed and then somehow reopened as 17 West. It is still interesting to look at the recipes, but my taste buds found other cravings.

Beautiful brand new book! This beautiful book is a trip down memory lane. My family has lived in Chicago since before the fire, so many generations of us have beautiful memories of Berghoff. We were devastated to learn it was closing. LOVED the biography and the recipes are priceless. As soon as the book arrived and I did a quick review, I immediately ordered one for my sister. I know she will enjoy it as much as I do. Can't wait to start experimenting with some of the recipes.

Not only does this have many of our favorite recipes from this Chicago landmark, it also includes a wonderful history of the family and the restaurant. A must-have for any Chicago food fan!

The Berghoff was the restaurant of choice for generations of my family in Chicago. It was the place my father always took me when we went shopping downtown. This cook book is not only filled with menus and recipes, it contains lots of Chicago history and memories. If you are a Chicago native, it's a must have for your collection. I sat and read this cookbook and marked several recipes to try. If you know someone who cooks or who is looking to add interest to their meals, get them this book.

Knowing someone from the Berghoff family and hearing a bit of their history, I wanted to see what this cookbook had to offer. It is a lovely cookbook full of great recipes and well worth ordering. It arrived in perfect condition in a timely manner.
