This was an excellent work for so many reasons: great descriptions that 'put you there'; nice weaving of history & customs to put it all in context; very touching stories of encounters with people along the way, that really put a human face on the experience; and an overall self-effacing tone that draw you into the author's own motives for undertaking this journey. It really was this last piece that drew me into the story, and I gladly allowed myself to become immersed in it. I've read about the Camino but have never done it - now I feel like I understand it as well as anyone can without actually walking it. I don't know, I just got a wonderfully calm and serene feeling at the end of the book and was sorry to have to put it down. Thanks to the author for sharing such personal insights in a highly readable way.
William Ross Newland's latest effort, 'Tales of the Camino' is a delightful account of Mr. Newland's recent journey of discovery, insight and perhaps salvation across Spain. The backpacking trip, recounted in a manner reminiscent of Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales', relies on a series of inspiring and often amusing vignettes that revive the spirit, restore our faith in mankind and rekindle our spiritual longing. Mr. Newland is an accomplish Spanish speaker and skilled linguist, and this adds to the book's unique insights. 'Tales of the Camino' is yet another worthy addition to Mr. Newland's growing collection of accomplished literary work.
Ross Newland has written a charming little book, one that everyone ought to stick in their hip pocket when embarking on a hike of some length that entails some introspection. I did enjoy it very much, and it helped me to better understand a parent I knew from Haverford College who trained for and then walked the whole Camino, mostly by herself. One thing I particularly liked about the book was how Ross would share an encounter with someone along the Camino, but then leave it up to me as the reader to sort of make sense of the encounter and that person. One thing I was expecting but did not see in the book was a lot of introspection, which actually was fine with me and made the book a faster read.
