As a former 2 tour V/N era Navy F-4 driver, I felt like I was strapped back into my Martin Baker ejection seat! Having never had a squadron mate the likes of the character Trench, I struggled through the first 75 pages. Glad I hung in there. Captain Miller created a very spell binding, detailed, and very entertaining tale that embodied the very hearts and souls of the men with whom I flew. I especially enjoyed my vivid memories of carrier aviation and its own lingo. I can highly recommend this book to all, and especially to all who know what "DEAD BUG!" means and know the answer to "Is there a fighter pilot in the house?"
As a retired US Air Force troop I cannot comment on the Naval portions of the book except to say that the author knew his stuff in the air, loiter times, and the limitations of force projection. I found the action non-stop and the characters very well developed. He took on the very difficult subjects of camaraderie and how it can have limits when females are involved. There =was little that was predictable, or boring. If you don't know what prosecuting lethal force with today's weapons of ear is like this book can give an excellent "feel" for force projection, ROEs, and the fierce loyalties military people develop even when they don't realize it,A must read if you like Clancy and Dale Brown, and the other usual suspects of a good time read.
I really liked the first volume of this series, “Raven One.†It’s an exciting military thriller about an F18 squadron in an imaginary war with Iran. I anxiously plunged into the next installment, only to find out the book’s premise absurd. The US Navy is employing its aviation assets in a covert war on the Caribbean drug cartels. As you would imagine, descriptions of Super Hornets hosing down Cessna 152s would make for boring reading. Fortunately, Miller incorporates a plot twist, which allows the Navy to fight Venezuelan air/navy assets. That being said, once you get past the plot, the writing is again action packed and engrossing. The characters are involving. Miller realistically delves into cultural issues affecting our military, eg. women in combat roles. I am anxiously waiting for the next installment.
Really enjoyed this second instalment of the Raven series. More story, more characters, more action. My only gripe is it took a long time for the first cat launch but there was plenty of action to come. The complex strike package sequences are particularly interesting and give a great insight to the complexities of planning and executing a long range carrier borne strike with an integrated, multi role team. The flexibility and real time problem solving required of a modern fighter pilot is evident in many scenes especially the final sequence. Bring on the next one!
"Declared Hostile" is a fast-paced thriller that will be appreciated by fans of CAPT Miller's previous works as well as those new to his writing. As a fan of his work, I bought a copy and quickly absorbed the story within days of its release on-line. As a veteran of the US Navy who spent 4 years aboard a US nuclear aircraft carrier working in Primary Flight Control and the Air Department Office, I can attest to the accuracy of the details provided in this story. As the brother of a Naval Aviator who flew with CAPT Miller, I am always on edge to read the adventures spun from his lifetime experiences in the Navy, combined with his creative story-telling. "Declared Hostile" included twists and turns that you may question, but the overall story was certainly interesting and told with a high degree of military detail. Those of us who have been there and lived through it will automatically re-experience our history...non-veteran readers will be drawn into the story and learn a thing or two about adventures in Naval Aviation and life on the high seas.
Flip, now a squadron commander, has a lot to deal with on his next adventure. Not just the bad guys but, the politics and challenges of command in Naval Aviation. Naval Aviators are a competitive lot. Even among themselves. Maybe especially among themselves. He has to deal with some sever personality friction in his sqd and some old friends have some secrets that do not sit well with him. But all of that has to be compartmentalized when the shooting starts. Flip faces new challenges this time around but, because of the caliber of man that he is, he is well prepared for the intense danger he faces.
There is always something to learn about flying for a 96 year old WW II Navy pilot..Kevin Miller's Declared Hostile lets me share the flying experience once again in a new and exciting aircraft carrier environment.Entertaining and enjoyable it should also captivate readers who do not have wings.
Kevin Miller has given us another thrilling book centered on Naval Aviation. I had the privilege of flying F-18s in the 80's & early 90's, and Miller's descriptions of Carrier Operations brought back great memories and had my heart rate increasing! "Declared Hostile" is a sequel to "Raven One", but there is no problem reading it as a stand alone book (though I do recommend "Raven One" as well).Like other great military fiction writers, Miller creates a situation that could happen, weaves in great subplots, and produces a book that's hard to put down.Looking forward to the next book from Captain Miller!!
