I happened to see an item about "Driving Miss Norma" on Facebook and it sounded like something I would enjoy reading. AT first I was hesitant to buy the book since this was not a known author and often books like this often suffer hideously from lack of proper editing and proof-reading, but I was hooked from the get-go. As nearly an octogenarian (is that possible?) I found the premise fascinating. I was a bystander in the death of my widowed sister-in-law who wanted nothing more than to die from pancreatic cancer sitting in her beloved home and instead was coerced into spending her last days in a dark hospital room undergoing futile intervention. I loved the book! I rejoiced with Norma as she went on long-delayed adventures and cried with Tim and Ramie as they experienced both joy and painful memories and realizations. The book continues to conjure up many conversations within my own head about how I have spent my life thus far and how I would like to approach my final days. You got it right, Miss Norma. Congratulations! And thank you Tim and Ramie for helping her do it!
I followed Miss Norma on Facebook, and loved to see her photos and hear her adventures. This book expands on her story. Miss Norma shared the last year or so of her life with us. Having been diagnosed with cancer at 90, she chose to skip surgery, chemo, and radiation and traveled across the US in an RV with her son, daughter-in-law and their dog. Norma was a treasure. It is a gift to read her story and share her experiences. She did some amazing things in her year of travel, made some great family memories for all of us who loved hearing about her journey, and shared her joy and stories. End of life isn't always spoken about with family members. Norma's story may be a guideline to the topic. My book was delivered on Kindle, and I stayed up all night to read it. I then bought a hardcover copy for my Mother. She was also a WWII WAVE, and I thought she would enjoy the story.
This was the best book I purchased all year. Scratch that, this was the best 10 books I purchased all year. I bought one for myself and 9 extra to share with the hospice nurses I work with, instructing them to "pass it on" when done. Followed Miss Norma's journey on Facebook in "real time" last year and hoped beyond the odds that her journey would not end. Relived the journey through this very excellent book and LOVED it. It is engaging, honest, well written and interesting. The pictures keep things real and help tell the story. It was amazing to read how the people and towns embraced Miss Norma and her mission, and renewed (a little) my optimism and belief in the good in people. The writing style, alternating back and forth between Tim and Ramie, works well and their different perspectives and understanding of events is refreshing. Even though I promised myself I wouldn't, I flew through this book in 3 days and then was sad when it ended. It's a great book! Really gets you thinking about how we "do" death, old age, terminal illness, and life, in our culture, but don't get me wrong, this is not a sad depressing book. It's a book about life, adventures, family, living, and the nitty-gritty hard stuff. I wished this book could go on and on, more adventures, sequels. But I suppose the sequel is how we carry on and live our lives, now, having read the book and having "known" Miss Norma in whatever sense we each got to.
I followed Miss Norma's travels as soon as I saw the story on the CBS evening news. Having recently lost my dad to a long, drawn out illness I applaud them for their decision to take their beloved Miss Norma on a final adventure. The book is beautiful and I have bought one for myself and two for gifts. I gave one to my elderly mother who is in the early stages of dementia and she has passed it on to a friend. You have no idea the effect this story will have on the necessary discussion of end of life matters. God bless you Tim and Ramie (and Ringo) for the pleasure you bought to your precious mother in her last year
I followed Miss Norma on Facebook because of her joyous smile. I read the book because of her family's courage in joining her in that joy instead of bemoaning her impending death. Miss Norma taught us all that everyone dies; what is important is not when or how you die,but how you live. The book looked more openly at the problems involved in that final journey. It also looked at the assumption by most medical personnel that they wanted more time, no matter the cost in quality of life as well as money. Most, once they saw that the family had chosen the path of living well rather than longer, jumped in to help. The book was surprisingly well written for new authors, and Tim and Ramie's willingness to share their pain and joy will continue to lead many of us to evaluate our life choices. Thank you to all three of you, Miss Norma, Tim and Ramie.
