Good guide. It is concise and is a good size. Although, I would prefer it to be more like the "pocket" versions. He recommends Sorrento as a base, which is sound advice as Naples is a bit crazy. However, Santa Lucia and Chiaia are as calm as Sorrento and have the advantage of being close to the action in Naples and close to the the ferries that go to Capri, the Amalfi coast (via Capri), and Ischia.

These books are a must when traveling in Italy. Instead of buying the larger Italy book, we bought the books on Florence & Tuscany, Rome, Venice, and Naples & the Amalfi Coast because I only wanted to carry the cities I needed during our two-week Italy adventure.I highly recommend the paper copy over the electronic version. We accidentally left our Florence and Tuscany book on the plane so I downloaded the electronic version to my Kindle. It was much easier to use the maps in the book to orientate ourselves.Ricks' books are full of useful information, "traveling like a local" tips, and historical insights. We coupled the books with his free App and audio guides and got so much more out of our trip than if we had winged it and only used advice from the hotels and travel agencies.Our biggest regret was not getting the books before we booked our trip. We definitely would have saved money and visited more sights if we had read them before booking.

We ordered & received this book a few weeks prior to leaving for our trip to Italy where we spent a few days in Rome & a few days in Sorrento & the Amalfi Coast. I must say that it was nice to have this book to fill in the gaps of information we needed as well as a quick reference guide while in Italy. We also used it as our "tour guide" while in Pompeii rather than paying for a guided tour & it served us just fine with lots of info & we were able to walk around at our own pace rather than race to follow a group! I would recommend it for first timers!

My husband and I are big fans of Rick Steves', not just for his books, but for his TV shows as well. Rick has great insight into all the places he writes about and he makes it a personal journey for his readers.I bought this book along when we visited Southern Italy last month. We stayed in Sorrento and this book helped us plan our itinerary. The book was relatively light and small (4X8), so it was easy to carry in my bag. What I especially liked about this book was its detailed descriptions of Pompeii. It helped us understand the ruins as we passed each structure. The descriptions were easy to read and easy to follow since he included pictures. (Alternatively, you could rent an audio at the entrance for 5 euros -- and get a comprehensive guidebook as well -- but there's nothing like reading ahead to prepare yourself for the visit. The place is HUGE!)If you are visiting Naples/Pompeii/Sorrento/Capri/Amalfi/Positano/Ravello/Paestrum, I highly recommend this book!

This is the best guidebook I've read yet for my upcoming trip to Sorrento and the surrounding area. I enjoy Mr. Steves clear and concise descriptions of the sights and local businesses. When I return from the trip, I'll be able to say whether his info is accurate. BACK FROM MY TRAVELS: Okay, now I can say with confidence that Mr. Steves guidebook is excellent. We used it extensively and enjoyed his explanation of the various sites and found his recommendations to be "right on". I will be purchasing more of his guidebooks as we continue our travels.

Packed full of practical useful information. I should've read it before booking my trip to the Naples area but it's still been very useful. I'm taking it with me on my trip because it's small and easy to pack and carry, and filled with so many useful details that I'm sure will use it over and over again.

his author is definitely a must when you go to Europe, we learned a. great deal from his books.very detailed and relevant information.we used the app along with the books and Europe was a cake to navigate around and learn its history.

I used this for my recent trip to the Amalfi Coast. It is small, so it's easy to carry with you wherever you go, and it was so useful in deciding where to go when you are in Naples and the Amalfi Coast for only a limited amount of time. He also gives you a great mini-history of various sites, which was very informative. When we were going to the Blue Grotto on the island of Capri, for example, he told about how it was supposedly a nymphaeum in Roman times. This was something that no one else on the boat we had chartered knew and made the site even more interesting. I would recommend this any any other snapshot that Rick Steves has.
