It's never too early to introduce your young reader to Star Wars. This new edition in the Galactic Basic Edition from Disney/Lucas Film Press, is perfect for not only teaching them their ABC's, but about Star Wars in the process. Great, kid friendly illustrations, and rhyming make this a book one that kids of all ages will enjoy. Even Star Wars fans who are kids at heart, and already know their ABC's will enjoy this book From Ewoks to Stormtroopers, Kylo, to Princess Leia, learning the ABC's with 3PO will be an out of this world adventure! We loved this book, and recommend picking it up.

Boy was I excited when my 2 year old daughter declared how much she loved Star Wars. I immediately bought "Vader's Little Princess" but that book was complete crap. No story, no substance. It's not a book you can read to a toddler. It's a chuckle for Star Wars dads to throw on their shelf and collect dust.Not this gem. This teaches the ABCs, plenty of information about Star Wars so she can learn more about the franchise and is just overall adorable. Her favorite book and has to be read several times a day.

This book is so fun! Each letter has its own little poem and some are funny and very creative. I love reading this book to my little one and if they make any more in this series I'll definitely buy them!

Probably one of my favorite children’s books! Of course I am a Star Wars fan so that has something to do with it but the rhymes itself are clever and funny! I also like how long the book is because most children’s books are too short for story time in my opinion. My only thing I wish is that it was somewhat of a board book because I have a child that likes to turn the pages and she gets too excited and will rip them if not watching.

A fun, classic alphabet book that my Star-Wars loving kids truly enjoy. My 2 year old (now 3) used it to learn a lot of his letter as well as his Star Wars creatures and characters. It is very well done and I'm certain (along with the number one) will be a classic of this generation

My husband and I love this book (and the OBI-123) Note this book goes all the way through the Alphabet and is great for older children. Great book for them to practice enunciating hard to pronounce words for sure.The images are cute and playful, and even though our little guy is only 3months, we still read all sorts of books including this one!

Not the first ABC book to introduce your child to, it your intention is to teach them the alphabet, but very, very cute! Well written and beautifully depicted.

I've bought this book for 3 different families and they all love it. One issue, if you are a die-hard Star Wars fan you should know there are some spoilers in this book (Luke and Leia are siblings, etc.), in case you want your kids to learn about these things via the movies and not an ABC book.

As a former 2 tour V/N era Navy F-4 driver, I felt like I was strapped back into my Martin Baker ejection seat! Having never had a squadron mate the likes of the character Trench, I struggled through the first 75 pages. Glad I hung in there. Captain Miller created a very spell binding, detailed, and very entertaining tale that embodied the very hearts and souls of the men with whom I flew. I especially enjoyed my vivid memories of carrier aviation and its own lingo. I can highly recommend this book to all, and especially to all who know what "DEAD BUG!" means and know the answer to "Is there a fighter pilot in the house?"

As a retired US Air Force troop I cannot comment on the Naval portions of the book except to say that the author knew his stuff in the air, loiter times, and the limitations of force projection. I found the action non-stop and the characters very well developed. He took on the very difficult subjects of camaraderie and how it can have limits when females are involved. There =was little that was predictable, or boring. If you don't know what prosecuting lethal force with today's weapons of ear is like this book can give an excellent "feel" for force projection, ROEs, and the fierce loyalties military people develop even when they don't realize it,A must read if you like Clancy and Dale Brown, and the other usual suspects of a good time read.

I really liked the first volume of this series, “Raven One.” It’s an exciting military thriller about an F18 squadron in an imaginary war with Iran. I anxiously plunged into the next installment, only to find out the book’s premise absurd. The US Navy is employing its aviation assets in a covert war on the Caribbean drug cartels. As you would imagine, descriptions of Super Hornets hosing down Cessna 152s would make for boring reading. Fortunately, Miller incorporates a plot twist, which allows the Navy to fight Venezuelan air/navy assets. That being said, once you get past the plot, the writing is again action packed and engrossing. The characters are involving. Miller realistically delves into cultural issues affecting our military, eg. women in combat roles. I am anxiously waiting for the next installment.

Really enjoyed this second instalment of the Raven series. More story, more characters, more action. My only gripe is it took a long time for the first cat launch but there was plenty of action to come. The complex strike package sequences are particularly interesting and give a great insight to the complexities of planning and executing a long range carrier borne strike with an integrated, multi role team. The flexibility and real time problem solving required of a modern fighter pilot is evident in many scenes especially the final sequence. Bring on the next one!

"Declared Hostile" is a fast-paced thriller that will be appreciated by fans of CAPT Miller's previous works as well as those new to his writing. As a fan of his work, I bought a copy and quickly absorbed the story within days of its release on-line. As a veteran of the US Navy who spent 4 years aboard a US nuclear aircraft carrier working in Primary Flight Control and the Air Department Office, I can attest to the accuracy of the details provided in this story. As the brother of a Naval Aviator who flew with CAPT Miller, I am always on edge to read the adventures spun from his lifetime experiences in the Navy, combined with his creative story-telling. "Declared Hostile" included twists and turns that you may question, but the overall story was certainly interesting and told with a high degree of military detail. Those of us who have been there and lived through it will automatically re-experience our history...non-veteran readers will be drawn into the story and learn a thing or two about adventures in Naval Aviation and life on the high seas.

Flip, now a squadron commander, has a lot to deal with on his next adventure. Not just the bad guys but, the politics and challenges of command in Naval Aviation. Naval Aviators are a competitive lot. Even among themselves. Maybe especially among themselves. He has to deal with some sever personality friction in his sqd and some old friends have some secrets that do not sit well with him. But all of that has to be compartmentalized when the shooting starts. Flip faces new challenges this time around but, because of the caliber of man that he is, he is well prepared for the intense danger he faces.

There is always something to learn about flying for a 96 year old WW II Navy pilot..Kevin Miller's Declared Hostile lets me share the flying experience once again in a new and exciting aircraft carrier environment.Entertaining and enjoyable it should also captivate readers who do not have wings.

Kevin Miller has given us another thrilling book centered on Naval Aviation. I had the privilege of flying F-18s in the 80's & early 90's, and Miller's descriptions of Carrier Operations brought back great memories and had my heart rate increasing! "Declared Hostile" is a sequel to "Raven One", but there is no problem reading it as a stand alone book (though I do recommend "Raven One" as well).Like other great military fiction writers, Miller creates a situation that could happen, weaves in great subplots, and produces a book that's hard to put down.Looking forward to the next book from Captain Miller!!

By and large, Alter's work is a milestone in the art of translation and is in and of itself an instructive resource for students of the Bible in general, and students of Hebrew in particular. Typically, the practice of translation is viewed through the lens of a false dichotomy: either translations are mechanical, wooden, and "literal" or they are dynamic, thought-for-thought, or otherwise paraphrastic. Alter demonstrates cogently and forcefully that translation is not a game of viewing words as equations to be solved, nor is it the practice of grabbing what the author was trying to say and rendering it in an "abridged" kind of way (see his article in his "Five Books of Moses" entitled, "On the Heresy of Explanation").As a Hebraist I was immediately gripped by Alter's command of the Hebrew, and stunned by his grasp of the subtle distinctions between literary expressions in the Hebrew text. It goes without saying that what the author has done in this volume and the others of his series is to demonstrate that translation is as much of an art as it is a science; biblical literature often makes sudden and abrupt changes from prose to poetry, and not to mention careful and calculating choices in vocabulary and diction. Translation is just as much about translating art as it is about saying, "this word means this, and that word means that..." Unfortunately the artistry of the text is usually compromised in many English translations because of false assumptions about "literal" versus "dynamic" and paraphrastic translations of the text.In so many ways, Robert Alter is changing the way that scholars and layman alike are viewing the art of translation, especially among those that know Hebrew and Aramaic. If you have never picked up Alter's translations before, perhaps now would be a good time. His commentary alone is provocative enough, but his translation alone is worth the price of this volume.My ONLY complaint about this volume has to do with the absence of the section that is typically at the end of his works entitled, "For Further Reading." I contacted him about this and he insists that the bibliography would have been too cumbersome and not particularly helpful for readers. In his volume, "The David Story," there is a run-down of the characters in the narrative of 1 and 2 Samuel as well as a brief list of some of the resources that he consulted in the production of that translation that are absent in this one. While I wish that those appendices would have been included in the present volume, I understand his decision, and I am not deterred in recommending his work in the slightest.Hebrew Bible translation is moving into a new age in a BIG and GREAT way. Check out this volume and others of his translations to see some of where Bible translation is heading and you might just find some insightful surprises along the way; passages that were once obscure are now clear, passages that translators flattened into clarity by way of the heresy of explanation stand ambiguous as they were in the Hebrew. Altogether, this work is extremely readable, powerfully insightful, and a sober challenge to the excuses of translators past.Happy reading!

Does any other text have such a discrepancy between the amount of time generations have devoted to studying it and the actual understanding derived from this huge effort?? Century after century people have been told that these books were God's word, an instruction manual on how to live. Generation after generation, people have lived in houses with copies of the Bible. Family history, marriages, births and deaths were recorded in it. Dedicated missionaries spent lifetimes hard at work at their desks, just so they could translate the ancient Hebrew text into obscure languages. Just what the 19th century Hawaiians made of these brutal tales is beyond me. Did they actually read it? I have relatives who defend "Biblical marriage," -- did they actually read about all the concubines? Or was it just a sacred object? So I tried to read it, first as religious guidance, then as poetry and then as history. But I either couldn't follow it, or I just didn't believe it could be saying what I thought it was saying: all that murder, rape, genocide, pillage. As an archivist, I like to get as close to the original text as possible. Robert Alter seemed to be the most qualified guide, and I decided to make one last attempt.After reading the Five Books of Moses with Robert Alter's commentary, I was addicted and went on to read "Ancient Israel," translations and commentary on Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings. only with Alter's footnotes could I make sense out of the narratives. And when the actual text itself is garbled, he points out the likely reasons. For me this time, reading the OT became something of a soap opera with lots of dramatic irony as the reader sees looming disaster, "No! Don't do that!...Oh, no, they did..." There is lots of dual causality, disaster comes because the deity is mad about the worship of idols, and also because of more mundane factors like superior forces. Alter is upfront about the overall effect of the first half of "Ancient Israel" -- ruthlessness, and the general impression made by the second half -- tedium. And " nowhere in the Bible is there a more palpable discrepancy between the values and expectations of the ancient Near Eastern era in which the book was written and those of twenty-first century readers." The story of the defeat of the Canaanites is apparently mythical, not supported by archeological evidence. According to his theory, the genocide against the Canaanites as described with great approval in the Bible, probably never actually happened. The later battles with the Assyrians and Babylonians have more of a basis in fact. Alter's notes puts all of these discrepancies and correspondences between text and extra-biblical evidence in context. The Bible's fundamental if brutal honesty however comes out in the deep moral ambiguity of nearly all the great biblical heroes, so even King David, actually especially King David, they all did pretty dastardly things, that is essentially true to human nature.With Alter's framework, the folklore elements woven into the mythical and historical narratives stand out. Elijah is simply different from any of the other prophets before him. He works wishful-thinking miracles and helps the downtrodden. He miraculously provides food in times of hunger, an early model for the loaves and fishes (like the fairy tale "Tischlein Deck Dich"). Apparently these features made him the star of Jewish folklore over the centuries. Alter convincingly concludes that Elijah provides the template for many of the Jesus stories of the New Testament. The interconnections are starting to make sense to me. I'm grateful to Alter for using both his erudition and his deep insights to help non-specialists such as myself get a sense of what the OT is all about. I'm not about to give the Bible a rating, that's rather presumptuous, but Alter's notes definitely deserve 5 stars. Worth the time and effort to work through...I'm still not about to use the Bible as a guide to living, but as a guide to human nature, it's all in there.

Translation is acceptable, but not much more insightful than the JPS Tanach, which is good but missing the small verbal and grammatical clues you still have to get mostly get through much more extensive critical commentaries. This may just show the difficulty of truly transferring Hebrew into English.I was hoping there would be more emphasis on the value of the text as a solid, even well written narrative about ancient Israel. And more commentary about grammatical features and the word play found in the Hebrew. I was hoping some innovative formatting would also have been utilized to highlight the textual weave it contains, instead many pages are often filled with commentary that expresses historical opinions that have no literary or poetic content.It's such a shame with the graphics and text editing capabilities of modem software that Bible editions aren't much more artistic or innovative than those published a hundred years ago.I suggest getting the Everett Fox versions of the same texts puslished by Shocken. That seems to better capture the flow of the text and has less unhelpful historical criticism. It better formats the text to illustrate the narrative structures. Then get one of those Hebrew and English Tanachs from Koren, Artscroll or JPS that let you dig a little yourself in the Hebrew. I prefer the Koren Tanach myself. They have a Chumash with identical formatting to that. The Koren Hebrew font is elegant and easy to read and they nicely format some of poetic passages in the Hebrew as well. Their English conveys singular and plurals of the Hebrew into English in a unique fashion.

My wife purchased this book for me before our twins were born. As a first-time dad, I was both anxious and excited for our future. I perused some of the other books my wife had about what to expect, etc., and they were either too focused on simply keeping the child alive or full of cliches about how you would feel. Not to sound like a typical man, but so most of the books I read about babies and children made me want to gag.This collection of essays by Michael Lewis. however, was perfect. I've enjoyed reading Lewis's other writing on financial topics and this collection struck the perfect tone of confronting many of the fears and emotions parents face without going overboard or resorting to the tired cliches. Lewis manages to convey the range of emotions and feelings that a modern dad confronts with truly hysterical stories of his experiences in raising his children. He pulls no punches on the frustration a dad feels at times, yet doesn't bury the life-changing effect of having children in your life.Now that I've had over a year's experience being a father (no time at all, I know!), I re-read Lewis's book and was amazed at how perfectly he captured fatherhood. If you are a father-to-be, I couldn't recommend this book more if you are looking to ease into the water. This would also be the perfect present for your husband if he is the type that won't go for normal cheesy books about kids. Like Lewis's other excellent books, he has a gift for employing his sharp sense of humor and clear writing to convey a feeling and understanding to a subject that few writers are able to achieve. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all fathers and fathers-to-be.

Michael Lewis is the famous author of Liar's Poker and Money Ball. A very good writer. In this book Home Game he takes a departure from writing about Wall Street and Money to write up his experiences as a Dad.Worth a belly full of laughs. Unfortunately, if Moms read this - it will confirm your worst suspicions about Dads.The first incident is worth repeating. He is in a swimming pool on vacation at a resort. He is in the adults pool and his two young daughters in the kids pool. A boy comes by and tries to bully them. Lewis' younger daughter yells foul obscenities at the boy in a very loud voice and chases him away. The rest of the parents around the pool are simplify horrified at this language. In a flash of inspiration Lewis' realizes no one knows he is their father. So in his words, he 'drops quietly like an alligator below the water' and swims away, but secretly proud that his daughter stood up for herself, but VERY relieved his wife was not around.

Not even for dads, as a new mom I loved reading Michael Lewis's style of writing. Def a light hearted book for any dads ( or moms) who are a fan of Michael Lewis' work and his funny and interesting look at raising children. :: Props to also lots of East Bay shout outs! ::

I was excited this was written by Michael Lewis. He has some great hits and I was hoping this would also be great. This is not great. It helps that I was able to get it cheap, thought I found out why. Worth skipping for other books.

Most (if not all) of the reviews here are from fathers and/or mothers. And they all recommend this book. I am not a father yet but soon to be. We are expecting our first child in mid-September. Ultrasound showed we will have a boy! :) I found this book very fun to read. So much fun I want more! Michael Lewis is really a great storyteller. I get drawn into his world as a dad while reading this book.The book is mainly broken into 3 parts. One for each of his kids. The stories are not step-by-step chronological accounts of his experiences but descriptions of his fatherhood moments. These "moments" are probably typical (I wouldn't know yet) in a family setting but the way he wrote them is just plain funny! More than half the time I find myself laughing out loud like I'm in a stand up comedy show.This book is not really a guide to fatherhood or even lessons for fathers and fathers-to-be. He's not lecturing, not even giving pointers. This is an account of his experiences as a father; but as we all know we learn from experiences, some from our own some from others. As I said earlier, I am a first time expectant father and by no means I can say this book got me prepared for what is to come. But I do know this, now I have a little better idea of what it's going to be like.By the way, I bought this book through Kindle and read it between my iPhone and the iPad. The texts were rendered cleanly and Whispersync was flawless. There were no pics or diagrams in this Kindle version of the book.**Spoiler Alert: He talked about vasectomy in the book. I really did not like that (as you can probably understand with my situation). It was a pretty detailed account that I honestly skimmed and skipped over. Sorry, it's not for me right now and maybe ever.

This book was pure pleasure from beginning to end. I could not put it down and loved especially Lewis's ability to seem both an affectionate and at-times conflicted father.One of my favorite chapters was the one that recounts his visit with his oldest daughter to an amusement park for toddlers in the middle of Oakland: Fairyland, I think it's called. I was laughing late into the night.There's also a very detailed and viscerally affecting section on Lewis's vasectomy.I loved this book - such fun and so smart too.

Had this book for my RC class. Very useful, Jack really shows well thought out steps for example problems. I'm a very visual person and so the way the problems were laid out and solved really helped me pass the class. And he goes straight to the point when it comes to the conceptual stuff.

Okay book. Loaded with examples which is great and the author sometimes talks about real life practice for design. There are typos in this edition though so be careful. Consult the website on the publishers site for errata. I would prefer the book by macgregor and wight. Except it does not have many examples. It is a good reference book and talks much more about the theory which is vital.

Author Jack Mccormac has written books on concrete, steel, and structural analysis. His best book is this one on reinforced concrete. It is a basic introductiuon for a first course in concrete design. It is loaded with clear examples, illustrations, and text that explains where he is going. You can't ask for a better book to teach yourself reinforced concrete design. Its a great review book for the PE exam. I highly recommend this book. The format should be copied by others for masonry, timber and steel design books - not too cumbersome but complete.

Design of Reinforced Concrete (Eighth Edition) by Jack C. McCormac and Russell H. Brown is an excellent book. I am a registered mechanical engineer and am trying to expand my understanding of reinforced concrete. What I really like about this book is how the authors use basic principles of mechanics of solids in the design of reinforced concrete. Rather than just trying to apply a set of derived equations tables and charts that I am not familiar with, I can use my understanding of basic mechanics of solids to figure out such things as the compressive stress and strain in the concrete, the stress and strain in the tensile steel reinforcement, the stress and strain in the compressive steel reinforcement,etc. while applying the current ACI 318-08 Code.

This is an okay book. It has a lot of examples which I like but as far as actually learning concrete behavior (really important) I would recommend the book by wight and macgregor.

Good book

...but it wasn't the book's fault. Personally, this course was the most difficult undergraduate course I took to get my Civil Engineering degree. I don't know if that was due to the professor, myself, the material, or a combination of all three. However, the book provides plenty of real world examples. I have not used it yet in the 'real world' to test its validity but that is because I work on the construction end rather than the design end.If this is required for your course, get it.If you need it to practice for the EIT or PE exams, I would recommend it.If you want this for a reference book, I think it would be a good addition.If you do not have any interest in designing reinforced concrete structures, don't get it.If you are an architect without an engineering background, this is not a good place to start. Here is the order I would recommend. Structural Analysis Geotech + Foundations Concrete + Steel
